If games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door are any indicator, if the princess won't have Mario, then there are a ton of other females who'd be all too willing to be his girlfriend and more. Mario doesn't really need her to be honest.

Probably best not to refer to women as "females" if you don't want to sound creepy. You also forget that relationships aren't about "needing" people like they're tools. They're about a mutual and unique bond between two individuals. Sure, Mario could find love elsewhere, but it would always take a different form then it does with Peach.
