The dissociative amnesia can be really unsettling, because you begin to think that you can’t trust your memories. Like if someone is hit by a car by near where I park my car, I legitimately wonder if I hit them. That’s not rational thinking, and I know that, but I might even begin to remember hitting something getting out of the car and not seeing anything in the road. That memory might have been of hitting a pothole there or even somewhere else at another time but, because of that, I will go check my car for damage. Not finding any, I will go find out who got hit and by who, and I’ll find out it happened on a weekend when I wasn’t there and the person who hit them had turned themselves in.

I relate to this so much . Before I knew I had bpd , or had even heard of it before, I would describe my past as "like a book I read or movie I watched", like its familiar but not mine and I have pretty much no memory of my childhood at all. I moved alot , every school grade year, and even once to another country. And yet I don't remember the process of actually moving once. I don't remember any first day anywhere, having been aware of a recent or upcoming move , what my bedroom or home looked like, my friends, teachers, school, even what my parents were like. It's Ben so hard trying to heal from a childhood I have literally no memory of. Also , Idk if it's bpd related but can I NOT drink alcohol. I will black out every single time without fail, become a totally different person , and do scary, dangerous, totally out of character things.. im lucky to be alive honeslty

That's actually a great descriptor, I've always felt like the perfect description was on the tip of my tongue and, thanks for providin' it, LOL, I'll forget again but it is a lot like an old childhood favourite book. I don't remember much but that story and was enmeshed enough to have an imprint and inevitably that imprint gets triggered with no fuckin' idea why. We're the jigsaw puzzles that get tables flipped when the cat stole that certain piece ya need. 😹😹

This information is really helping me, thank you to those youtubers like you who are keeping people informed. I was recently diagnosed with BPD and im 22 now, been staying away from relationships for 4 years to focus on my mental health, one hell of a bumpy road but im getting through it. But it is making me question myself a lot more

I'm unsure if I've dissociated so I'm trying to learn about it from different perspectives. Memory loss definitely sounds familiar. Like I'll be talking with my wife in the kitchen and notice I'm holding a dish cloth and have no idea when I picked it up. Or I'll suddenly find myself in my bedroom when I was hanging out in the living room and not remember going to my room. I never knew why but "dissociation" seems to be a good explanation.

Sometimes I am not even having an episode from BPD but the dissociation such as depersonalization and derealization is still there I would love to know more knowledge about that.

What if you don't know when you are dissociating? I dissociate without knowing and only find out after the fact because I don't remember

Thank you so much Kayla! I disassociate a lot. And it is good to know that grounding techniques don't work on the first try and you need to keep trying to see the results. Hope you are doing good. :)

I don't know if I ever did before, but when I was 10 and my mom passed aeay i started dissociating pretty much all of the time. Espexially at school. I read a lot so everything started being narrated in my head. It would get in the way of things like remembering my lunch number at school and it would hold up the line as a specific example. To ground I do an incense ritual. I know it's not the best, but vaping also grounds me because the air tastes good and then there's a cloud and i can see the impact of my breath.

Most girls with BPD have multiple cats and tatoos. They are also "beautiful, intelligent and breathtakingly tender" - not my words, but I wholely agree.

I dissociate a lot, mostly derealisation - i didn't even know that was what it is until recently, I honestly thought everyone felt like this. I do it badly when it's busy at work - everything feels fuzzy and zoomed in and 'floaty' idk how to explain it.

Is it possible to experience more than one type of dissociation with BPD? I find myself struggling with really bad memory loss & also depersonalization. I've also struggled A LOT with stress-related paranoia.

Holy shit the color thing!! I have partial colo blindness inhave always thought I was crazy explaining to people it is only some colors and some things usually fall. But overall I feel I see colors as they are.. I’ve been living in disassociation for many many years of my life. This might explain some years being less affected than others. First I’ve ever heard of that being something.

It can, if both are accepting of themselves are in/have done therapy and manage their symptoms. I dated someone with BPD, before I was diagnosed. It was exciting, volatile everything I loved and hated at once. It was 6 months of heaven and hell intertwined. One of the best and worse relationships I ever had. I'd date someone with BPD again, particularly if they have some degree of self awareness and healing. Splitting is gonna happen. Big emotions happen. If they can communicate how they feel in relation to a situation - even if its like I'm feeling really fucked up right now, that's more useful than just rage or stonewalling.

I experience that. I don’t recognize myself a lot of the time, I don’t feel like that’s me. I like to add things to my appearance to help me feel more connected. Like hair dye and piercings

it interferes with my work and causes me to make mistakes. It also stops me from making real connections with people when if they are talking I dissociate and I don't connect with them - there are only two reasons.

i want to share my experience from "the other side": unfortunately i've been in a relationship with a person who has BPD, but she never told me about it. I think it would have been correct and ethical to inform be about this condition at the beginning of the relationship. what do you think about it? this leads to another point: i wish she was a quiet, nice and reasonable person like you, but actually she also had clear traits of antisocial personality: no empathy, continuous lying, manipulating, impulsivity, disrespect for other's feelings and the consequences of her actions. even dissociation: behaving like a psycho in a different voice, different way of talking, different body language. i cant describe how painful it was, especially because in the first months of the relationship she pretended she was the most adorable person ever (because she needed me). when i wasn't needed anymore to meet her needs and reach her goals, i saw how she really was, but it was too late, i was already in love with the previous version of her. on top of that, she gaslighted me into thinking that her change was my fault. (the cherry on top of the cake: when we broke up she even had the courage of writing me: "consider the time spent with me as a ray of light in your life". un-fucking-believable.) after many months since we broke up i'm still extremely hurt and confused, probably in a condition of post traumatic stress, and i keep asking myself: is it possible that borderline+antisocial+psychopath+ptsd personalities/simphoms can cohexist in the same person, creating this kind of horrible people who enjoy giving excruciating pain to others and not even feel sorry about it?

@jilewa

I am sorry you went through that but I dont know that this is the appropriate place to vent your anger at someone with BPD. There are people here trying to seek help and courage to deal with mental illness and its not super helpful to hear your anger and derogatory language like 'psycho'. I'm sorry you were treated badly and I hope you and your ex both find support and healing.

@@jilewa i'd like you to understand that i'm talking about borderline disorder + antisocial disorder + psychopath traits all together in the same person (see 2nd paragraph of my comment pls). i know there are many people with BPD who are nice and reasonable people, (i personally know one) like the author of the video, and i have absolutely nothing against them

What you described about her talking in a different voice reminds me of my mother, on the occasions I’ve heard her speak like that it left me trembling. I think that’s what’s called a “mask slip” and it is a characteristic of covert narcissists when they drop the false persona they project to the world. I wish I had a recording of that voice it was so chillingly evil.
