I'm taking a deep dive into the lore of Comedy Central's only other cartoon to compete with South Park in terms of pushing the envelope: Drawn Together! Let's figure out how the first animated reality show got cancelled at the height of its popularity.
And with a little help from the creators themselves: Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein. Thanks for the interview, boys~

My favorite Drawn Together trivia is that it is directly responsible for the creation of the (almost) equally raunchy anime "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt". One of the creators of PaSwG, Hiromi Wakabayashi, saw an episode of Drawn Together while at a hotel in America and basically went, "oh shit, you can show stuff like this on TV? Well shit, why don't we do it too once we get back home?"

Ask Italians especially Italian Americans. Any kind of "bippity boppitty" joke about our language or accent are hilarious and you have so much potential if they're also a person from Brooklyn. Family Guy has some weird ones but also has some good ones (like the one about a guy cutting in front of a line of Italians) Sarcasm doesn't work online btw and your reply makes it seem like you intended to be sarcastic? @@sugarskulls2817 Ah, I see, as this reminded me of my recent heritage trip to Mexico, that some Italian immigrants wanted torta in a restaurant, as in Italian, it means cake, but in Mexican Spanish, it refers to a type of sandwich of Mexican origin, as I had to explain to them, on how and why the word is in both languages, but have completely different meanings, associated with both dishes, as both parties found hilarious, when they each caught on, despite the language barrier.

Something you might not be aware of. The Episode with the cousin who has a learning disability is highly likely to be a parody of the sitcom The Facts of Life. In that show, the pretty, popular, rich girl, Blair has a cousin visit with cerebral palsy and Blair is jealous of her for being so likeable.

It really makes me happy that the creators of Drawn Together are aware of it´s fame in latinamerica. As a mexican I really loved the show for how unhiged the dub was making jokes even nastier thanthe original. The Prince Piñata is a good start I would love to see even more latinamerican jokes. Also with how monstruous Disney has become with the MCU and Live action shows scripts could be made for Clara and Captain Hero easily. Same as how the Fletcher inspired products like cuphead or Bendy could give new life to Toot NFTs and current animation would make Spanky´s story fun Or even how normalized anime has become for both Ling Ling and Xander Fun fact Captain Hero and Xander mexican voice actor loved their character till this day while Toot and Wooldor actors are not fond of them making Toot actress which is an 70 old lady go to confess for the amount of vulgarity she had to record.

Personally, if this show were to get a revival, I'd rather it be with a whole new batch of characters this time. It's been years and there's a whole new slew of modern cartoon tropes they could play with. The cal-arts style, the over reliance on meta commentary, the soulless reboots, isekais, the "product of the times", "diversity" quotas (I understand that's a pretty loaded take but I'm just bored with creators justifying their boring cardboard cutout characters with "they're part of a marginalized group". Like, So? They're still boring and 2-dimensional. You haven't given me a reason to care about this character.). Back to Drawn Together, there's just so much potential for a new cast with everything that's come out in recent years. The old cast just wouldn't have that same impact as they did back when the show first came out. Yes, they are iconic, and it would certainly shock a more modern audience (you know the type), but they've all been done before, and they speak more to the time period the show aired in more than they would today. If we want a potential Drawn Together reboot to be good, I'd rather we take the more risky path and create new characters crafted to shock a whole new generation. Plus the old characters are all canonically dead so they'd have to replace them anyways.

@@darkjelly944 just drawn them together again, after all they're drawings. They could still use the movie characters who aré ISRAEL and Poop Monster for new stories (or just the poop monster since the Israel-palestine conflict is recent). The crew is already diverse AF to use with 3 men, 3 women and ling ling. Easily can create live action black Clara MCU Captain Heroine Spanky Ham but is a monkey and so on. The interview already stated also how ling ling get rescued by in the "characters not voiced by their race counterparts" alongside Apu and Missy from Big Mouth. Doing the whole "Pandering is bad for a whole seasons" seems like shooting yourself on the foot with the same joke over and over.

