Slippy also gets pretty great characterization in Assault. From his more cowardly persona coming out in some mission briefings, to his analytical nature when they have to figure out the nature of the aparoids, to "Give it a rest Falco. Seriously, shut your beak for once."

22:13 Actually, Fox's father wasn't named James at this point, but he did get mentioned in SFSNES. If you manage to access the level known as The Awesome Black Hole, which is more of a warp to a different path than the one you're on, General Pepper tells Fox that the Awesome Black Hole is where Mr. McCloud disappeared at and to be careful. Minor thing, but there's another fact about the Arwings... In 64 and Zero, official media outside of those games like the Nintendo Players Guide(Which has canon info) actually says that the Arwings don't actually belong to Team Star Fox. The Great Fox does, because James McCloud took out an 80 year mortgage on it, but the Arwings are on a field testing loan/license from Space Dynamics, the company that designed the Arwings and other craft used by both Cornerian and Venomian forces. There's also the fact that Star Fox are still full on mercenaries, but they're more like Cornerian PMCs with the fact they're loyal to Corneria and will fight for them if paid for their efforts, but as Fox says during the credits, the team like doing things their own way, hence why they turn down the offer to officially join the Cornerian Army. Fun fact for Star Fox 64, SF64 3D and possibly Zero, General Pepper will react differently to the bill for services rendered depending on how many Venom units you shoot down by game's end. Below a certain threshold, the General stays silent, between a certain set of numbers he'll say "This is a steep bill... But it's worth it!" And if you exceed a certain amount he'll go "Whaaaaaaat?!..." Like he can't believe the price being asked to pay. I think he's silent at like, and I'm using SF64 as a guide, so remember that the amount asked for was a lot in 1997. Anyways, he's silent at below $10,000. Between that and $100,000 he says it's a steep yet worth it bill. Above that he's left speechless with that extended "what?" in there. For the 3DS remake and Zero, they increased the amount to account for inflation. So now it's less than $100,000 he's silent. Between $100,000 and $1,000,000 he goes "This is a steep bill... but it's worth it!" Greater than $1,000,000 and he goes "Whaaaaaaat?!..." (Also, sorry for the wall of text, I'm rather well versed in the lore of Star Fox due to how much I love it. ^^;;; ) 25:01 You're talking about Sector Y, that's the stage's name. (If you want a real deep cut inspiration for Star Fox that also involves Mecha, find the anime Armored Trooper Votoms, there's a ton of things from that anime that clearly had an influence on Star Fox. The planet Quaint, yes, that's the name of a planet in the anime, was pretty much a direct inspiration for Planet Venom, more obvious in Zero, but you could see this in the older games from SFSNES onward.) Also, thank you for giving The Battle Begins a recommendation, it's a fantastic animation that my father enjoyed when I showed it to him. I really do wish they had made an entire 50+ episode anime that was entirely Star Fox. We've had anime based on Nintendo properties before, some better than others. But that one, oh man a Star Fox anime would have been so special... If only...

Oh wow, I appreciate all the info! I’ll relay this comment to Jonathan since I’m sure he’d like to know about all this as well. Really interesting that Fox’s dad was mentioned in the original SF even if it is just briefly. And yeah, The Battle Begins is incredibly awesome! I, too, wish it had received more than just a 15 minute short. A series would’ve been great though I’d have even loved just a full movie. Thanks for watching and for the info dump!

@@RewindArcade abso friggin lutely. Like a Henson Production with the production value of The Dark Crystal series. But intentionally retro. Recreating the style of the original Star Fox puppets. Kind of like Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet. But mixed with modern CGI, like the Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet remakes. Watched the whole documentary again. Loved it, so interesting, and also made me think a lot about some decisions Nintendo took there, which were more crucial for their future than we could actually be aware of back then. I'm thinking this craze and huge money to develop and program for the superfx could have something to do with the eventual decision of not having a SuperNes CD, maybe for Nintendo's eternal fear of piracy back then... So interesting nonetheless, congratulations to both of you for this great piece!

Awesome, thanks a ton for watching again man! They really did make some pretty crazy decisions which caused big shifts in the gaming industry back then. I’m sure there were multiple reasons discussed behind closed doors that led to the Super FX deal, but Nintendo’s so tight lipped about everything that I doubt we’ll ever know for sure.

As Star Fox was one of the franchises that got me into gaming as a kid, it's truly wild to see the full development behind the franchise's twists and turns. Thanks a ton! BTW, have any of your heard of the Star Fox manga called, "Farewell, Beloved Falco" before? It acts the supplementary material to explain why Falco left Star Fox in the first place. I won't spoil it here, but it's pretty fascinating to see it play out. There's a full dub you can watch of it on KZfaq if you are curious.

I bet you guys are the right ones to either confirm or deny a couple StarFox rumors I've heard: I read a while back that StarFox Assault was originally supposed to be a multiplayer-only "Battle Royale" game, but when an early build was shown off at a trade show, it was received so poorly that they scrapped that idea and spent another year or two of development rebuilding it into the game we eventually received. I'm assuming this means that all the on-rails sections and the entire Aparoid storyline were added in this later development stage. I'm not sure whether this is true or not, but it does make sense given the arena-like structure and "last-man-standing" objective of most of the stages. Did either of you happen to come across any information about this during your research? Assuming it's true, I'm curious how much of the final build of Assault was added as a reaction to the negative reception. Also, I was watching a run on AGDQ recently and the people on the panel were very matter-of-factly stating that Kid Icarus Uprising started its development as a StarFox game. I'd never heard this before but it sounds plausible. Any chance you guys have any insight on this one?

