My great uncle, Vernon "Booger" Ray was on the Johnny Carson show on March 27, 1987. As you can see, he was a card.

I remember Vernon Booger Ray on the Carson show. I really liked him and often thought about how he lived, in a free country. It is such a low down dirty shame that our country is not that way anymore. The spirit of Booger is still strong but this country needs to catch back up. I can just see him right now, riding in that old wagon waving people to go on by while keeping two faithful mules under control with a pair of relief mules tied to the back and singing to himself. He brought a lot of smiles to a lot of good people. God bless ol' Booger, wherever he may be !

Johnny would regularly have a guest from a small town or the country to tell their story. He treated them the same as he treated the biggest Hollywood stars. Its what made the show so great. Thanks for posting this. It brought back great memories!

In the spring and summer of 1988 I would go camp with Booger Ray’s crew! I’d cook over the campfire and Booger let me drive a team of mules up to the convenience store! I loved it!

I saw Booger Ray many times as he rode in his horse drawn wagon, and once I asked him if I could take his picture - his answer was "Yes, but I can't dance". I told him I didn't want him to dance, just pose for a picture, and he did. It was a treasure.

Wow in all my years growing up with the Johnny Carson Show he was so respectfully but he is so nervous on how to handle this Ole timer I truly think that this is what made him great at what he did. He could fake it very well when not sure how to question a person. Great man RIP Mr Carson We miss you

Booger was a fixture in the 60's and early 70's along US 70, generally between Idabel and Durant although I have seen him up toward Heavner. Toward the end of his life he hooked up with a former Sheriff and conducted trail rides for groups from Wright City to Cloudy, drew a lot of folks out of Dallas and Oklahoma City. He was a well known and well remembered character.

vern wallen I got hooked on David Letterman way before he really caught on. I was working swing shift in an Oregon sawmill around 1979 or 80 and couldn’t get to sleep right away after work, so I would turn on the tv and have a shot of orange juice and Canadian Club to unwind at around 1:00 a.m. Sometimes his humor reversed the effects of the nightcap and then it was harder to get to sleep. All in all, Johnny was truly a very funny man and an American treasure that I never really grew to appreciate back then. Up until then I didn’t stay up late enough to watch late night tv as a logger and millworker kept early morning hours. Johnny and Dave had a similar sense of humor that I can relate to.

Forrr suurrre!! Amen to that! I just survived the Paradise fire and I love nostalgia. I lost everything including all of my old records and old record player, but the 1976 ford step side pickup barely made it more work to do on it and it will be on the road! Nostalgia should live on! 😃

Have met booger a few times. My family is from Smithville Oklahoma and we would go back every year for vacation. He was a very nice man he even let me drive his mules once. I was aboit 8 years old..

Grew up in KIngman Az, our house was very close to 93, in the 60s, saw him rattle down the hwy once a year, mules and all. No one ever bothered him runnin right down 93, probably coming from old 66.... Never met him but this really brings back old times....

Johnny was from Iowa and Nebraska, and could relate to average people. After Johnny left the scene in 1992, I couldn't bear watching Letterman trying to make a joke of these type people--everything was a joke. Johnny, like you said, talked to them like real people. I really miss Johnny because of exactly this fact. Whether it was a 105-yr.old lady, a woman who collected odd-shaped potato chips, or a farmer, gold prospector, etc....Johnny always didn't make them the butt of jokes like Letterman. Leno was a fair transition, but looking at it now, it's about only the Hollywood elites, pop icons,, very unfunny comedians, etc. I miss Johnny terribly.

BigBingFan, you're so right. Johnny was great! He would allow himself to be the butt of the joke. He was kind and gracious to regular folks like Booger Ray. Today's late night talk show "comedians" are terrible. I hate them. Letterman and Stephen Colbert would have treated Booger Ray like dirt.

It's crazy to see Booger Ray on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I remember riding on the wagon with Booger Ray when I was a kid in Hugo, OK. He was always full of knowledge and I enjoy the times I got to spend with him growing up in Southern Oklahoma.

Oh my, your comment jarred my memory. Back in the 70's I used to spend summers at my grandmothers house in Howe. I remember him too but I wasn't putting 2 and 2 together. I saw him several times. I recall he used to roll string. lol He had a stick with a big ball of string on it & he would walk around telling stories & rolling that string from one stick to another.

