I rarely feel urgency about finishing series, one reason I have a lot in progress. But 'm reading two manga series I want to finish. One is ongoing, one completed - Spy x Family and Honey and Clover. I also want to finish the Heartstopper books. These are all part of my physical TBR, which is my main focus in 2024 along with reading 24 different Asian or Asian American authors. I am curious about what you will think of the next Roanhorse book and the sequel to Vita Nostra. But you should read whichever series you are in the mood for. Thanks for the recs.

You need to finish the Stormlight archive books! They are so good! I need to finish that series as well I’m on book three and I also need to finish the defy the night series and the stolen heir series. I need to read the last two deft the night books and the last stolen heir book that’s o it so far.

Sanderson recently confirmed that in his mind he is pretty much committed to doing a cyberpunk era for mistborn, bringing the total number of eras to 5.

It will be 8-10 years before we get Stormlight 6 according to Brandon Sanderson, which really sucks. There will be a in universe timejump of about 10 to 15 years as well. We will be following some characters that don't get a lot of POVs in the first half of the series (i. e. Jasnah, Renarin, Lift) and the main characters of the first five books that are still around will be secondary characters. Book 5 will end the first arc of the story, but we will only really get the end in Stormlight 10. I really hope the end of book 5 is satisfying enough because it's really a lot of time to be waiting for the next book.

Personally, I’m trying to wait until series are complete before i start reading them because then it makes it easier to just read all the books at once. Lots of series here I’d also like to read lol

something like this is unfortunately harmful to the authors - they plan a series, but if the first parts do not sell well enough, the publishing houses give up publishing subsequent parts 😞

I stopped reading unfinished series, at least for novels. I still read ongoing manga, but I have a rule to only read finished arcs. I used to pick up books as soon as they come out to give them the love and hype they deserve. But I'm over it now. I served my time and fulfilled my duty towards the bookish community 😂 Let GenZ take over. This millennial wants less angst in her life 🧘

As someone who's read through Wheel of Time twice in its entirety, I think the ending is ABSOLUTELY worth it. Sanderson knocked it out of the park. I remember the first time I read it I was crying so much I couldn't see the letters on my kindle 😂😂. It makes me really excited for Stormlight, like I know what Sanderson is capable of and I don't think any of us is ready

I just finished my re-read of "Black Sun" and "Fevered Star" and I cannot wait for "Mirrored Heavens". I think "Between Earth and Sky" is going to be one of my favorite trilogies of all times. I am saving "The Burning Kingdoms" for Autumn so I can read them back to back, just in time for "The Lotus Empire".

I just finished the Cosmere and I am concerned that you will stop at Oathbringer…my fav books in the Cosmere are Rhythm of war and Words of Radiance tied. Oathbringer was not my favorite, but trust me it’s worth it to get to book 4

I am so excited for The Fury of the Gods and The Lotus Empire. I started and finished the first two books in both of those trilogies this year and I will drop everything the day they get released 🫡 I’m 50/50 on whether or not I burn through a series quickly. Sometimes I spread them out because I’m worried about burnout or putting myself in a slump, especially if they’re heavy books.

I loved black sun, it was so good!!! Sadly I wasn’t the biggest fan of the second book, it felt a lot like a filler book. But I’m hopeful for the third one!

I definitely don't want to binge-read series back-to-back (I like to break up what I read in style, genre, etc.), so yeah, I'm one of those people who start a series then end up realizing I've read the first book of, like, 20 series. 🤦‍♀ I'm currently working my way through the Lady Astronauts by Mary Robinette Kowal, the Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan, and the Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan. As for the ones I'm *not* currently working my way through...let's not talk about those.

I always feel inspired by your finishing series posts! And you read so many big, chunky fantasy series! Last week, I made an online promise to finish or catch up to current book in 5 series this year: Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire The Alchemy Wars by Ian Tregillis Alex Stern duology by Leigh Bardugo Finishing School series by Gail Carriger Beartown trilogy by Fredrik Backman To finish them, I will have to read 5 books, 3 novellas, 2 short stories, and reread 2 books because it's been too long since I read them. This is wildly ambitious for me since last year, without picking any series in particular, I intended to get some series finished and managed to finish zero.

