My Daddy used to sit and listen to this song and eventually learned to play it on his acoustic guitar when my Mom divorced him and married another man. I was only about 7 years old, and didn't understand he was grieving the loss of his marriage and his family. Looking back as an adult, I know how heartbroken he was. Such a sad beautiful song.

In 1984 when I was 16, my best friend was a another girl named Angie. She was 16, waist long blonde hair and tall as the summer was long. We did everything together, where 1 was found the other would be too. One day, she just disappeared without a trace. Weeks rolled by they could not find her. The 45 of this song was in constant play on my stereo as I cried and prayed they'd find her. Months passed and I got a phone call - it was her! She said "Baby - it's me! I'll be coming home soon." and then she hung up. They traced her to California, long way from Omaha, NE. She'd been taken by an Afghan guy. She was never seen or heard from again. That was 36 years ago. I still think of her, I still miss her and still song still brings tears to my eyes.

Actually, Keith Richard's wrote the song. here is an excerpt from his auto biography "Anita was down the road having our daughter, Angela. Once I came out of the usual trauma, I had a guitar with me and I wrote 'Angie' in an afternoon, sitting in bed, because I could finally move my fingers and put them in the right place again, and I didn't feel like I had to s--t the bed or climb the walls or feel manic anymore. Let me second that sentiment. No body, no band ever did a song like Sister Morphine. The highlight of it, in addition to Jagger’s dramatic singing performance, is the unparalleled slide guitar of Ry Cooder. Just haunting! And Dead Flowers is a outpouring of disdainful bitterness that only Dylan has ever come close to. I love it.

Lex has a third eye for this stuff. She's a musical shape-shifter of the highest order. She can tap into any song and mine out nuggets of gold that many of us would never ourselves otherwise notice. It seems too, that she does this by simply feeling the song with the whole of her being. And she does it like it's nothing. Watching her work in a different dimension right before your eyes is one of the very best things KZfaq has to offer.

couldn't agree more. The band is still doin it after decades. It seems to me its important for someone who approaches a huge catalogue of songs like this to be aware of the year historically it came out. At the time it was rumored that the song is about "Angela Barnett", David Bowie's first wife when they were splitting up. This song is just crafted magnificently in its simplicity and Mick Jagger's vocal performance is epic, you live the sadness of a break-up when listening to this song, like you are there, so convincing is the way Jagger tells the story. This is not true though. On his autobiography Keith says the song was about his daughter Angela, but at the time he didn't want to admit it because he's "not the type to be writing about my babies and shit".

Actually in Keith Richards autobiography in 2010 he said he wrote the song after getting drug addiction treatment in 1972. He said it wasn’t named after anyone or about anyone in particular His daughter Angela had not yet been born (although her birth was imminent) but he didn’t know the sex of the child until she was born.

When I was a child I thought that if they really loved each other it wouldn't have mattered that they had no money in their coats, but once I grew up I understood that sometimes my grandmother's saying "Quan ke mancia la minestra, l'amor al va fora da la fenestra" (when you don't have soup, love goes out the window) is true... Poverty can certainly take a toll on a relationship. When you have money problem you start arguing, and stress keeps you from appreciating what you have -- each other -- and make wrong choices, which then compound the problem. It doesn't have to be this way, but it's an all too common thing.

I was watching Euronews channel yesterday and the Stones had just sold out the national stadium in Madrid and then headed to a sold out show in Paris next.In his 70's and still selling out stadiums folks, not bars or cow towns. I am not sure the world will ever see this again....great review.

going through a divorce at the moment.. this song is hitting harder than it ever did. Much of it comes from how hard Mick sells the emotion in the vocals. A stunner although I never dug the string section on this one.

I’ve always read so much into this haunting song, I just see a couple who has struggled together and tried so hard but they’re not making it, they’re hungry, they’ve had big set backs, he loves her and is feeling like a loser cause he can’t support her, he knows she deserves better and probably wants her to go on home to her parents so she’ll be safe, and they can’t say they never tried.

Keith Richard wrote the song for his daughter, who Anita & he had called Dandelion. It was Keith's mother who brought the little girl up as she said they weren't capable of looking after her with their drug addictions, Keith's mother renamed her Angie, but they kept their eldest child Marlon.
