Welcome to Episode 14 of Skelly's Garage!
This week, I'm clearing more of the engine viability checklist on the M54B30 I got for free to make my unicorn manual transmission 2006 BMW X5 3.0 back into the excellent daily driver that it was for so many years.
To do that, we finish stripping the block, take out the crankshaft, and do some thorough inspections of the rod and main bearings as well as the crankshaft journals themselves.
We’ve got a lot of pleasant and unexpected surprises - but this is Skelly’s Garage after all, so something will inevitably go wrong.

@507MPower you mentioned the tensioner mod last time. Were you talking about the S54 oil pump chain tensioner retrofit? I was going to put in the S54 tensioner for the primary timing chain, but just learned of this oil pump chain mod.

@@skellysgarage Yes, but alternatively you can use a VW/Audi part (06A115130B). You need an m7x1.0 tap for the bolt that’s built into it. Drill and tap one hole for the said bolt, then a second hole for the spring that provides the tension. I decided to go for an upgraded pump since I really suck at drilling. The easiest way, however, is the way Sreten did it.

Thanks for the info! I’m going to see what I can find. I’m probably going to be rebuilding the oil pump anyway since the new engine didn’t come with one and I need to reuse my X5 unit.

very happy to see the internal surfaces passed muster on the replacement M54! another step towards refurbishment of the grey lady. fwiw, when removing the main bearing caps, if you leave the loosened bolts sitting in the caps you can then use them as handles to break the caps loose from the crank. very convenient.

Yes! This engine is full of surprises, but so far I am happy with what I am seeing. Thanks for the bearing cap tip. That actually clicked for me as the approach on the number 6 (the thrust bearing). Wish I had stopped to think of that before doing finger-oriented HIIT.
