Boot time comparison of MEGA65 and TheC64 MAXI (English)

People have been talking about the boot time of TheC64 MAXI a bit lately. So we decided to do a quick comparison with the MEGA65. We already knew the MEGA65 would be much faster, which it is, but TheC64 MAXI does a pretty good job for emulation, and is of course designed to be much cheaper. It's just great that there are so many cool 8-bit hardware projects at the moment!

There is no real comparison here. One is a functioning computer, the other is an emulator with a keyboard. I will definitely be investing in the MEGA 65 when its released for general purchase.

The mega will be a lot more expensive than the maxi, so if you're just looking to scratch that nostalgia itch, it might be a better choice. I will likely get both,

MEGA 65 v MAXI wow its like comparing the A500 equiped with a vampire against the Atari flashback! I own a MAXI but it won't stop me burying a M65 thanks for a other great video

I'm really impressed by design and amount of work dedicated to a project. I buy one when it become available. I hope that final product will be equipped with ASIC chip. There is a company called Europractice IC Service that gives discounts on chip production. Maybe it's time to offer some market store possibility to have unique premium product? Dream big and make it big. I would add some possibility to connect and transfer data to arduino uno via basic command - for educational purpose simple robotics / home automation. In Gdansk in mechanical workshop C64 works for a quarter of a century as supporting computer for a balancing machine. Many people which aren't professional programmers would like to have machine which is small compact and could use it for years. I would gladly use it as supporting computer for my jet turbine test stand why - in early days I program 8-bit Atari what I hate in modern PC - constant migration library issues and I don't have a time to tacking all updates. Make it like AK47 - not the best, but most reliable and easy to learn. C65 was an excellent choice. 8/16 bit design is a ideal for hobbyist which would like to "what is inside the box"

THEC64 Maxi has to boot the Linux kernal first then the emulator so it would be slower.The Mega 65 boots straight into its own Basic Kernel so would be faster.Its like the Bios on a PC.

I went to the website to check but I could not find out specifically what the video output options are. Will SCART RGB analogue video output be supported for use on regular TVs like a Sony Trinitron CRT etc from the EU?

At the moment we have VGA and HDMI as the video outputs. But it is all open-source, so it should be possible to make a SCART compatible output mode, using just a VGA to SCART adapter and some changes to the VHDL to make a combined SCART compatible SYNC signal. This is the kind of thing that we can look at once we have the machine itself out the door. But for now, we need to focus on getting the essentials done. Paul.

+MEGA65 I am super thrilled that there is an Ethernet port on the back of the Mega 65! Also, I am head over heels for the transparent case on the development kits as I have loved clear electronics for as long as I can remember! These points bring up two main (plus additional) questions I have about the Mega 65: A: Does the Ethernet port mean that there will be near-future support for connecting the Mega 65 to the internet? B: Will the transparent casing design language carry over to the official production models of the Mega 65? Also C: Will there be near-future support for USB and ideally USB 3.1 Type A and Type C?

A: Yes, we already have a proof-of-concept HTTP client with DHCP auto-configuration. B: Final machines will be "Commodore-ish beig-ish"-ish, and look like the original C65 prototypes. Whether we also offer clear cases is something we haven't decided. C: USB is only supported for the debug interface, as we wanted to make an authentic 8-bit computer, and that means no "big" CPUs and no complex OS software, which means in turn, no USB. But you have real joystick ports and a keyboard to die for, and an expansion port if someone really wants to make a USB interface, but it not on our priority list at the moment. Paul.

I think that both are cool but for emulation I like the idea of upgrading the Maxi to a BMC64 emulator by changing the main board to a Raspberry PI. That way it would boot to BASIC in 4 seconds and would have 9-pin joystick ports and less less latency. The MEGA65 is a dream machine but as I can see it costs more than my main home PC :(

DevKits will hopefully go out in Oct or Nov this year. Production machines in 2021.

Looks like batch 2 is shipping now from Trenz Electronic. It needs some components which took much time to source, e.g. the floppy disk drive.

Yeah, and one of them is actually available to buy right now, while the other one keeps slipping into the future year after year, after year, with no clear release date in sight.

I think BMC emulator currently beats the Mega 65 to cursor !..

It's possible. The main delay for the MEGA65 is our real 8-bit CPU prodding the SD card and loading the ROM. If we skip that, then the total time is about 0.3 seconds, possibly a fraction less. But it's probably fair to say it is diminishing returns at that point. We actually think that the TheC64's boot time is not really a problem anyway, certainly not for its intended typical uses.

@@MEGA65retro Yeah boot time is no problem at all when we are talking a few seconds. With the C64 part of the deal, general timing and quality of the SID reproduction are the main things. I still think you need to make sure you have native video resolution output for the hardcore users.