Something else we never got around to discussing was the rumored Star Fox racing game from Retro. Definitely was one of the most prominent rumors circulating for a while which I believe was eventually proven fake.
@lifebeginsat8bit
@lifebeginsat8bit Жыл бұрын
I didn't come across anything to suggest that Star Fox Assault was originally intended to be a mlutiplayer-only battle royale, but I did hear rumblings of frustration from folks in attendance at one of the various trade shows where the game was highlighted. Apparently some of the early builds of the game featured first-person shooting rather than the third-person, behind the back style present in the final game. I couldn't officially confirm that this was changed due to the feedback, but it sounds at least somewhat plausible. You can find images from these early builds that look a little more like Halo than a Star Fox game. As far as the Kid Icarus rumor, I have not heard that. What I can say is that Nintendo is infamously reluctant to divulge development history. Take for example the fact we mention in part 2 that the demo that would become Star Fox Zero was originally built using assets from a scrapped Star Fox game on the Wii. That's ALL I could find about that Wii project. And we only know that because Miyamoto mentioned it casually in an interview. Kid Icarus Uprising feels a lot like Star fox Assault though, with a mix of on-rails sections, levels where you run around with various weapons, and an emphasis on multiplayer. I'd say it at least somewhat plausible, but it'll be difficult to know for sure until someone like Sakurai does an interview and confirms it.

@@RewindArcade Yeah, it was definitely proven fake, and the person who made the "leak" shortly admitted it was fake after showing it. Of course, the internet didn't see this detail and went on speculating. One Arlo doesn't even know the hoaxer fessed up and thinks someone saw a preview of the racing minigame added to Starlink's Crimson Moon update, saw the Arwing there, and went "Oh, a Star Fox racing game." Obviously not paying attention to the fact the rumor said Retro was behind it, not Ubisoft. That Arlo fella, he can be quite the character...

Hey ChrisB Crisps. Great video as always. Could you (or Shmup Junkie or one of the great KZfaqrs) please do a video on the different sub-genres of shmups. I always hear this jargon used about the genre (and I’m not entirely sure what words are being said) but I think ive heard them say “this is a great Cave” or “this is a good Caravan”, etc. I love the genre, but I can’t find anywhere that explains the different words being used. Maybe this isn’t your thing, but I know you are friends with that community. I’ve enjoyed the genre since the early 90’s, but I have no idea what these guys are talking about in the videos. I also don’t know what makes a good shmup. Sometimes I will watch reviews where 2 games look almost identical, but one of will get an “S Tier” for being innovative and great and not the other one gets a “C Tier” for being an average title with nothing special going on. I think it’s a little intimidating for people interested in getting into the genre. This may not be of any interest for you and you can completely disregard this comment if so. But I love your style of videos and I figured I’d at least ask. Either way, keep up the great work. I always look forward to seeing a new upload from you. Take it easy my friend

Thanks Eric, always great seeing you in the comments my friend! To answer your suggestion, I'd say that SJ would more be the man for the job on a video like that. I l love playing shmups, but I'm definitely way more into the classic style games like Gradius and R-Type. I've honestly never even played a Cave shooter and really don't care much for bullet hell games. So if anything I'm in the same boat as you with all this and would love to watch a video explaining it all myself, haha. Maybe someday! Thanks as always for watching man!

I was always so bummed about Hajime Hirasawa leaving VGM composing after the Star Fox [SNES] debacle. He thought he owned the rights to the music he composed and was making a full orchestral version and the big N said "no, you don't own your work." Left such a bad taste in his mouth he left the industry :/. At least he created one of the most memorable soundtracks ever. Nice to know though he created the Faith-Inc company and it has been going on 30 years strong so at least he remained successful, but boy howdy would I have loved to hear more music from him.

I could not agree more!! The Star Fox soundtracks following the original weren’t terrible or anything, but none of them even came close to matching the masterpiece that the first game was. a Zero remake for Switch seems way more unlikely to me than a new StarFox (not that I think a new StarFox is particularly likely). it dosn't really matter if the game is decent or even good if the controls were fixed. Zero has a stigma attached to it, it'd be foolish to try to rerelease a game that already has terrible reception and scant few advocates. if I was Nintendo I'd probably want to just sweep the game almost entirely under the rug like they did with Other M. although that kinda leaves them in a bind as to what to do if they do want to release a new StarFox, you probably can't continue from Zero because it's a game almost no one played and of them almost no one liked, it'd be kinda hard to continue off of Command since that game is 17 years old and had no canon ending, rebooting the series a third time might make you look like you're bot confident in the series and fans probably wouldn't like that, continuing off of StarFox 2 seems like the most reasonable option since it's kinda the most recent release and even that's a neigh three decade old SNES game most well known for having been cancelled for 23 years.
@RewindArcade
@RewindArcade Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree with all of what you said. The series is really in a strange place where I’m not sure Nintendo knows what to do with it at this point. Honestly, I feel like it’s sort of been in limbo for almost 20 years now. I’m not holding my breath for anything new, but I feel like at this point I’d rather see them bring in a 3rd party indie developer like the studio that made Ex Zodiac to try and resuscitate the franchise.
