Watch our overview video on 1 Timothy, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In 1 Timothy, Paul shows Timothy how to restore order and purpose to the church in Ephesus which has been disrupted by false teachers.

@chetsenior7253 'slave' in the Bible is synonymous with servant and worker. it did not have the connotations it entails today. in fact there were many progressive Christian laws protecting the rights of servants/slaves including if a master abused a slave whatsoever that slave was free to go and was immediately promised new employment opportunities while the master was faced with charges. which is a revolutionary concept when comparing it to pre-civil war slavery where servants and masters did not even share the privilege of human rights

Why in earth people say women should be quiet and submissive in different way. Women can not teach and exercise any spiritual thing? I believe this does not apply to anyone. @@chrissonofpear1384 God is not only able to keep His Word, He HAS kept His Word. If you make excuses for why it is not relevant to you, you will be the loser in the end. Why not simply ask God to help you understand what He did and how He did it? Ask Him to make it real to your heart. If He is not able to do so, what is it that you believe? God is not what we make Him out to be, nor does He fit into a neat doctrinal box, He is REAL, and He is able to transform your life if you will trust Him. Your question is like protesting any subject, as though you were in a classroom making excuses about why science or math is irrelevant and so we shouldn't have to study it. That would in no way change the curriculum or lessen your need to pass the class in order to graduate! Your protestations reveal that you have no idea about what you believe because the entire New Testament message of salvation is drawn from the Old Testament Scriptures. After His resurrection, the Lord met with His disciples "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures…", (Luke 24:44-45). We need God's help to understand. Ask Him!

As a theology student graduate, I love what you're doing. May I suggest though that you be careful when you say things like "if Christians become associated with slave rebellions they are compromised" because if the Christian man MLK Jr. didn't rebel against slavery and inequality we would not be living in a free America. Slavery still exists today with human trafficking and I believe Christians should in fact be associated with a rebellion against this evil where women, children, and men are sold for sex and abuse. I think there's just a little more nuance here that what you said above where I quoted you might not allow room for. I just wanted to point that out, but please keep doing what you're doing because these videos are a help to me and my ministry!

Razvan Stoian I agree with you in that the people should be careful in how they word this interpretation. However, there are some things you need to remember too. 1. MLK did not rebel against slavery itself because it had been outlawed for nearly 100 years. a better example would be Nat Turner, although many were horrified by his actions too, as video said may happen. Also, MLK used peaceful and Christian values to achieve his goals and condemned militant actions like those of Malcolm X. Civil Disobedience is different than a full rebellion which usually involves much bloodshed. 2. Our country is based on different values and thoughts than those of the Romans with a heavy Christian influence on the leaders and people of the land, unlike the Romans who were pegan. Early Christians were still against Roman values of slavery and their world view, but they had to be more tactful in order to change it. 3. Christians must be tolerant of dominating belief systems. Tolerant does not mean to accept. by no means should we simply allow sex trafficking to continue. Tolerant means to be patient. Tolerant means to accept that people have a different view and that it takes time to convince them that Christ is the only way. Paul's ministries were not 1 hour sermons to random Greeks and Romans. He would debate them and argue with them for days, weeks and stay in one place for even years ministering to whoever would listen and engage him. Resistance is important. The day the Bible becomes outlawed is the day I become a criminal. I think the video could have handle that a bit better but your argument against it had some flaws.

I'd really want them to re-introspect and evauluate that statement simply because I still feel like it what lead to white supremacy using the bible against us Africans as slave and I myself being a african christian I just find it very offensive I'm really disturbing. I'm starting to question alot pertaining christainity to Africans.

@@josie5165 Why would it rub you the wrong way though? If in heaven it turns out that it was in fact meant that until Jesus returns and we are all immortal, women were not meant to be teachers or leaders of men in the church. Would you be mad at God or think of Him differently
@josie5165
@josie5165 3 жыл бұрын
@@jbcfamily4802 well it would rub me the wrong way because all throughout the Bible God lifts up women, if He didn’t want us to lead it would quite literally contradict the scriptures. For one in Genesis men ruling over women was part of the curse as in what God didn’t want for them. Two women lead in the old and New Testament. Having a women be judge and led an army, (Deborah), Esther was put in a position of power to save her people, one was a prophetess (Abigail), Miriam led others in Moses’s time, and one woman even build a city (Sheerah). In the New Testament He lets women be the first evangelists to witness Jesus’s empty tomb, There’s Phoebe the deacon who is mentioned to play a crucial role in church and so much more. God is a God of reason and order, I don’t believe he’d decide that both genders who represent who God is when put together would favor one gender over the other. Just because one has a different types of chromosomes doesn’t and shouldn’t affect their ability to reason, lead, and teach. Back then most women couldn’t even read, they weren’t allowed, so of course them teaching from scripture they couldn’t read would be an awful idea. Not to mention most women weren’t allowed to go to school and learn about the Torah so they could be easily swayed by false teachings. But things have changed as women can be educated in such things and help others. Jesus Himself planted seeds for us to grow as people and not to discriminate based on gender. Many women have the gift of leading and to deny them that would rob the church of a very valuable asset.
@jbcfamily4802
@jbcfamily4802 3 жыл бұрын
@@josie5165 All good points. I have 2 replys. You said "favor" one gender. There is no favor to be a teacher and not. (That interpretation of favor would hinge on if the women desired to be a teacher). Its following the reasoning from Paul. That leads me to reply 2. What do you make of the reasoning Paul gives for not allowing women to teach men or have portions of authority over in the church. He says because Adam was creates first them Eve. And Eve sinned first not Adam?
@josie5165
@josie5165 3 жыл бұрын
@@jbcfamily4802 Again I think Paul’s reasoning was that women weren’t very educated and never learned about the Torah so, again it would be a bad idea at that time. But I do believe Paul uses the Genesis story as a metaphor as since Eve was created next she didn’t know too much about the world just as women wouldn’t know too much about the Torah, but they were very capable of learning. Another thing was that these were letters to a specific church, a church that had no clue what to do, we never hear the other side of this conversation. It could’ve been a specific issue regarding that church. I feel that out of context it implies no teaching from perfectly capable, biblically educated women. But in context it helps shuffle some old issues out.

I imagine this would've been a difficult one to communicate succinctly, especially regarding the different views on what Paul says on women teaching. Well done!

Thanks again Tim and Bible Project Crew. I have to admit I was wondering about that women as leaders bit and I came looking for this video hoping you guys could clear it up and it was right on the money. You guys are an inspiration, not to get too political but you're liberal and progressive enough to look for a more clear understanding of otherwise controversial passages that don't just clarify the bible but also put our modern lives into perspectives while still being tempered and faithful enough to not promote insufferable radical ideologies in every sermon despite living in Portland. That for me is the best of both worlds and renews my faith showing me a new way to live in love for all people and the best gifts they have to offer our world. It also paints a clearer picture of the model of new humanity that I could be if I too wrestled with god. I thank you. I would like to get a better grasp of sheol and gehenna and this metaphor of the fire if you or anyone could direct me to sermons or lectures on the subject. Kind of a macabre thing to want to learn more about but I want to get a better understanding of death, the second death, and what it means to choose death over life in the age to come and how you know if you're choosing death or life.

That’s the thing dietary preferences should never be divisive. It’s interesting learning about the problems of the early church, it’s almost like the problems and a lot of other churches today. What a book of wisdom for church leaders!( or anyone)
