If you've ever wondered what happened to the short lived Adult Swim cartoon The Oblongs, then I may have an answer. Let's talk about the odd history behind the show and it's creator, Angus Oblong.
Thank you so much for 250K views on my Pinocchio trailer video! I'm gonna be uploading some more light reaction videos soon!

When you look at it from Angus Oblong's perspective, this show is actually pretty tragic. Executive meddling turned it from Gothic and grim to more typical family sitcom, and while the end product was nothing terrible, it wasn't good enough to last more than 13 episodes. So now Oblong's works are just entirely forgotten.
@BradleySmithYoutube

8 episodes according to where they cancelled it! And yeah, maybe if they had made a Creepy Susie show and had it be more of a parody of traditional sitcom format, the show could have worked.

I think the WB mismanaged their original animated shows in general. Mission Hill, Baby Blues, and Oblongs were all pretty decent shows but they weren't marketed well, scheduled consistently, and in the case of Baby Blues and Oblongs, grossly butchered the source material. The end result was still enjoyable but when you see what the original content really was, it's quite obvious it was an "executive" board not getting it and wanting to make the shows like every other adult animated show at the time.

To be fair a lot of creators without restrictions tend to put out works that don't really work for anybody but them, look at George Lucas. Meanwhile I can show anyone I know the Oblongs and they will enjoy it because he had a bit of a push and pull thing going so his style shone through while still making the show relatable and fun to a large amount of people. While I do think there is a place for a creators raw pure creation I've noticed most great things come from working around restrictions

Untapped potential is dead on. The oblongs always stood out to me as being exceptional. I really resonated with his “have vs have nots” depictions. I honestly feel that this type of content is routinely rejected by media giants out of fear that it could stoke resentment. Maybe not with this show in particular, but on a trend as a whole. You also now have me tempted to go meet him. With Boondocks reboot getting canceled by HBOMax, this would def be a nice alternative…. But something tells me HBO is not going to end up being the friend we thought it would. :/

HBO canceled Infinity Train, they are concerned about numbers and the bottom line, not cult classics. Same goes for Netflix. I think maybe - _maybe_ - Hulu would be the choice for niche entertainment since they had Futurama rebooted, and continue on with Solar Opposites and Always Sunny.

The Oblongs is definitely one of my all-time favorites and I agree, it's a pretty underrated gem that got taken too soon, it should've at least had one more season. Hearing you talk about how Adult Swim was reminded me of what it was like when I first saw it. For context I'm 30 and I remember when Adult Swim originally started at midnight and then moved to 11pm. I remember when The Oblongs first debuted on AS and my brother and I fell in love with it immediately even though we didn't get all the jokes at the time. Helga was definitely hilarious and one of the most recognizable and funniest characters from the show, pretty much a female Eric Cartman only not evil lol. But all the characters worked very well and had something memorable about them. I was so sad when I heard that the show was cancelled and especially at how quick it happened I thought the show was pretty good but I can see that it had tough competition with Family Guy and Futurama which were dominating the ratings so it was a tough call for a lot of the shows like this one and Mission at the time (this was back when anime was still playing on weekday nights Monday-Thursday so there weren't many AS specific cartoons yet). Nonetheless, it's nice to see that other people remember and enjoyed this show, it really was underrated and I hardly hear people talk about it.

Also, I think Moral Orel and The Oblongs are similar in that they're both shows with heart, that reject apathy & nihilism despite representing the worst of people, & aren't crass or offensive just to be crass & offensive. I mean, I love Rick & Morty & Superjail, but it's refreshing to see adult cartoons that are entertaining, humorous, and critical & intelligent enough to leave you thinking, but not so nihilistic that they leave you completely depressed at the state of the universe. Although I will admit that Nature left me staring at a wall for a couple hours.

@@willd.4808 YES! Great way of putting it and you’re on the money with the connection. And not every adult show needs to push the envelope with the risqué boundaries. I think the main reason why it wasn't very successful was due to it being an adult cartoon. At the time, adult cartoons were still an experimental phase, and the oblongs weren't adult enough to garner enough attention. (And also because WB was kinda obscure) Maybe if they toned it down to a pg rating and broadcasted to Disney instead, this show would've gotten much more love

All I’m saying is, at a time where we have KZfaq, Netflix, Hulu etc. along with a society there is working towards understanding how differences make us special, if ever there was a time to make a reboot, now is the time. Full creative freedom, any ideas gained from personal growth, and the ideas that can come from this new age. He’s throwing away money at this point.

Damnnn, I seen the little picture of "Chalk Zone" in the background of your video. CRAZZZYY I forgot all about that little Gem of a show I caught a couple of times as a youngin, I grew out of watching Cartoons so I never thought about that show just fading into obscurity, I just stop watching these shoes. I wish more ppl knew about that one and a bunch of other amazing Cartoons from late 90's/early 2000's. Thanks for the channel man

I absolutely love The Oblongs. It’s an under-appreciated gem that’s overlooked by dozens, yet my favorite adult show of all time. This show needs a second chance. However, it’s only relevant to this day for a reason that I really really hate. You know Creepy Susie? Well, she’s attracted a lot of attention in the *ahem* N$FW field. She, along with the entire shown, is primarily only known because of 1ewd art. She’s 10 years old. It’s disgusting, but there’s almost nothing I can do about it. Anyways, your analysis was efficient and informative. I, for one, really hope that “The Oblongs” gets a reboot (as long as they don’t screw it up and Angus Oblong is able to get even more of his ideas across and portrayed in the end).

Oh my… I was unaware that creepy Susie had that kinda of reputation. That’s disgusting, but not shocking since the internet is a disgusting realm of degenerates sometimes. Yuck. Thanks for checking out my video on the show though. Would be incredible to see another season, and yeah, maybe even with more creative control given to Angus.

I know, it's annoying. I don't think those types even care about the show, they're just trying to ride off the recent popularity of the goth fetish (which is why alot of fanart in general will leave out her hunched back and such, because she was specifically designed to not look conveniently pretty) Kinda sad the large part of the popularity of the character isn't because she's well written, but rather her aesthetic fits a popular recent trend It's really contradictory of the entire show's commentary
