Legend goes that this song started out as a two minute intro to the Rain Song but morphed into its own musical piece. They just felt something and went for it. It was pretty organic and spontaneous compared to most other song writing approaches. The song does precede the rain song on the album and still sort of serves as an intro to it.

I think the best time to be born for the greatest music was between 1950 and 1965. I was born in 64 and I have three older brothers and two older sisters. I got the benefit of all the Motown and all the greatest rock ‘n’ roll. I know as a baby when my sisters would be watching me they would be listening to all the old Motown songs because I remember them.

The lyrics are based on Robert Plant's belief that music is universal. He told NME in 1973: "Every time I sing that, I just picture the fact that I've been round and round the world, and at the root of it all there's a common denominator for everybody. The common denominator is what makes it good or bad, whether it's a Led Zeppelin or an Alice Cooper."

Time has been kind to this album, whose main problem when it arrived in 1973 is we had been waiting for the follow up to their perfect 4th album and everyone was a little disappointed at first but you soon realized these guys were not going to repeat themselves and came up with another great album in its own right. Try the Ocean either from it or Live, it is another banger from the masters of rock. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Bob --- Dread Zeppelin is, or was a phenominal band. I've seen them play live four different times and each time a slightly new line up. They went through a couple of drummers and other members throughout the years. A couple that stood out were, obviously Tortelvis and his stagehand Charlie Haas, Charlie gave Tortelvis clean dry towels and his cape ( Ala Elvis and James Brown) and he would help Tortelvis get untangled from his microphone cord. There was drummer Fresh Cheese n Cheese, Bass player Jah Paul Jones, to name a couple. I have two of their CDs. Always fun listening and to have people who have never heard them but who are Zeppelin, Elvis, fans plus Reggae fans.

At the time this song was recorded a company called Roland took an effect called "chorus" and created a version that was used in many recordings like this. It's what you hear bending the pitch on Robert Plant's vocals and giving it a bit of that "swisshy" sound. On top of that, as mentioned earlier by Kitchener, they used VeriSpeed to change the speed of the recording giving it more brightness. Probably one of their best albums ever and you just can't go wrong with Led Zeppelin. They were always at the top of their game.

Jimmy used an electric 12-string guitar on this track. This gives its signature ring-y sound and tone. The origins behind this song is that there’s a common denominator in the world - in that it’s peoples are the same no matter where you go. They traveled a lot in the early seventies and their experiences led them to believe just that: after the initial confrontation of wanting to hang out and experience a differing culture and the walls are let down and you’re invited in, Robert and Jimmy found that the other side ends up enjoying much the same things in life as you do. Peace, prosperity, family first and good food/drink and MUSIC.

Pagey was so good at making a Telecaster _not_ sound like a typical Telecaster, such as this track and on their first album (throw the studio Stairway solo in, too). When I think of a classic Tele sound, I think of someone such as the amazing Don Rich. Or in a rock setting, the sounds that the early Black Crowes got out of a Telecaster. With Jimmy, it always sounded dramatically different.

Page and JPJ were wizards in the studio… as the technology advanced, they used found and used it all… The crazy dream was Led Zeppelin and no matter where they perform, California, Calcutta, Honolulu.. the song remains the same…

Now that you guys have listened to a bunch of Zep, you should try the band Dread Zeppelin, which interprets their songs in the reggea style, with an Elvis impersonator for a singer. Their first two albums are spectacular.

I know that Page had this collage of guitar parts for an instrumental in mind and then Plant added lyrics and it changed into this Arena rock powerhouse for Led Zeppelin throughout their career.

Ohhh.....I'm kinda' sad though, because I thought it might be from their 'live' film. From THAT film....I'd recommend 'Dazed & Confused'.

Jimmy Page was the master of intricately layering guitar parts over one another. Truly in a league of his own at that time.
