I had to speed the playback up a bit because the video was way too long. I hope it doesn't bother anyone.

I wouldn't shy away from anger. It is well earned. And unlike the BookTube "incident" you mentioned, you backed it up with information and moved beyond outrage. UK BookTubers had no problem speaking about Brexit. I too , don't understand the silence of American BookTubers, except that silence to racism is the usual response. I hope this video is shared widely and thank you.

Thanks so much for your review. This book meant so much to me. I've also gotten my mom (an older white lady) to read it and she just cried throughout, at the pain and suffering those people can't escape from. I hope we can unite a bit more to protect the innocent and heal this suffering.

Thank you for this video. I'm so sad right now that I can't think straight enough to write anything. The death of Tamir Rice, 2 years ago, just broke me. This was a 12 year old... but I also am aware that the first time our country decided to try a child as an adult it was a 12 year old black boy, the first child to die in the electric chair, was a 12 year old black boy. American has always been a police state for black people. I can't wait to read this book but I'll have to wait a bit. You are not rambling or ranting at all. Thanks again for this video.

This is such an important video and so well done. Not only for your intelligent review but also for your articulate non-ranting rant. I noticed the lack of mention of the week's events and I will own up to being a Booktuber who didn't mention anything. I think part of the reason is that I felt/feel that as a white woman my voice wouldn't add anything valuable because I cannot even begin to understand or experience what the African American community is going through. I guess I worry that if I say anything it would be taken as condescension or making it "all about me". I totally agree that the world feels like it is exploding around us right now. I'm sorry that I can't add anything more eloquent to the conversation, that I can't add anything to the situation. I do truly hope you don't take this comment as condescension or anything less than authentic.

I completely agree and couldn't have said it better. I also feel as a daughter-in-law of a police officer and the mother of a son going into law enforcement that if I were to make a reaction video about the deaths in Dallas based on my fear of my these things happening to my child one day that the backlash would be so horrific. Yes. It's fear. Plain and simple. Fear. And it's sad that we have to be afraid of people we don't know saying we have no grounds to make an opinion. It's disgusting that people get up in arms when some old white dude belittles some woman's choice to wear makeup in her videos. I was so angry when these videos came out. I thought there's so much more going on that is way bigger than this and it was, in my opinion, drama. Why are we talking about makeup and insults about being a real reader when the things that Mickey is talking about here are being ignored? I'm promoting this video over all my social media outlets. More people need to see this.

+Now Voyaging I don't see it as condescending at all. I totally understand the fear of backlash. I was worried after I posted this video and dared to use #blacklivesmatter hashtag what sort of crazies might come out of the woodwork. But we can't let our fear of negative comments keep us from speaking. There's nothing wrong at all with you admitting that you don't know or you don't feel qualified to speak on the topic. Help amplify the voices that do. I love that Bustle article you tweeted with the list of books for white allies. I put several of those books on my own TBR to learn more about how race functions in other communities besides my own. YOU helped me do that. YOU started a dialogue. YOU just raised awareness. It was just so disheartening to login to Twitter feeling so heartbroken and people just aren't saying anything. No reposting of the news that this had happened. No acknowledgement whatsoever. There was so much solidarity after Orlando and while I know the death toll wasn't as great, these incidents still mattered; those deaths matter.

+dancing lizard I definitely understand the fear of backlash. There are people who would get really upset if they felt for a moment that you were privileging cops lives over black lives. Speak anyway. You have such a powerful and unique perspective. Because you have such close ties to law enforcement, to hear you say I grieve for the cops in Dallas and I fear for my family members lives but I also grieve for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile and I fear for the lives of my fellow black citizens could be powerful for someone. Anti-police brutality is not the same as anti-police. People may be more willing to hear this message from you than me because you're coming at it from a different angle.

+dancing lizard ALL of the deaths last week were caused by America's refusal to acknowledge our issues with race. Point blank. We think if we ignore it, it will go away. It won't. It'll just keep finding all these insidious ways to consume us.

Thank you so much for your reply. I totally agree, even though I don't feel qualified to speak I can at the very least promote those who can...like yourself! Thank you for making this video. I feel like today our society isn't comfortable having difficult conversations about topics such as sexuality, religion, and race because there is a belief that a difficult or challenging conversation automatically leads to confrontation. I don't believe this is the case but I do think that I let my fear overrule my desire to speak up or do something to help. Thank you again for this video and your reply.