I love binge reading series …it’s like visiting friends lol. If I start a new series and there’s only one or two books out, it does take me time to get back to it, which is why I prefer a series with a lot of books or already completed!

You won't regret reading The Wheel of Time. I loved it. It's a lot of fun and while there's a bump it's 100% worth it. Myself I'm rereading The Wheel of Time and will buy (and read) the Discworld books. Not this year, just in the future.

I’m really intrigued to see what you think of The Great Hunt cos I hated it. Even though I enjoyed book 1. We either have very similar reading taste, or opposite, and I want to be entertained by your perspective on book 2, no matter what side you fall on (like or not). 😂 You’re also making me want to assess what series I’m in the middle of because I have absolutely lost track. I used to always binge read series back-to-back, but I started not liking it since the books all start to blend together. So now I try to read all the books relatively soon after each other, but with a different book or two in between, and I’ve been loving that!

Would love to see you read The Eye of the World Series. I’m rereading/starting the series over myself. I read books 1-8 when they came out but didn’t realize until recently that Sanderson finished the series cuz it was incomplete when I first read it. Now that it’s complete, I’ve started it again and am about to start book 3. I think I enjoyed The Great Hunt more than book 1 actually.

Not worried about finishing series... learned my lesson when I started reading Michael Anderle's The Kurterian Gambit series that spawns multiple sub series written by other authors (with Anderle's approval/blessing) ... you literally need a wiki page if you want to read the books sort of chronologically, I think there's over 200 books overall in the "universe". I finished quite a few long vampire themed series like Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, or Kerrelyn Sparks' Love At Stake series... had a period where I was obsessed with vampires.

I finished City of Miracles a month ago, I'll admit that the second book wasn't my favourite but the last one was perfect. At least to me, the best of the trilogy and I think you'll like it too

I did think WoT got sloggy for a bit, but even in those books the endings were generally really awesome, making you want to pick up the next one. The exception is book 10, which to me was definitely the sloggiest of the lot and didn't even have an exciting ending... But after that it's such a ride until the finish line! Book 11 is great, and my favorite book in the series was actually the 14th and final one! It's a long journey, but to me it was definitely worth it in the end.

I'll be rereading Shadow and Hunger of the Gods. I rec reading a detailed synopsis of Shadow before Hunger bc it took me a long time to untangle the story in Hunger bc it had been a while since I read Shadow. Fires of Vengeance is good, can't wait till book 3! Just got Dragon Rider by Taran Matharu hoping it Rage of Dragons vibes.

The wheel of time fandom definitely needs to stop with the “beware, four long boring books in the middle” nonsense, I gave these “boring books” 4.5, 4.5, 5, and 3 stars respectively, they were a break from the epic scale, and they’re much shorter than the rest, the series has the best (female) villains in fantasy, and I just think everyone should experience this story or at least try

I'm the same I have so many series to finish. But I'm working through them now, especially sun eater I've only one main book to read. But then he releases new books almost as fast as Sanderson. But I won't be finishing any Sanderson, I'm not giving money to the Mormon church to help them defend paedos. Like fighting a legal battle that 3 bishops knowing a man SAd a baby and not reporting him was protecting the church. But hey I guess becoming a god and getting his own planet is worth that to Sanderson. Mat is one of my favourite wot characters, but I love tricksters, plus the sort of Han Solo/Tony Stark I'm not a hero until shtf

I need to finish the Poppy War ASAP before I forget too much of the plot! 😅 I haven't started the Stormlight archives yet because I know it's way too long in between releases and I have yet to start Games of Throne for the same reasons! 😅 I need to restart La passe-miroir par Christelle Dabos. Started it last fall but think I need to reread the first novel and read the three others in a row. I used to be so good at series but think I no longer am. I also have several other series on my shelves I want to get to soon... plus an elongating TBR! 😅 Ha! I need to continue Wheel of time too! I read the first two so far (if I'm not mistaken?!)... 😅😅😅

The way you described Vita Nostra reminds me of Buffy The Vampire Slayer 🤔. Now I’m more curious. I’ve had it in my kindle for a while and I haven’t read it. Need to get to it this year! I am the same way as you. I have a series that I have saved the last book for years because I didn’t want it to end. And other books I started and have the intention of continuing but haven’t gone back to them yet. I just enjoy reading stand alone so much. But I know if it’s a good series I’ll get sucked right back in once I get it going. Have to push myself!

