The character development for Rand and the other main characters is one of my favorite parts of WoT. Regarding the Chosen, I never thought of the Death Eaters from Harry Potter (😆), but that might be because I’m older, and WoT started about seven years before Harry Potter did. They basically have the same function, though - scary but somehow incompetent villains. Great review!

When Rand thought that he could outsmart the Aes Sedai my brain was like "Honey, you have a big storm coming." Lol Egwene and Gawin (can't remember how to write his name lol) just pretty much came out of nowhere. RJ keep mentioning that Egwene was all about Galad, so It came as a shock when it just wasn't the couple. I realized the change when she happen to comment that she dreamed more about him that Galad. I was like wait... What? I remember back in book 4 I believe it was when Faile insisted to go with Perrin in the ways and he didn't. She started to behave in a certain way and it felt to me like she was edging him to behave in a certain way. When he ends up hitting her she calmed down. And that was super weird to me. Books 6 clarified that in the sense that Faile's mother told Perrin how she started to straight up respect his partner when he went physical with her. I connected all the dots in my head and well that's so weird. Faile rubs me the wrong way now. She forced her culture on him, I mean if you dislike his passive attitude go marry a Saeldean be done with it.

My favorite part of the book was Perrin telling the wolves that Rand was in trouble. It made the wolf name for him click in my mind. Back in the Great Hunt I just assumed they were impressed by what he did to get the horn and dagger back. But Shadow Killer doesn't mean a man who kills in the dark, it means THE man who kills THE capital 'S' Shadow. The wolves know he is the chosen one, and he can't do what he must if he is in a cage. Matt joining Nynaeve, Elayne and company on an adventure had so much potential. But they just spent the whole journey being ass holes to each other. And then they get to the city and the girls start avoiding Matt all together. I hated how pointless all that ended up being besides setting up the next book I guess. But the rest of the book was pretty good imo. Egwaene and Gawyn wasn't so out of the blue for me. They got to know each over a couple months "off screen" when she was a novice at the White Tower. It was clear to me for several books that Gawyn liked her a lot but didn't act on it because Gallard did too. Egwaene falling in love because of the dream is a little odd, but I buy it. I just didn't understand why she didn't tell him that she was literally in the room when Rand found out his mom was dead. That the only reason Rand went to Andor was to avenge her and secure the lion throne for Elayne. Gawyn hating Rand over a false rumor is dumb.

Great review. Thanks! This book totally assassinated Gawyn's character. Regardless of his idiocy towards Rand, he continued to follow the Aes Sedai even after they tortured Min. Then he has the audacity to ask Min to leave with him and threaten Rand? Total d-bag. He should have died in that battle. Plot armor saved him. Virtually every relationship in this series is bad, but Egwene's sudden love for Gawyn is among the most ludicrous. They were together literally for 2 pages and we were 4000 pages into the series at that point. Is anyone smart enough to ask why Rand would kill Morgase? Why would Rahvin even? Morgase is obviously still alive. We agree on most everything but not on Min/Rand. Her reunion with him was one of the best scenes in the book. It is SO refreshing to see a man and a woman actually act like they are glad to see each other. Rarely happens in this series. Her attempt to get Rand to see her as more than a friend in the build-up to the kidnapping is one of my favorite parts in the entire series. She is the best female character in the series, and Rand totally needs a woman who doesn't channel. Their relationship is one of the few good ones in the series. Aviendha was all passion and Elayne was insta-love. Min was a true friend first. Egwene is too perfect. She always does the right thing. Should have chosen Galad. Her as an 18 year old Amyrlin is a lot to stomach. There are Aes Sedai that are over a hundred years old, and they are following a teenager? Come on. Somewhat slow book with a fantastic ending.

8:50 the apparent contradiction you pointed out between dying in Tel'aran'rhiod vs not being able to affect the real world from there is an interesting point, I never actually noticed that. But now that you bring it up, I think the clarification is simply that when you are in T'a'r, a part of you is actually there and so can be affected there. Inanimate objects you interact with there are not the thing itself but a reflection of it, and you can't affect a thing through its reflection.

So far you're pretty on point with your pronunciations; I say them the same way. Love that you mentioned Rand meeting the Two Rivers girls in the inn (especially Mat's sister Bode!) It was a great juxtaposition of where he came from and how far he's come. Rand is technically descended from House Mantear, through Tigraine. He and Galad are half-brothers, and you should know all that by the end of LoC. I agree with you about how awesome Egwene is. The Old Blood sings in her as well as it does in Mat or Perrin, and Mat, Nynaeve and Elayne are into some fun times in Ebou Dar. Now that you mention it, the Forsaken are kind of ding-dongs sometimes. Like, they're all evil, but they go down kind of easy sometimes. Mat, Olver, and the Band are great. And Dumai's Wells is a real high point of the series - I think if you go back and watch some of the big battle scenes from Apocalypse Now or We Were Soldiers, you'll get an idea of what Dumai's Wells was like. Glad you're coming back around and giving it 5 stars. It definitely deserves it! It's been a year or so since I last read LoC so it's a little fuzzy, but I dug your chronological format more. Other highlights of the book for me were: The rooster joke Mangin's hanging (mainly just because I was noticing him more ahead of time) Rand setting up the academies to establish a legacy of peace and not just destruction. Herid Fel and the steamwagon. Perrin meeting his in-laws for the first time. Claudia Black is my head canon Deira Bashere. Olver with his game of Snakes and Foxes was always good, though just to head off speculation, he's not Gaidal Cain reborn.