Clara gets "PS" not plastic surgery but photoshop- gets photoshopped to look realistic like the new Disney princesses that share names with all the old ones. She could play on the racism for people who can't stand the race swapping too there's tons of potential

It's funny hearing so many different reasons why this show was cancelled, only to find out that not even the creators know why the show was cancelled. The most common reason I heard was due to it being too expensive to make, and recently, it was cancelled because it was too offensive. Based off the interview, it at least sounds like it was a combination of both factors but more so about comedy central using them as a scapegoat in a way, to keep South Park safe. That would also explain to a degree why they were so bitter about South Park in the majority of the movie.

It's more likely expense vs. viewership. Even though the show was popular and had a consistent audience it also wasn't held by the public to the same standard as south park despite them at times having very similar levels of offensive humor So I think not only did comedy central not support them but the general public didn't either aside from fans. So either way it's reasonable they'd have a sour taste about south park and make the entire movie basically them crying about it (the movies so bad..)

Jess Harnell wasn't the voice actor for Eddy, that was Tony Sampson. Also, the 'Mickey Mouse deleting offensive cartoons' episode was supposed to be aired in season 1, but got pushed back because of Christopher Reeves' death. Just some fun trivia.

Even after that episode came out the show still faced backlash for the similarities to Reeves and his disabilities before his death even after airing late. People were obsessed with him for a bit

I loved Ling-Ling. He had roles in some of the best episodes, including Super Nanny where Ling-Ling had a B-Plot of him trying to learn to drive and pass his Driver's License. And who could forget the episode where Ling-Ling got a Monster Girlfriend, only to be offed by a psycho Cucumber.

Clara's whole octopus arc ended in one of the best punchlines I had ever heard, it basically was just one long dirty joke over a couple of episodes, with perfect delivery, and did it ever hit like a truck. It's the one joke I remember the best.

The world needs this show to come back more than ever. The world needs to be reminded. It's okay to laugh at things that are rude and offensive. And equally that it's okay to be rude and offensive. If you see something that you don't like, it's okay to be offended about it. If someone's route to you it's okay to be rude back. That we can't continue to live in a society. That is nothing but predetermined censored safe flavorless mush That the media is today. Media especially comedies should always leave you thinking. They should always leave you changed whether it be for the better or the worse. Speak up for your right to be offended for your right to challenge things for your right to think. Otherwise the world's doomed. And there ain't No saving it. If we can't remind it to laugh at itself again.

I have the Drawn Together DVD uncensored collection and loved it so much that I even got the that wonderful Movie..... To date I've tried to watch it twice but have never finished it. Fell asleep the first time then flat out ejected it about midway the second time. Oh well I still have and might give it a chance next time but I'm still loving the series

I have a soft spot for this show, it might actually do better today because the firestorm it would cause would make people curious. Tara Strong initially was really excited to work on it because she was so sick of doing kid's shows that voicing Clara and Toot was going to be fun. Though she eventually ended up finding herself offended by certain parts of the script, Anne Frank jokes in particular. The one where they tried to teach Ling Ling how to drive was one of the funniest episodes I remember

The amount of triggering this show would produce if played today would make millions of heads explode at just the thought. I miss when comedy wasn't afraid to be offensive. If malice isn't intended, we should all relax. South Park rule: it's not offensive if the offender takes equal shots at every group. Also, Ling Ling was the single most adorable character ever created by an adult animation show.

i feel like part of what made the show work so well is you could tell they were having a genuinely good time on what they were working on. for the most part it didn't feel phoned-in like, say, brickleberry does. there's genuine effort put into DT and that makes all the difference also the humor isn't JUST offensive, there are a lot of really goofy non-sequitur jokes that utilize the cartoon logic inherent in the setting (or just throw something in completely out of left field)

this show rarely aired in Ireland - In fact a lot of the Adult Swim stuff was rarely on, but my god did i watch the shit out of this when it was!! this was a great throwback video ty :)

I remember discovering Drawn Together because the channel in Australia that aired it was the weird government funded, mostly international and/or weird stuff channel, and Drawn Together was on after Death Note. This was well before anime that wasn’t Pokémon or YuGiOh was even a little bit available so the fact that any channel played any anime was HUGE amongst my fellow loser weebs. This kinda made it like… weirdly obscure (at least in the area I grew up), in a way South Park wasn’t. Coincidentally, it’s also how I discovered the show Stripperella, which aired after Drawn Together season 1 ended lol
