I've been curious to see exactly what surfboard channels do for a surfboard so I visited my friend Ryan Harris. He has shaped boards for over 21 years and can help me understand these surfboards.

Channels only work when it’s glassy and you rip. For everyone else it’s an added feature to help your shaper get a new sprinter van.

depends on the type of channel IMO.

Disagree. You don’t need to rip to feel benefit of channel bottoms. Anyone riding a twin fin with channels will immediately notice the extra grip it has. Sort of like having an extra fin but without the drag.

actually, the purpose of channels to make the life of a sander miserable.

The edge creates friction, which creates aerated water, giving the back of your board more buoyancy, also vectoring the water out from the tail giving more drive.