I usually am the type to read series back to back, but some slip through the cracks. The Ramesses II series written by Christian Jacq (he was a french egyptologist, who wrote many book - fiction and nonfiction about old Egypt) comes to mind. Its a re imagining of bits of Ramesses life divided by 5 books. I had to hunt down the books during many years to find them (all in secondhand bookshops). Currently i have all the books but haven't read the 5th one (but to read it i have to reread all, because i don't remember much).

The Wheel of Time is honestly amazing, also starting from book two it really becomes it’s own thing and is not so trope like the first one. And yes books 8-10 are known as the “slog” but they honestly aren’t even that bad since the information that we get from those books are really necessary for the story and books 11-14 are really worth it. What is much more burdensome to me personally was the constant repetition of everything. It makes sense since these books were written over a really long time period, but it gets really jarring if you binge the series.

I have concentrated on older sci-fi and fantasy series this year. I want to finish the witches series for Discworld, reread the Dune series and the Speaker of the Dead series. I have honestly a spreadsheet of 64 series I have partially read and I’d like to either finish them or finally DNF them.

I start too many series. I like reading them consecutively and so that when I can. But part of the problem is that if the author is still writing the series, you can't finish it. I am reading a lot of long series. :) I usually end up re-reading at least a couple of books in the series if it has been a year since I read the last one.

Wheel of Time?! Yes! Fab series. Reading it’s definitely a project, but the payoffs are worth it. The middle of the series does get a bit slumpy though.

I have to read the books of a series back to back as much as possible because I don't usually reread books but have a terrible memory. :D This is why I'm procrastinating starting new series lately. I need to read the last book of the Terra Ignata series tho. I didn't like the second book of Vita Nostra nearly as much as the first. It misses the mystery of the first book and the main romance is not great. I really liked the first book and the second one ruined it a bit for me.

Books in Dyachenko series are not technically connected, so if you're expecting to find resolution in 2nd book.. don't. I mean I want you to read them, just want to save from disappointment if you were waiting to see the same characters

I am terrible for finishing series. On really long series, I usually quit around 7 or 8 books. I’m also really bad at trilogies. I read and enjoy the first book and then just don’t pick up the second.

I read the entire Wheel of Time series and boy did Brandon Sanderson really screw up the ending imo. I know he's your favourite author Emily, but personally I find his character writing lacks depth and I will honestly never read another book by him after what he did to Wheel of Time. 😅

Am I the only one who liked the 2nd Mistborn series more than the 1st Mistborn series? I liked the first 3 just fine. But come on, the more modern setting and the characters are just better in my opinion. I don't cry at books and the end of Shadows of Self made me tear up a little. I really related to the female characters more, especially Steris. I am trying to make my uncle read the series cause I think he'll be one of the few people who agrees with me that the 2nd series is better.

I am binge reader. I try the first one and start hoarding the others. When they are all out I start them. If something gone wrong I dnf the whole series and unhaul 😂

Ive never been the kind to read series back to back, i feel like i need some diversity in writing stule or I get bored. But I have a list of series I want to at least try, and most of them are on your list (basically all of yours plus Discworld). Is it realistic for me to read tgat many big books? No, but realism is overrated.

There's been about 4-5 series where I read the first book and give it 4, sometimes 5 stars, and then I just never pick up the sequel because I don't care anymore. Why am I like this?

I did not like Lost Metal. I felt like Wayne regressed and was sooo annoying. If you feel like you struggle just out it down and have someone spoil it.

if it makes you feel any better i almost never read a series back to back (sometimes i can if it’s a reread) because i just can’t be in the same world for that long. maybe it’s my ADHD brain but it’s a serious problem because it means my list of series to finish is incredibly long.

I would just keep Eye of the world as a standalone if I were you. It will go down on the quality soon. Especially the female characters.

There’s a difference between a city and a neighbourhood. Most of the people in that neighbourhood never leave it. Even in the TV show it’s very clear.

@@Akuliszi yeah i read it almost a year ago now but if i remember correctly it was to numb the pain- when he couldn't keep it down the first time he had to try again and she said he had to drink it all for it to work
