Why is everyone talking about bottlenecking again?? With so many high end parts you would think bottlenecking is dead… but that’s NOT true!

Hey Phil and Nick - these skits are an awesome representation of the pipeline. I've never thought of how you could relate the work back to people in this way. Feels like it captures the pipeline and is very easy to understand. Great job!

Still entirely wrong. A bottleneck is not simply the slowest part of a system - **every** system has (N-1) bottlenecks, always, if that is the defintion. A bottleneck is when the .e.g GPU *chokes* and runs _more slowly_ than it would if the slow component wasn't as mismatched. Not just can't do as much work. But chokes and loses *relative* performance compared to a different setting/match-up. It comes from the fact that a wine bottle, when you pour it out "fast", glugs and makes the total flow **_less_** that by using a shallower angle (where air can get in, and thus no glugging).

I would like to discuss how games nowadays bottleneck your components when they are terribly optimized. When you see that your i7 at 10% and your gpu is at 40% makes me wanna cry man
@xrafter
@xrafter 2 ай бұрын
Maybe they are optimized for power saving instead of performance. Or maybe Windows is limiting the power usage when extra power is not needed. They are many possibilities other than the game. Like engine limitations, developers limited your hardware to protect it from unwanted bugs that appear at high framerate like gta 5. Although I think framerate oriented games are getting old but I don't know anything about the game dev industry if that was actually the case.
@ultragtman1563
@ultragtman1563 2 ай бұрын
@@xrafter Oh you are really hitting my interests friend. Its funny how that works for developers. Fixed framerates in games are tied to so many things. Just like gta v back then on the PC port if you hit any framerate above 30 fps the barrier arms for Solomon richards won't move up they stay stuck until you limit your fps to 30. They fixed this bug which occurred again in the Xbox series x upgrade the barrier arms were still stuck and wouln't move until you used the Fidelity graphcis mode. It's so funny there are so many subliminal messages that game performance is limited by engine capabilities. I play red dead 2 and gta iv still and religious cap my framerate. The thing is i love capping my frames to 30 if you do it right with vsync or triple buffer or even the riva tuner frame limiter man does the games look amazing. And sure i have bought into cinematic frame rate bc good motion blur and playing open world games at 4k native 30 is still so great. Just my opinion i use my pc as an ultra performance console. if some games that need to be pushed over 120 ill do it I have a 120hz oled and its great but i do appreciate my open world cinematic graphic optimization that I do

Bottlenecking is one of those terms that all these "Tech Influencers" got a hold of, and thanks to Instagram Shorts & TikTok, have too many people believing that only certain CPU's can be paired with certain GPU's, and if you dare to buy anything but the combinations they recommend, your PC will literally catch on fire the first time you try to game on it. The only time I'm concerned about any kind of bottlenecking is if the CPU and GPU have a significant difference in age.

pretty much I got a 3080 2nd hand for a really good price i knew the owner he only ever gamed on it so it was good but he loves the latest and greatest but at the time i wasnt ready to do a full rebuild of pc but some of the new titles maxed out the cpu then and the gpu was only at 40 to 50%. CPU was a 6700k great cpu but 3080 was a little more advanced for it.

(In A Nutshell) The CPU handles the mechanics of the game and outputs raw visual data to the GPU, then the GPU turns that raw data into the 3D (and Ray Traced when appropriate) Rendered Visuals for the game. Your Top Frame rate us ultimately limited by your GPU, UNLESS your CPU isn't powerful enough and causes your GPU to Wait for more data to Render, THEN its the CPU that limits your frame rate. This is most commonly referred to as a "Bottleneck". For Maximum Frame rate its better to have more CPU than you need, so that the GPU is doing all it can and never waiting. The requirements for the CPU vs. GPU ratio is going to vary game per game, and at different times during the game, this is why your frame rate varies throughout the game when your not locked to a lower frame rate, so a "Balanced" system is pretty much a myth except in rare occasions. If you want max frame rate make sure you have enough CPU to feed your GPU at all times.
