I'm a maritime engineer, and I need these on my toolboxes badly. The amount of my tools that have ended up at the bottom of the ocean and Mississippi River thanks to a deckhand that decided to risk it is extremely upsetting lol

Yeah... It's best not to let people get used to expecting access to your tools, because then they will tend to think of it as their's when they want - but won't think about returning them when they're done. I'm thinking of my locker at uni. And how when I temporarily replaced the lock with an improvised rivet so that people from the other cohorts could not take my tools while they thought I would be away (and claim I'd given 'someone' a key to 'let' them ...), I returned from break to find that they'd mangled the face of the door trying to pull the rivet out, *then* [they] pulled the bank of lockers apart, replacing the partitions with removable ones, repainting them (with an amazingly natural looking rust/patina on top) And in the process fixed the false bottom that I'd previously used to hide consumables. The fresh divots in the cinderblock wall are what should have aroused my suspicion, but I honestly didn't notice that until the staff (I'd asked to inventory my locker in-case of unexpected contraband) pointed it out to me, more than a few times... All of my attention was focused on the mangled door, and sudden lack of _any_ of the too familiar dents, welding defects, and splotchy peeling paint that annoyed me every-time I had to see that bank of lockers. Ofc. I didn't find _my_ tools on unsealing _my_ locker; I never figured out whose _mostly empty_ toolboxes were inside ...

Always been willing to loan tools, but I'm getting ever more hesitant, as I've slowly built an expensive list of what has never been returned. It's especially frustrating, given how forgetful my extremely busy schedule makes me. I won't realize something is missing until a sometimes year later when I need it. And at that point, I've long forgotten who borrowed it. Queue the random calls/messages to everybody I know, to no avail because nobody claims to have borrowed it.