I just discovered your channel through the discussions and got so much out of your description of Ghettoside although I've heard it reviewed before ...but what most touched me ..to tears.. were your last words "Im tired"...it just gutted me....my close black friends are afraid for their children, especially their boys, and made them stay home this weekend....the are two parallel worlds between the black and white experience and until this is "fixed" people will be exhausted from pain, unfairness, Prejudice.

The book was very good. I take from the book that there is a convoluted knot of challenges facing the prosecution of homicide in Watts and other high crime areas. The systemic issues developed over time that have caused black folks to distrust cops and the legal system are a main issue. This has led witnesses to avoid testifying against perpetrators since the cops can’t adequately protect the witnesses from retaliation from others in the community. And there are so many homicides that the detectives can’t adequately solve even half of them. So many problems layered on problems that it makes the whole situation just sad.

I'm tired, too. This has been happening since forever but our talk about police brutality was always answered with "bringing up the race card". Now with increasing video evidence (seeing is supposed to be believing) the response is to just discredit the victim. I'm still furious over Tamir Rice! I have no words. Thanks for the video.

+booksnq sending hugs and good vibes your way sis. I'm trying really hard to feel positive. To find the desire and strength to continue fighting. I feel like I already know what the outcome is going to be. My only hope now comes from the fact that Philando Castile for all intents and purposes, appears to be an upstanding citizen. They're having a hard time digging up dirt on him. Maybe that'll help. I don't know. I actually wish that I could pretend like nothing is happening but alas, I don't have that privilege. Going to try and rest this weekend and get up on Monday to fight the good fight.

I completely completely agree. I think that after you posted this a bunch of videos have been popping up in my feed about it and I am so grateful for this. I have many reasons for not having posted anything and I don't want to make excuses, but I do look at this as a happy place for me and thinking about what is going on in our country, even just listening to you talk, makes me cry and feel extremely hopeless and desperate and like what is the point of even being here? I know this is not an excuse, and I think now I will probably try to post something if I can make a video that makes any sense and isn't a disaster. Another extremely upsetting part of this whole situation is what is happening to the men that are filming the killing of these black men. When Alton Sterling was killed two men filmed his death and both of them were arrested...for no reason. And it is UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE. One of them was accused of having a warrant for his arrest for assault and battery, but it didn't exist, and then he was still held with no bail/bond for unpaid tickets. He was arrested for having unpaid parking/traffic tickets. I honestly cannot deal with it. Everything you are saying is just so perfect Mickey, you are so well spoken. I must get this book.

This is a very important video, Mickey. I don't think you should apologize for voicing your feelings. I can only speak of myself, but after Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin (which happened 5 minutes from where I live), Freddie Gray, Eric Garner... it becomes really disheartening to see how nothing seems to be changing or helping black families. I'm at a loss for words at this point, I feel like all the anger that I felt throughout all their deaths (but especially Tamir who was just a child) evaporated into thin air. And I'm not even black, I can only imagine how black families are feeling right now! It's just horrible. I have posted my feelings in my personal social media, I like to keep my booktube channel just centered on books but to be honest, even if I shared more personal thoughts on my booktube channel I don't think I would at this point, I think if a child can get murdered on camera for no real reason, and the cops can get away with it with everyone watching, what will it take for there to be real change? I just don't know what we will do as a nation anymore. My thoughts are all over the place, I hope I make some sense.

I live in France and we have heard about what happened in the media but not that much... I really agree with you that we are a community that should speak up when we want to. I guess for me I felt like it wasn't my place, that might be stupid but I felt like I couldn't really understand what was happening and didn't really have words for a video. I didn't do a video either for Orlando. I just don't want to do videos if I don't know what I'm going to say and I prefer to do it when I feel like it, with the right words. But thank you for doing this video, it was powerful and really important.

And given that a LOT of people within this Booktube community have such agency, and so much powerf to make change? That is VERY unfortunate. I'm trying to change that because I don't believe that this is how it's meant to be. This community needs to be challenged and awakened to the fact that people within its midst are being affected by real life stuff. Stuff that should at least warrant a frickin' tweet. A mention. An instagram post. It's upsetting. No more. I'm calling people out.

