Respect to Sally in opening up so much about her troubles and sorry you had to go through all that. Sure someone has listened and this has helped them more than you'll ever know. Also, Nick is one of the best podcast hosts I've seen. Power of just shutting up and not saying a word, letting the guest tell their story at their own pace and in their own way. Hope to see more of these, really enjoy them 💪

He's not really that good. Only in this podcast is he good and that's because he's not saying anything. Most of the time that he talks in other podcasts, and this one included, he talks about himself as if he was the one being interviewed. The difference between when someone like Joe Rogan does this and when Nick does this is that Joe Rogan has actually led an interesting life and has important things to say. Nick just wants to be important and wants people to hear what he has to say. A good podcast host would ask good questions, and offer interesting insights, and not just use talking time to talk about this one time at bandcamp.

Fuck. At times it was hard to listen to and it’s incredibly hard to fathom what Sally went through. I’m a new dad and I couldn’t imagine the pain I would have caused my daughter had I treated her this way. Thank you for sharing your story and being vulnerable with us Sally. You are an incredibly strong person and the world is a better place because of it. Much love

I have a very similar childhood and learned i could run away from an abusive environment. I too learned to protect myself as a middle child who took the brunt of abuse from 4 until 16 years old. Thankfully Ive been able to forgive my father and he's sought treatment for PTSD from the Vietnam War. School was my safe haven thus I became a teacher and am now trying my first 50k trail race thanks to Sally. I know much of her story, sadly. Thankful for listening in to this. I haven't often thought about those early years. Love ya Sally.

I’m an injured runner and am using my brother’s Nortitrack iFit elliptical, biking, lifting, and swimming to cross train while I can’t run. I listened to this podcast a few months ago and was blown away by Sally’s story. Today I did a follow along Norditrack workout and Sally lead the virtual run along the Jackson Hole half marathon course. Didn’t dawn on me at first who she was and then when I heard her say her name again I thought - wait she’s the one on Nick’s podcast! She’s amazing 😻 and her follow along workout was the next best thing to running and she’s a fantastic virtual coach 👏 you’re a savage, Sally! (in the best way possible)

This was an incredibly inspiring story. I’m starting my journey now to get into ultra running. I’ve run on and off since I was young. I just started couch to 5k and I was walking a lot prior to that to start getting back into the swing of things. I’m battling a lot of different things mentally and physically, I’m hoping that getting back into something I love and taking it to the next level will help me get through all of my obstacles. I’m mentally strong, just life kicks your @ss a lot and I’m ready to fight back. This just helped fuel my fire. You can do anything you put your mind to.

After caring for and losing my husband and mother to cancer, I accidentally turned to endurance riding and Sally, your comment about real pain and suffering is so spot on. It is not to take away from anyone who is in pain and suffering during an event. But the perspective one gets as life goes on and we experience trauma is like a super power. My worst day on the bike pales in comparison to the hell cancer dishes out to all involved.

I first watched your episode with Courtney Dauwalter, who I think is amazing, but Sally's honesty and openness is very humbling. My ultra running journey began during the first lockdown here in the UK (I would have previously described myself as a middle distance triathlete) so have experienced many of the physical and mental challenges of the sport. And it is SO addictive - I'm currently waiting to see if I've got a ballot place in the UTMB CCC. Great work Nick, these are so engaging. Keep them coming!

Sallie !! I totally agree with her point about starting out with running. I took up running about 18 months ago. the hardest thing I have done since was in the first few weeks... trying to run around my block. I was gasping for air, my knees were so sore stairs were difficult. I had to listen to music because the sounds of my own panting was demoralizing. in the last 12 months I have run countless trail races, 20 miles, marathons, 50ks, Broken Arrow at elevation, etc. I now can win my age group, and sometimes win outright. but the hardest part of the entire progression was 18 months ago when I first started running. to quit and say "its too hard" would have been sooooo easy. but working through that has changed my life. its true that I had an endurance background, but I had been idle for over a decade....AND following Sallie's Ifit workouts has been amazing.

This episode is a must listen for any person pushing themself in sport of any kind, but really it relatable to enduring the struggles of life. Thank you so much Sally and Nick for sharing your story in this incredible episode. Although I find myself immediatly wanting to comment on the running or mindset of athletes etc.. I want to point out my big takeaway which was made in Sally's last major point: it is not about the medals, or the winning, or the acknowledgment.. the joy comes out of the daily struggle, the hard times, and the tiny personal improvements that go unrecognized by anybody but yourself.. When were all looking back on our own story, its not the medals we will cherish, its the journey.. This hit me profoundly. Not because its the first time I ever heard these words spoken, but because in the context of your story these words ring truer. I relate running and personal challenges to real life challenges and struggles.. to learn to run and to learn to enjoy it helps train me for my approach to everyday life.. Its stories like this that help remind me that although things are hard right now (and they are), embrace it, sit in it, conquer it, and overcome. Seriously thank you both, I needed to hear this today. I might go do one more!
