Today, we explore Odawara City, Kanagawa, an area famous for its magnetic castle and production of the Japanese food kamaboko, aka fish paste cakes. After exploring the historical Japanese castle, Shizuka gets suited up to make her own kamaboko (steamed fish paste) and chikuwa (grilled fish paste on a stick).
Along with kamaboko, Odawara is full of super fresh seafood to sample! Shizuka faces one of the most unique foods the byFood team has come across, and she will probably never look at squid quite the same way…

Shizuka's kamaboko and chikuwa shaping skills for a first timer is pretty impressive. I mean just seeing it beside everyone else's, especially her chikuwa. 😆

Fun fact: Before popcorn, or popping corn, was available in Japan, dried squid beaks were like the “popcorn” of Japan. There would be huge pots on street corners, snack shops or even sold outside cinemas, & sold by the bag... but I never had them served grilled/cooked from fresh⁉️

Have no idea if there is a term for it, wasn’t common at all when I was in Japan - But I love how there are a variety of establishments where you select your food items from a shop onsite or nearby & then grill it at your table, either on your own or someone dies it fir you. Have seen various different videos of glamping sites, rooftop restaurants, etc. Alas, having spent several seasons fishing in Alaska, products like Kamaboko and Surimi do not my boat float.