I understand where you're coming from. I've been tweeting the videos I've been seeing and am horrified each and everyday when I open my phone. Some people are frankly speaking afraid to say anything. You can try to change the way Booktube reacts to issues like this, but you'll be wasting your time. Most Booktubers are far removed from diverse subjects, especially like this. This being said it's not hard to just stand up to say Stop! Enough! However some Booktubers have expressed things on other social media outlets, just not on Booktube.
@ChristinaMarie19

I actually don't think I'm wasting my time, it's unfortunate that you think I am. As we ask the majority not to do to us, I refuse to lump this entire community into a one big assumption. I've personally already spoken to several people within the Booktube community, as have been very successful. My goal isn't to "change Booktube". My goal is to change minds. And Booktube is an excellent medium. Education and support is what this community needs and I aim to help with that, if I can. And yes, people have spoken up on other social media, I'm well aware of that. I am one of those people.

how can you not react when such a thing happen? it is overwhelming, i have tried filming a video but i guess i should keep trying because no matter what something has to be said. i tried talking about this issue and even in france, people feign outrage but i can feel that the heart is not in it. i mean how oblivious can people continue to be about the fact that issues over are not over and not near to be over if it is not adress. i want to talk about it, but the moment i start all this sadnest, bitterness, anger, hopelessness just pour out of me and i feel so defeated especially in face of such planetary silence.

I'm almost halfway into this book and I couldn't agree more with your review. Ghettoside should be required reading for all the ways it has made me think and rethink how we approach race, policing, crime, etc. I've been aware for a long time how entrapping environments of poverty & crime are, but I had no idea before this book how deeply the issue affects those on every side of the law. As confusing as the times are right now, only one thing is clear: this system is not working.

On the topic of booktube's silence I have various thoughts and opinions. One is that I know that some have booktube and private social media, so maybe they use those to express political opinion because they want to leave booktube for bookish topics - which include the sexist comment in the community, but not anything outside of it? One that is true for me is, I am not American, or in America, and although I don't understand how this is still happening, I don't feel it is my part to comment on it. Being German I am much closer to the shit that is going down here and I don't make videos about that either. Another one is that not everyone is a loud and active poilitical advocate or speaker. But honestly I cannot say anything about others, only myself and I don't understand what is going on these days anymore as there is just more and more hate and nothing gets better and everything just gets worse. Instead of moving closer in this age of information and knowledge people move further and further apart, being scared of each other and turning more and more selfish, refusing responsibility for others.

+1book1review I totally get that some people just don't want to use their channel for political purposes though I would challenge that decision especially since a lot of us are engaging with books that are steeped in the politics of an author's time and place. Books and politics have never been mutually exclusive. But I can respect if you only want to talk about books. But there are people who do engage in politics on their channels or on their social medias who haven't said anything. This is about more than people arguing about political ideologies. People died. People are still dying. So many people posted after the Orlando shootings and nobody had a problem voicing the ways in which anti-LGBT sentiment led to those deaths. I don't understand why people aren't doing the same here. I definitely understand while Booktubers outside of America are maybe not engaging with the topic as much. I definitely had American booktubers in mind when I posted this video. But the confusion and the frustration you just expressed in this comment about the state of our world is needed. It tells me that you see and believe that something horrible has happened. Because there are a lot of people out there with their heads buried in the sand who want to pretend like nothing has happened. Sam from Novels and Nonsense posted a tweet on Thursday night where she basically encouraged us to love a little harder in the face of what's going on right now. She didn't directly engage with the topic but she let her followers know hey, I see and recognize that something awful has happened and I acknowledge that many people are hurting. It's small but it means something. We underestimate how important our voices are.

***** thanks for the long response. Of course I cannot speak for reasons why American booktubers don't speak out about it, but I understand your frustration and what you are asking for better now. Maybe videos will come in future days, booktubers need a little time sometimes to process their thoughts. There were a few in my inbox this morning, so don't give up on the community, and don't let the silence stop you from talking about it.

Mickey, what you seem to be implying is that since the victims are black, "society" doesn't care and the murders aren't solved. However, isn't the truth that if the killers were white, there would be large scale outrage from BLM, Jesse jackson, Sharpton and the liberal establishment? Wouldn't white on black killings generate a demand that the killers be brought to justice? I know this isn't the politically correct point of view but it seems as liberals react to killings of black men only when killed by whites or police