Be forewarned that in 7-9 (except the end of 9) nothing really happens. Oh and for Malazan make sure you read Night of Knives by Ian Cameron Esslemont after Midnight Tides and before Bonehunters, Erikson wrote his 10 while leaving in gaps for Esslemont’s books, so things will make more sense if you read his concurrently. They’re different, but they’re a good change of pace for the Malazan world when Erikson starts to get pretty philosophical towards the end, Esslemont always keeps things moving. In the below URL you can scroll down to bottom it has the fans suggested reading order which was really good for my first time through, the only thing I disagree with is the random placing of the KB and Bauchelain novellas, I liked reading them all in a row malazan.fandom.com/wiki/Suggested_reading_order

I didn't have the adverse reaction to Gawyn at the beginning of the series that everyone else seems to have. I get that he's a bit bland but what exactly makes you hate him at that point? I totally agree he and Eugene is a completely forced romance out of the blue, they have like nothing in common. But at that point in the series Gawyn was more of a "meh I don't really care" character and not so much a "I can't stand this guy" character. Interested to hear anyone's take on this.

I know this comment is one year old but... Here goes. I dislike Gawyn because first he sides with Elaida and the usurpers of the White Tower and in fact leads his Younglings in the killing of their own masters and the Warders who trained them. Even after finding out that Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne are a part of the rebel faction in Salidar, he continues to support Elaida and her unlawful seat of authority. He hates Rand... Why? Because "Rand killed his mother and took the throne for himself?" Just talk to Rand or anyone close to him. Why does no one tell him that Rand only took Andor because it was being occupied by one or the Forsaken? I mean, he just seems to adopt and accept whatever is told to him from whatever source, of course except the people closest to him and the people he should be able to trust.

I took a class on Zoroastrianism at college. IIRC the Prof (this was like '03) said the religion was based on the theory that in the beginning there was one divine being who was alone. Then he met someone. An asshole. The whole point of creation is to destroy the asshole. The devil's armies will always be greater, but they will spend so much of their time feuding amongst themselves that the Lord of Light will emerge victorious. Always reminded me of the Forsaken. So some of the Forsaken are truly worthy opponents who surprise both you and the heroes up until TG. But most of them are over-rated mooks and spend more time sabotaging each-other than fighting their enemies. On Gawyn: There is an in-universe explanation. Getting sucked into someone's ream is supposed to be bad. Perhaps of you get sucked into someone's dream because they love (or hate) you you you inherit that emotion? Most people think that's weak and just think RJ screwed this up, and go on hating Gawyn. But it is an explanation and it does exist. On Faile: keep in mind the PoV character. Perin knows she's jealous but he never bothers to ask her why. Her rival has an Aes Sedai helping with her hair, a maid even on campaign, etc. That means that Faile could be jealous of Berelain's magical hair, or her fashionable dress, or that lancers have pretty lacquered armor, or how the woman sashays. Perrin just assumes she's worried that Perrin will sleep around, without asking, and deals with this by telling her that she shouldn't be jealous. Which means it's entirely possible that if he just ignored the jealous smell nothing would come of it. But we never find out, because Perrin is too clueless to figure out that he's part of the problem. IIRC he does this in front of the woman who is specifically trying to make her jealous, which means the rational human conclusion for both of them is that Perrin is about two sashays away from leaving Faile. And he also never tells either one of them that the reason he knows Faile is jealous is he can smell emotions. The endings are great for you newbies. I had to wait 30 months for the next book. One of the reasons the prologues got so long is they would be marketing for the next book. Starting 8ish they were released online a few months before the book.

Was cool to get some big action scenes. Book 5 was a bit boring to me and this book as a nice pay off. I disliked Gawyn almost as much as I disliked Galad. I love the scene early in the series where Mat beats them both simultaneously in a sparring match using his quarterstaff. Whatever format you use for spoiler reviews works for me. Samael knew rand won't accept the truce and actually didn't want rand to accept the truce because he wants to actually fight and kill him but he was commanded to do so he just half assed it purposefully... It makes sense more than how you make it sound even if this book to me is one of the worst wheel of time book which is saying a lot... But you aren't saying anything about Matt suddenly getting the sudden case of the stupid around the girls, even more stupid than jordan normally makes him around the girls or other MCs to make him subjugated and susceptible to listen to their commands (because god forbid anything can be just requested from him like he's an human being on their level) and move the plot along... I hate when writers disrespect their characters like that and make them stupid or meek just to subdue them and jordan does this a lot and always out of the blue and jarringly clumsily like how he subdued moraine for rand using that method and nanyeve for egwene and alayne... If you can't write fluid and believable subjugation based on the logical exchange of characters using their personalities, then you should know that you've gotten something wrong with what you're trying to do with that character... And it's not as if he didn't have enough space to do so considering how much time he wasted on his stupid dumb japanese anime immature irritating love conversation of he loves me he loves me not filler that he seems to love and drown his books overwhelming with without even considering the tone or the pace of where he places them in...

@@shawnn7502 Hi Shawn! It's three years later now and I'm almost done with the series (still enjoying it!), and thankfully Min's character has grown a lot. It's okay to critique when you aren't appreciating where a character is going or how they're being written, and for me, in this specific book, Min was written from a weaker angle for sure. Love that you love her!💖
