I'm personally a HUGE fan of BOTH Madonna & Cyndi Lauper....I love them both and consider them both brilliant and talented. They have their similarities and their own uniqueness. They were both a HUGE force in my childhood, I dont know how I would have made it through my early teens without both of their fan-frickin-tastic music. They both deserve respect for their talent and musical contributions.

Madonna and Cyndi Lauper actually have a lot of respect for one another... Neither is jealous of the other in any way. Please do some research if you disagree. They both appeared at Live Aid together, have taken many photographs together, and have spoken several times at award shows and the like. I once heard someone say that one of them joke they are the "lavergne and shirley of the 1980's"...

Cyndi has been all about authenticity. That's her strong belief in the performing arts. Everytime I watch her interviews, all i hear is wisdom with a sprinkle of humor. Her views on women Empowerment may be extreme, but a lot of issues with gender inequalities have been addressed and are now even made into laws. This interviews happened at the time when it still wasn't. While we adore Cyndi or whoever artist, it makes complete sense that we also have to screen the beliefs they try to influence us with. After all we are still are own beings with own rights and choices.

I remembered during the 80's when a respected magazine compared Cindy Lauper to Madonna, both were starting in the business. It predicted Madonna's career will be gone in the next 6 months and Cindy will go a long long way. The magazine was wrong with the prediction. Madonna became the biggest selling artist of all time.
@lizelorta82543 жыл бұрын
Then? Does it make her a great artist? Lest a singer? Have you seen the katest news who has been reaping awards here and there, i meant competetive awards (not the honorary stuff)... Who's almost done with the coveted EGOT... The songwriter award, the NY best selling books, quality relationships she had and have among other well respected icons and legends in the biz (miles davis, Prince... List goes on) and even relationships she built in her personal life (25 years and counting with her ONE and ONLY husband) oh my God and the list of effin QUALITY over COMMERCIAL success Cyndi has, is waaayy beyond the records and concert tickets sold by who?

Cyndi was part of a band called "blue angel" and if you know anything she wasn't dressed in corsets either. as Madonna has said the Madonna/Lauper look came right about the same time, because it was what it was trendy. Lauper did not have the crazy hair or the outfits in 1979.

I think she was, and still is, a significant artist. Btw, she came "after" Madonna, not before. Madonna dropped officially around late 1982 with her first song "Everybody". Cindy came along in late 1983 with "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

Boy Doll What about Cyndi's band Blue Angel, who had a record out in 1980?
@Charmedone98059 жыл бұрын
Boy Doll true But Madonna didn't get her first BIG hit until Holiday which charted in 1983 around the same time Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was released
@shanesmith81559 жыл бұрын
Charmedone9805 So are you agreeing then? Everybody wasn't a big hit, only on the Dance chart in the US in 1982. But was successful enough for an album to be green lit for her (she was on a two single deal only at the time). Girls Just Want To Have Fun came later, but Blue Angel although their album "went lead" as Cyndi has said, the band were well known in New York, where they gigged constantly. Madonna had probably heard of them before she was famous. So maybe Madonna became more widely famous before Cyndi, but Cyndi had been working in the music business longer, and already had some moderate success, before Madonna. Anyway, I like them both. I feel sorry for Cyndi that she's always been compared to Madonna. Madonna was a phenomonen really. It's not fair to compare her to anyone in terms of success. They are really totally different artists with different styles and approaches. Madonna wanted to be a huge star, Cyndi has said she couldn't handle that level of fame, and that it'd stump her creativity. That may be an excuse for apparent failure, but she wasn't really. Everyone's a failure compared to Madonna, even Madonna (eg. American Life was considered a failure even though it went to #1 in 14 countries, it was a failure for HER). Cyndi has had alot of ups and downs in her career and some bad luck and also suffered from lack of promotion from Sony. Madonna never had that problem! Warners promoted her to extreme levels! It comes down to the music in the end, not how well it charted. Less people "get" Cyndi I guess. Although I think she'd be the nicer person. Who knows? I've also heard she's rude to her employees. Madonna's quite happy to call hersled a bitch or "Queen" and is very competitive. She lacks humour though, something that can't be said of Cyndi. That gives her an edge, for me. She tells bad jokes, and knows they are! I don't think they've ever been great fans of one another, but i think there's some mutual respect there. Neither have either really spoken out against the other. The point is in a way Madonna came first to the masses with Holiday being a big hit. But Cyndi was actually around before Madonna and had an album with Blue Angel in 1980, so as a signed artist, she beats Madonna by two years! It depends on how you put it.
@69HYNA8 жыл бұрын
+Shane Smith i hope you don't find this rude or anything and if you do I'm sorry,cyndi has said ALOT of nice things about madonna and from what i have heard madonna was quite rude and nasty to her BUT then back in 2009 or 2008 she said that she would like to collab with her but never did? i don't know but i have respect for madonna but i think she's a total bitch for being mean to cyndi but if she didn't be mean to her then im sorry
@69HYNA8 жыл бұрын
+Shane Smith CYndi did come before madonna (In the late 70's) but wasn't that big of a hit until she was with the band blue angel which didn't get signed and im was so upset about it.she had and still has a voice even when she was younger which suprised me that she never got signed. so when her band didn't go anywhere her boyfriend dave signed her to his record label and suggested she became a solo artist which was in 1983 and it progressed so long so yeah i agree with you when you said that cyndi was around longer than madonna. now im not a fan of madonna ( please don't hate me) so i don't know what happened around that time because i wasn't there but all i know is that someone said that she was very nasty to cyndi and it wasn't right to me.

