On that gap when you screw the starboard together...we face a similar issue in woodworking. To get around it, we use screws that are not threaded all the way to the head. Also drill the fore piece to the screw shaft diameter...not just a pilot hole. That all works to pull the pieces together flush & tight.

When joining two pieces of starboard with screws, you mentioned the problem of having a gap between them after the screws have been tightened. The way I avoid this is similar to wood working. Drill the top piece slightly larger than the bottom piece so that the screw threads do not engage w the top. It allows the top to move and clamp naturally to the bottom, creating a nice snug joint.

Yo I use alien tape. And if you have to, you can double it up. Clean the surface with acetone.

Yeah in a week or two it will be just glue on the deck. Why not use coosa and epoxy it to the deck and roll some non skid over it
@Kowalski301

Agree, it's PE. But it is pretty easy to create a mechanical bond/lock to such plastic, if you simply drill a few holes at different angles and and fill them with epoxy or drill straight holes and countersink them on the top, then fill it with epoxy to essentially create "epoxy screws" For even stronger bond on bigger pieces, you can also use a key-hole router bit, and carve out several holes on the backside, then fill them with thicken epoxy.

I'm still testing it, but I've done this on a boat 4 years ago and it's still holding. It's the only thing that has ever stuck to starboard, so we'll see how it goes, and in 5 years if both are still holding, then hey, we've finally found something that can stick to starboard! Lol :)

At 4:54 the better way to avoid that gap is to use a counter sink just a little bit on one of the pieces in the gap after you pre-drill. This will allow the screws to suck the pieces together the first time. Gluing Starboard. Good luck with that.

Thinking of securing a board of some kind to mount bilge pump and remote flost switch to. How's it holding up? Is this plastic weld water proof? Wondering how well the bond will hold up in a greasy bilge.

Should have used phenol or GRP strips glued with epoxy. GRP profiles and plate can be DIY-made, found as scrap from old boat parts, or bought as stock materials. This is a great channel, but would not rely on bonding Starboard.

Can you do a short video with the results of mounting the fuel tank? I'm curious to see what that looks like. Thanks.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 8 ай бұрын
I ended up just using one, towards the back. So that bracket I made, I stuck it behind the fuel tank and left the front one off. It just keeps the tank from sliding back. When the tank has fuel in it, it doesn't move at all! And this leaves the freedom to switch tanks and move stuff around in the back giving more deck space to put a livewell or traps or whatever, depending on how the boats being used. So lol I just glued the one L bracket that I made in front of the bilge pump and the tank sits against it and it keeps it from sliding back.

I have thought about using velcro to mount a few things without having to drill any holes. The problem is I have used a heavey duty velcro to mount a solar flood light on a metal pool enclosure. When I wanted to remove the velcro I couldn't. It's so adhered to the metal I can't get it off. I tried everything to get it off. It's still there😂. I'm afraid to use it on my boat it would probably rip a chunk of fiberglass right out trying to get it off. I would use it on a piece off star board that was screwed down already but never on the actual boat body.

Great advice as always. One change I'd suggest would be to use plastic tape on both sides of the pencil lines and on the outside of the starboard. I've done Epoxy pours and to my amazement epoxy does not adhere to plastic tape of plastic drop clothes.

Why can't you use the same design for both the battery hold down and the gas tank? All you would need is some strap webbing and two buckles.

Nothing sticks to king starboard bro not even methacrylate sorry but I dont think thatll last. You could use expanded pvc sheets instead but that material doesnt have the UV resist properties that starboard does. Hmmm Boat building is FUN!

That's the trouble lol, I'm still testing this system out, but I did do this on a boat about 4 years ago and stuck the starboard down with this stuff to a gunwale to use as a backing plate to screw something else into it and make a box. That has held for 4 years now, so it is looking to be promising! As soon as the bond fails on that other boat, I'll know more of how long it will last, but maybe it doesn't fail?

I haven't found anything that glues starboard. I have tried Epoxy's, 5200 and Double sided tape. I've tried scuffing the surface 1st too. If this works it will be a first.

I did this on a boat about 4 years ago, scuffed the starboard, scuffed the gunwale, and used this to adhere it. Used it as a backing plate to screw something else into it to make a box. It's held solid since then, so we'll see, seems to hold up! Again that was on a gunwale so it's taking some flexing and it's made it 4 years now!

I'm afraid that epoxy/glue wont hold for long. I would be curious if 3M double sided tape (Command Adhesive) would work. I use it to hang things on plastic veneer on cabinets at work and on the vinyl dash of my truck.

I was once told that a battery needs to be mounted vertically with the transom so that the plates in the battery do not hit each other and short out. Is this still true?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 6 ай бұрын
Um, well, I guess, theoretically, sure, that could be true. When you think about how a battery is built, there are plates inside of it, that are physically separated from each other, and in a marine battery, they are beefed up even more internally to be able to withstand the pounding that they take on a boat going through the water. So, over time, I guess the insides of the batteries could wear out and short out and kill itself, but, that is going to take a lot of time, and a lot of abuse for that to happen, usually the battery will be depleted and fail before it shorts itself out internally. :/ Maybe a long time ago with a cheap battery :)
