Breelynn was born a healthy baby but was kissed by a person with a cold sore as an infant. Since her immune system was not developed, this infection attacked her brain and left her with a severe traumatic brain injury. Now 8 years old, Breelynn is unable to walk or talk and is not expected to live into adulthood. Breelynn's family wants others to know that there is real danger in kissing a baby, especially on the mouth.

Nothing boils my blood more than ignorant family members who refuse to respect the boundaries you set for your newborn. I have a 5.5 month old and haven't allowed certain family members to see him for a few months after they decided to ignore my requests. This is exactly the reason why parents take precautions. Why is it so difficult for people to accept?

People need to use the ears and listen to when someone says don't kiss the baby, it's usually the cheeky old people who dont listen. I'm sure they very much regret it now. I hope in future we can learn to listen to each other and especially if the parent says don't kiss the baby.

In spite of the ignorance and disrespect (at best), I'm glad you're standing by your baby and their health. Family should be way more considerate (coming from someone w/ a family that tends to cross lines). I'm sure it's quite challenging, but i'm really glad he has you on his team.

When my third child was 3 days old family came from out of town for Thanksgiving (not my choice). Their toddler was sick and they didn’t believe in any medication. They slept on the floor of the nursery (the baby slept in our room in a bassinet. They took one of his brand new stuffed animals (new baby gift) out of the crib and gave it to their sick toddler to cough all over and wipe his snot on. Pure ignorance.

HSV is one issue, but also a lot of adults haven't had a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine in a long time and can pass that too while having few or no symptoms. Very young babies are fragile and really nobody but the parents and pediatrician should be handling them extensively. Once they grow a bit, get a few of their vaccines, and more exposure to the environment it's less of an issue but too many people have boundary issues and a feeling of entitlement about babies. Yeah they're cute, but maybe don't get all up in their faces. And maybe get that TDAP shot updated if you're gonna be around babies...

Same in India.. the mother and baby stays at her parents place after childbirth for 3months sometimes 5 to recuperate (it’s called confinement period) She’s left to rest and bond with the baby in a room, while the family feeds her nutritious food, gives her body massages, herbal baths etc.. and yes, guests and visitors are allowed to only sit at a distance to see the baby.

I'm not a nurse and I've argued with so many people who say that's what immune systems are for. A baby's immune system has to build up first. This is why other countries limit contact with the baby and mother for a whole month, the whole point is to limit risk of infection until the baby's system and bolster some.

Left side is involved in language for most people. About 20% of left handers have language on the right hemisphere. Because language lives in the left hemisphere it has been called the dominant side or the logical. The right hemisphere is involved in spatial perceptual and vision. That’s why it’s called the more creative. That said, what we call logic involves more the frontal lobes both left and right. There’s also the connections between different structures of the brain that give us creativity. Very complex our brains!

@catcat9582 You avoid exposing babies to herpetic lesions, and other viruses for that matter, as they initially lack a competent immune system to deal with what may be a minor pathogen to an older person. You'd be shocked how many people show up to a dentist office with a cold sore, and then are surpised that they can't undergo an aerosol generating surgery that puts the viral particles in the air. Most people do not understand basic germ theory.

@MidnightSociety75 Yup. People are so disappointingly ignorant about it anyway. Thinking that if they don't have a cold sore, it's impossible to carry HSV1 or HSV2. Doctors also don't help because they never advise people to get tested as they already know that the majority of the world population has it and as an adult its not typically life threatening yet, since there is so much stigma they would rather have people live in ignorance so it doesn't affect their mental health

@@MidnightSociety75 Most babies contract herpes simplex encephalitis from the mother via the birth canal, not from a stranger and not through a kiss. Luckily the modern miracle of cesarian section spares the baby contact with germs and viruses that may be present in the mother's birth canal. Exposure to the breast/nipple and consuming human milk poses a risk the baby will contract herpes encephalitis as well. Bottles can be sterilized in the dishwasher, the breast can't. Also commercial formula is pasteurized and breastmilk is not. Even if the risk is small, the sacrifice is small too. You can't be too careful.. Although yes, "they'll be people who won't listen" and mothers will no doubt recklessly continue to kiss her baby, nurse it at her breast and even most dangerous of all -give birth vaginally.

I never could truly connect with an adult or have an older figure I looked up to, and I would constantly be undermined/talked down to. even as a teenager, I faced constant belittling and underestimation from those around me, and it's so wonderful to see this man treat these disabled children as humans equal to him. truly beautiful and inspiring, while also heartbreaking. i wish more people treated me like this as a child. props to the mother, also. she's so patient and understanding of the girls means of communication and expressing herself. she seems so caring and supportive of her daughters disabilities, and not only that, but she's so affectionate and sweet!! more parents need to be able to empathize and communicate with their children like this, regardless of disability.

It was the day before their cold sore erupted so nothing even showed at that point and neither of us realised there was even a risk. I was very ill for three weeks with cold sores in my mouth and throat and all up one side of my face. It nearly went to my eye which could have caused blindness. It was horrendous. @gaetanodragonetti3942 not everyone knows they are going to have an attack. You are contagious before the actual cold sore shows up. If you live with it for 30 years (like I have) you know when a cold sore is coming on, but if you never had one you don't know the signs. I infected a boyfriend with my very first cold sore. I kissed him before the sore showed up. The beginning of a cold sore is itching, tingling, or burning around the lips.48 hours later the blister shows up, then is the eruption stage, then scab forms, and then your healthy.

It’s not about kissing on the mouth. Anywhere on the body can make this happen. And an other fact: you don’t have to see the cold sore. It is already active in the body of the person before you see it so clearly. I have family in law that all have the Herpes virus, first 3 months no kissing at all, with or without active sores: and never on the mouth never ever! With sores I don’t want you around at all before 3 months. Other fact: if you or the dad has the virus and will give it to your newborn, it can become very sick as well, only the change of dying is less likely. After 3 months the baby will not be at that amount of risk anymore. Just be careful ❤ your child is your everything

Jes in turkey and many other asian (balkan) cultures there is a thing with the 40 day rules. Its like an old superstition/habit but maybe also has Religios roots. For example baby and mom shouldnt leave the house for 40 days. Im not completly sure but the first bath for baby should also be at 40 days (with mom). And when someone dies the 7. 40. And 52 days are believed to be special especially the 40. Where a special ceremonie like thing Takes place where prayers are done And so on..

@MELLO_666 This may be religious, but it makes a lot of logical sense scientifically. There's other cultures where they take the bond between a newborn and a mother at the beginning more seriously than here in the US. I wish we would adapt some of these aspects into this our culture.
