@@histman3133 You don’t mention which translation you’re using, but I recommend Robert Fagles. The introductions, by the late Bernard Knox, are superb - they encapsulate a lifetime of profound scholarship. If you don’t own Fagles, you may be able to find his translations in your local library, or get them in paperback. You might also want to check out “The Sea Peoples” by N. K. Sandars. Her thesis is that “The Dorians” and “The Hyksos” were much the same people, and that their ravages of various coastlines were the historical basis for the Homeric poems far later. Also read “Shame and Necessity” by Bernard Williams, a study of Homer and Sophocles, which postulates that the Greeks had a “responsibility culture” and that “now that we are in a post-Christian condition” we would be well to go back to our origins from a thousand years BC to find a way out of our moral dilemmas. Good hunting!

The lone crazed avenger whose best buddy gets it so he goes out for the final showdown, and the lovable scoundrel who outwits his foes and goes back home to the girl he left behind him. Just about every movie you can name takes something from Homer. If you’re a Joe Campbell fan Homer is your meat. And I’m amazed that poor Jordan Peterson hasn’t figured this out. I can see what he means tho, he was a bit robotic almost? I think he wanted to be more genuine, to open up a bit more. I still thought it was solid to keep him bottled up tho

As a Sacramentan, I was thrilled to hear him mention Chris Webber and the Kings at around 38:00. The early 2000s were great times for Sacramento Kings fans. I don't think it will ever be that good for us again.

On the topic of talking and diction , he really has improved just generally speaking , by this interview in 2004 from how he spoke with Oprah in 1996 ! He doesn’t seem to have such a thick accent anymore .

The epic of Troy is all about a man, Achillius who fight to change the logos. It is all about man's moral decision as an individual not a master or slave

miss charlie...we need this type of conversation in America desperately...to sit and talk with dignity. lets keep it real here...pitt cant act well at this level...hes a star, got it, but please, he is no peter o toole or in the same arena as these actors...high drama is not his forte in this genre, but Kalifornia & Fight Club he was great!
