Robots are not much threat to jobs. To understand why you need to understand the difference between a "job" and a "task". The difference is that a "job" has a scope of action and purpose, and a "task" has a very narrow scope. Consider the example of trucking. Driving a truck is a TASK; being a Trucker, is a JOB. To be sure, Truck Driving is the most prominent task of a Trucker, but hardly the only job that defines the job of being a trucker. The Trucker is ALSO, performing refueling, preventative maintenance, mid-journey repairs, inventory and compliance, loading and unloading, navigation and problem solving, and security for both the truck and the cargo. You could turn the truck into a self-driving truck-bot, but all those other tasks still need to be performed, and in fact since the truck-bot is much more complex some of them have become larger and more difficult than they were originally. That means it is not necessarily a cheaper and more efficient approach to automate trucking if you are just trading in cheap conventional trucks for expensive and sophisticated truck-bots and trading in low skill and therefore inexpensive truckers for higher skilled truckers who can debug and maintain truck-bots. No, the only way that makes sense is if your higher-skilled more expensive truckers are fewer in number... Which means truckers won't be disappearing as a job.... there will simply be fewer of them PER TRUCK, but not PER NATION. Trucks will move in convoys and fleets with one trucker per convoy handling all of the complex tasks that require on-sight human versatility for the entire convoy. This will lead to savings even though that trucker will be a highly paid professional. The savings however will be passed on to the consumer causing the cost of trucking to go down and thus the demand to go up, and thus there will be more trucks on the road, than the old pre-automation model could support and thus, more truckers and truck companies supplying that demand leading to more trucking jobs. See? The kind of AI we have now, and the kind of automation we have now is best understood as LABOR_SAVING_DEVICES... but what these things lack is versatility to handle situations outside of their training data. That's going to remain the quintessential human job advantage for a long long time: versatility in the absence of pre-trained or envisioned scenarios. This means the jobs most resistant to automation are things like: Police Officer, EMT, Nurse, Day Care Attendant, Animal Control Officer, Soldier... These are all jobs that require that the job holder handle situations well outside the anticipated. An EMT might be dealing with a drug overdose one day, a grieving spouse the next day, and a cat stuck up a tree the day after that, and he doesn't know what the next thing is going to be until minutes or seconds before he arrives. You could totally make a special purpose robot to do any one of those tasks better than a human, if you knew ahead of time that you would need that robot, but you don't and can't know ahead of time... which means that the entity doing those tasks needs to be a generalist who can adapt and think on the fly. AI and robots aren't very good at that yet.

It still doesn't have proper hands. I see claw hands. I don't think that's practical. I don't get Boston Dynamics. They certainly can make hands, but they don't.
@WieseTechnology

The question is what the hands are needed for. The OpenAi and Tesla robot can for sure engage in very delicate tasks with their fingers. As Boston Dynamics said this robot will be used in the automotive industry for now, so it's probably not necessary for it to have these dynamics fingers. We'll see how further models will look like

It is not only that - if you compare that with the Tesla Optimus and 1X NEO - BOTH have hands, Tesla has demonstrated they have pressure sensors. Both are also price optimized - Tesla (which has production facilities it can use) is supposed t obe 20.000 USD, the 1X NEO targets a price of 8000 USD. I fail to see how the new Atlas comes into even a close competitive game here unless they had a LOT more AI hidden away than they have, which is quite surreal given the tremendous farms of AI servers Tesla and OpenAI (behind 1X) operate. So, they have no hands, are likely too expensive and lack the AI - I fail to see them being close to first. It is good the retired the old Atlas - it was a dead end with hydraulics and really only suitable for their niche - but that is not the same now as having a competitive product.
