Borderline Personality Disorder and Invalidating environments
People with BPD often find themselves living in invalidating environments that do not understand what they are going through.
People with BPD are living in a constant state of distress and appear overly emotional to others. Friends and family might ask the person to just snap out of it or stop being so emotional which does not help. Over time maladaptive behaviors develop as a means of communicating distress. These behaviors can include self-harm, eating disorders, suicide attempts, and substance use. They serve to regulate intense emotions. Since most people will respond with support once the behavior escalates it serves to reinforce the behavior making it more likely to occur in the future.