@DudeSinger I don't think Madonna wasn't thinking about messages in her clothing. Both Madonna and Cyndi are feminists but they see female power in different ways. Cyndi believes in striping away the male influences on women. Madonna wanted to take ownership of those things that men once forsed on women. Cyndi sees the corset as a male pleasure at womans expence. Madonna sees the corset as a tool women could use on men, the mans pleasure on the females terms. Both are iconic talents and unique.

I think that anyone who says that either Cyndi Lauper or Madonna are idiots, are, well, idiots themselves. Of course, they may not know everything, but like us all are entitled to their own opinions. Also, I don't think you'd get as far in this world, as they have, by being a fool. Talent is one thing, but it isn't enough. Plenty of talented people have careers that go nowhere. It's not just luck, either. Hard work and determination may take you there, but then what makes you stay? Both must be rather savvy to have survived in the music industry for so long - this is an industry that chews people up and spits them out on a regular basis. Only the best and the smartest survive. Cyndi had many problems with Sony over the years - with them not promoting her albums and them trying to change her, but she has survived, despite her career faltering, she has stayed true to herself. I don't agree with everything she has to say here, but I defend her right to say it. Feminism is fine, but I think now things have gone a bit far and now men are disadvantaged, and often viewed as an "enemy" - this is so wrong. The effects in schools show girls streaming ahead, whilst boys are failing and falling behind, but there doesn't seem to be much concern for this because they're males! There are few or no male role models for boys, and this is all a concern (or should be more of one). There would be an outcry if this situation were reversed. These sorts of issues, which are real, and are happening now, need to be addressed and acknowledged. Madonna is perhaps more of a "humanist" and I think that this is probably the way to go.
@lizelorta82543 жыл бұрын
Madonna is Humanist??? Like what turned out in Malawi? Humanist in a sense that many colleagues in the industry do not respect her behind her back? Humanist that she sold high rocketing concert tickets and sing in lipsynch? The way people (even her crew) she worked with told numerous stories of her giving them the diva attitude that they feared of losing their jobs.... And all the hard facts real people in the biz and behind her huuuugeee success reveal. I don't get that humanist aporoach you were saying. Probably Carl Rogers reinvented Humanistic approach.

disafree she's quite liked but she's seen as a nostalgic act, the woman is talented but more so as a vocalist than a producer. where Madonna is the opposite. Madonna had less of a range but produced records that not only became sellers but became part of pop culture history, Madonna took risks it's not like she was Mariah Carey doing the same old tired safe love song or song about dead relatives over and over.

@jimmy82869 ...Cyndi Lauper is obviously not putting down Madonna, it's just a bunch of bored individuals trying to create a rivalry that's not there. How sad. Why has manufactured, contrived drama now become an entertainment standard? It's as if people are bothered that Cyndi Lauper actually respects Madonna. I'm glad that Cyndi Lauper doesn't play into that kind of mindlessness by furnishing the hatred and instead forces those who desire hate amongst each other to have to lie about it.
@TarantulaCandy11 жыл бұрын
A) Cyndi's biggest hits are either covers or reworking someone else's work. I personally think she's a very intelligent woman, an amazing vocalist but somehow it just didn't translate into great albums, lots of fillers in her albums songs that sound like her former band before she went solo and she was a pop artist, cause let's face it Cyndi was deep but she wasn't Tori Amos either. she just didn't want it bad enough,didn't work as hard as she could. this proves that talent alone is not enough
@dana.15462 жыл бұрын
"Change Of Heart", "True Colors", "Time After Time", "She Bop" I can name a lot of Cyndi's hits as a lot of people do and none of them are covers. And I can name a lot of Madonna's hits as well "Holiday", "Into The Groove", "La Isla Bonita" "Like A Prayer" etc. Both these women changed the face of 80's music. But I can't name a single Tori Amos song. Hell, she wasn't even in the picture in the 80's. Talk about comparing apples and oranges. Madonna & Cyndi Lauper's first albums may haven't been that great (all 1st albums have their flaws), but in their 2nd and 3rd albums there aren't any fillers in there, are you kidding ?! "True Colors" and "True Blue" are 100% hits and good songs, no fillers there. Neither in "Like A Virgin" or "A Night To Remember". Then things started to change, I must admit. They both kinda got a little bit lazy, and quality suffered a bit then in the early 90's but there aren't any fillers in their 1986-1989 albums. With "She's So Unusual" Cyndi Lauper sold 16 millions albums worldwide. With "True Blue" Madonna sold 25 millions albums. I never heard of Tori Amos ever reaching those numbers.

What one person regards as quality music another person does not. You may have found much of Lauper's 90s work as lazy but I personally felt that songs dealing with homophobia and abortion pushed many boundaries. Preference for pop songs is subjective as are appeals to emotion i.e. what you regard as deep, it's a matter of taste not a matter of fact so while you think Lauper got lazy I do not. Again all of what you said is just ur opinion.
@MauriceRivers415 Жыл бұрын
I love them both, but Cyndi didn't have the career drive or tenacity. This is why most people remember her only for "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", Time After Time", "All Through The Night" and "True Colors", and nothing else. Career-wise, she was finished by 1989 because her third album was trash.

Madonna was wearing what she was wearing WAY before cindy became popular, and even Cindy and Madonna's style are DIFFERENT in the 80s. like it's been mentioned here Cindy rebelled against male influence, Madonna used what men liked and instead of being slaved by it, she used to against men. 2 different approaches. Madonna became more popular because she actually kept getting better with each album, Cindy kinda stalled after her first record. though Vocally speaking Cindy is more gifted.
