So I just got my Sea King model and started watching. I’m a little late to the party as far as colour is concerned, but here is my 10 pence. The HU.5 “Damion” builds as the early 90’s version. This had a grey cockpit as the regular MK5 & Mk6 Sea kings. 771 HU.5’s went through a slow up grade having the sand filter fitted, flood lamps, NVG position lamps, radio upgrades (removal of the Bendick antenna on the nose), fixed rotor tracking camera and the black cockpit. This version of XV666 should have a grey cockpit. The soft sound proofing in the back should be a medium sea grey not blue

Well I thought I’d take my time to post my first KZfaq comment. During my time at Culdrose (1985-1987) I worked on this aircraft. I’m finding this quite surreal. My memory is not what it used to be and it is heavily Mk4 biased as I spent most of my time on those. If I remember correctly the version you are making had both hard (plastic) and soft sound proofing in the cabin and I think it was grey. Behind the pilot is what is known as the broom cupboard. The control that you were struggling to identify is the cyclic. Hope that helps

Hi Nigel Back in the 90's I worked as a aircraft painter and I have a few photos of a sea king HC4 interior which shows the bulkhead to be grey, the rest of the rear cabin had at least 3 other greys, The ceiling panels hard molded plastic? medium grey, soft fabric like side panels a silver grey and the floor dark grey, I would suggest they could vary from a/c to a/c. I do have some paperwork about the specs and will see if I can get some mil spec information regarding interior colours.

Where i live, the nail polish remover, is called "acetone per unghie" (acetone for nails), and this thing remove the paint without damage the plastic , differently from the regular acetone that i use as extra thin fast dry glue, and this thing can damage the plastic , not so hot as cellulose thinner but , is hot.

Hi Nigel, I’ve just had a look at the air fix site and pre-ordered the kit. I noticed that there are several photographs including the interior. These may help. I believe these confirm your suspicions on the colour of the cockpit

Hi Nigel, just some information that you might find useful regarding tha operation of helicopters in the royal navy. The pilot who is flying the the helo sits on the right on the senior officer in command sits on the the left and under normal conditions dors not fly the helo. If my understanding is incorrect I stand to be corrected. All the same great videos as there's always something to learn.

I flew in them a few times in the air cadets, but can’t remember which colours where on the interior. Spent as much time as possible hanging out the side door with SAR. Great vid!

I'm still surprised that it took this long to release a proper 1/48 scale Sea King. I've wanted one since I built the Airfix 1/72 kit. These days, I'm not so interested anymore. I've moved on to bigger scale.

Ask Luke at Airfix he did the research on the Sea King and he's very thorough.

The interior does actually have blue. If you watch the Airfix promo video which had an interview with the designer when they are talking to him he is sat in the back of one. Look closely at the background on the left and you can see the blue. Funnily though 25 is not listed on the needed paints on the store page despite a built up interior being show with it.

Hi Nigel, you certainly have a couple of painting issues to sort out, I would think that if part of the floor is grey, then that part of the bulk head will be the same colour, and the same goes forvthe cockpit floor if it is blavk so that part of the bulk head will be black, good luck for sorting this issue out, the build is looking great, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍

If you can get hold of a copy of Warpaint series No.95 (Charles Straface) there are some nice cockpit shots towards the back. however, nothing to help resolve the grey/black bulkhead issue!

Having looked into the cockpit and rear interior and also having been in the Seaking the front bulkhead is black with black all around and in the rear space, the bulkhead is grey.

Just checked out the Hu5 references and its black cockpit side and grey main cabin side.

I see a trip down to yeovilton coming,maybe? 🤔

For test fitting the interior deck/cockpit, shouldn't you be using the inner shell pieces rather than the main outer fuselage parts? I don't have mine yet - obviously (!!) as it's pre-ordered so I can't see the relationship between cabin floor and walls/inner shell and how they fit into the main fuselage yet! 😉 Anyway, I'm really enjoying seeing your meticulous method of building this so far; loads of useful hints and tips! 😉👍

Hi Nigel, I found a photo of the HU5 at the Yeovilton collection and that shows a view from inside looking forward to the cockpit and you can see the bulkhead is black facing you and is black to the side facing the side door and grey facing back into the cab. Not sure if this was standard, maybe Airfix used this aircraft as their reference ?? Photo is on Flic#r if you look around for it otherwise I will email you a link cheers Chris

Love your videos, Nigel. I have learnt so much from you. As for the colours, when I did the RAF 1/72nd Seaking, it was all grey inside. Maybe the Navy was different.

Tried sending some interior shots from Flickr but KZfaq is not having it. Seems to be grey walls, blue canvas seats and the black is a protective sheets.

The quilting on the inside could well have been blue "its a navy thing"

Note that the inside in stage 73 will be mosty masked by the "inner tube"in stage 81.

No idea about the blacks and greys. Hopefully someone who flew in the type can answer? I'm not sure it matters too much though, haha :)