In ‘65 when I got drafted into the Army they sent me down south for basic and being a Philly native I got to meet guys who lived in the mountains etc., and they were all characters! God Bless America.

When I was drafted in 1966, our basic training company was half composed of guys from the north (PA, NJ and NY) and half by guys from the south (NC, SC and Tennessee). You’re right, those Southern guys were hilarious. I’m pretty sure they thought the same about us. Anyway, after eight weeks of basic, we got along just fine!

One of our local characters was Harry Garrison. He was on the "Tonight Show" as an expert at blowing smoke rings...It took forever to get a smoke ring, because of the ventilation system, but Harry's reactions were great. Finally they shut down the ventilation and he was able to blow a smoke ring. His profession was restoring player pianos and selling them, and his hobby was magic. Everywhere I worked, someone either knew Harry, dated him once, or used to work for him.

KARK TV IN LITTLE ROCK. I was attending the end of my first year of college at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ar. I may have seen this. I now live in Fayetteville, Ar. Cool ! This great! My grandad was born in 1912. I miss that generation of people. I knew a man that was 104 in my hometown of Mulberry, Ar . When I was 5 in 1973, he walked everywhere, chewed a plug of tobacco and had a small bottle of whiskey. He wore overalls and a straw hat. He was born in 1869, not long after the Civil War. Its amazing to think how close we are to history with some of the oldest folks. Find out everything you can from them young ppl! At 50, I try to relate thingscto mygrown kids about how things were that I learned from my grandparents. My grammy is 93 now and I ask her to relate stories and we have it on video. Thanks for posting. The SE Ok mountains are still a very rugged country. Bigfoot central! Lol !

I think 🤔 there is,my family gave my grandma 👵 a Johnny Carson magazine,his whole set of DVD 📀 shows and I believe a thick book,I’ll let you know if there’s one book to what you’re looking for !!! My grandma loved Johnny Carson a lot,she grew up watching him with my grandpa 👴,my grandma passed away with Cancer,it’s been about 2 years and I miss her so,so much!!!!

Possibly the best thing about Carson was that he knew when a bit was gone to shit and wouldnt hesitate to admit it. A lot of hosts and comedy people continue the bit and try to salvage it, Carson was different.

Watching Johnny Carson on Channel 4 is a real switch for me, being born in Jonesboro, we watched that channel a lot when I was a kid. I'm not gonna bore you with all the particulars, just to say thanks for sharing these videos with us. It's worth a thumbs up and a sub, and a click on the bell too, thanks again.

This is excellent example of the Tonight show I prefer . Today's Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon seems to be straight laughs and music and games . Johnny Carson's had much more of a human element to his interviews.

It was just good...I watched with my parents and it was clean decent fun. I definitely do not agree with left wing SJW’s and I don’t want to hear any political crap...even if I agree with it. Do what you are paid to do, ENTERTAIN!

Jeremy Rush I agree - and Johnny Carson absolutely did political jokes " and in America we are allowed to make fun of the people we put into power" the best compliment Carson received was that you could not tell what his own politics were because he was equal opportunity rib jabber against both party's. I personally am most disappointed in Conan was a great fan of the NBC New York Conan BUT ever since his show went out to Hollywood " he has soled out" to Hollywoods liberal agenda and his show has diminished because of it " have not watched any of them in years" Craig Ferguson was my last because I enjoyed his mindless humor with his sidekicks Geoff the Robot and Secretariat the Horse.

During the 60s, my best friend and I had husbands who worked shifts together. When they worked evening and night shifts, we were on the phone when kids were in bed, and we'd laugh like fools for 90 minutes.

Carson is STILL one of the few entertainers I can binge watch. I really can't think of any other for that matter. Here's my reqmts for comedians that I'll watch more than once. They have to be good. But they have to be decent. No foul mouth words every other word. I need to get the feeling from them that they truly appreciate their audience. That's about all I can think of right now. Back to binge watching Johnny Carson. Just like Booger Ray, who is honest & sincere... You can listen to him and in under a min, you know he's a entertainer ya wanna listen to. We need more Booger Ray's and Johnny Carson's. But they were one of a kind. Thank ya kindly.

Man I would have loved to have met him. My love and I just split up, and I'm moving into an RV. When I head up to see my Brother, i'm going to stop by his gravesite and say hi.
