While in the pause caused by Remarkable's delivery issues related to its new product, I keep considering why I would want it. It seems beautifully crafted and well executed. Yet, I initially wanted Remarkable to take handwritten notes and to organize them. Perhaps the keyboard, while broadening Remarkable's product line, is a nod to the fact that converting long hand to text does not work very well on any device. So, when handwriting is not the best or most reliable way to record information, being able to quickly shift to type may be a good thing. I will likely give it a try. As to cost, the cost of everything is too high, so when I want something, I say something silly like "life is short."

Thanks for the review. Nice job! What is your sense about Remarkable releasing a third generation of the hardware this year (Remarkable 3)? Seems like their release cycle of every 2-3 years has typical. Appreciate your perspective.

What would be the use case for this, when you can just type with a full keyboard of choice through the remarkable app on PC?

Remarkable is supposed to be a "no distraction" environment. Having to use a pc / tablet separately would eliminate that & at that point, you might as well just buy a regular tablet to type on.

Does it support markdown? I see you can create a title an alt+1 keystroke but can you use the markdown #'s to create a various heading levels?

Obviously you could type markdown syntax, but it doesn’t render things accordingly. I also tried the ## Space trick like in Notion and that doesn’t trigger it either

Thanks for the review. As a piano teacher I would suggest you use a different fingering 😂 on the Remarkable for your backspace which might make it easier to reach. Instead of using your pinky you can use your middle finger.

At this point, why not reach with the left hand over the right? It’s like the keyboard was designed by Rachmaninoff.

I got my type folio earlier this week. While the typing experience is generally nice, I am disappointed with the external surface touch and feel. Feels plasticky and cheap. It definitely feels quite pricey. Planning to return mine but the return link is broken as well.

I don’t think I would use this over my laptop, as a college student most of the time I’m typing it’s for an essay or some sort of class. In which I don’t think it would be worth it to have to transfer stuff too google docs or word then have to submit.

Hey Brandon - do you suffer at all from calibration issues with your ReMarkable? I note you use it as your daily driver? I have tried drawing lines with a ruler and they look like my 3 year old daughter has drawn them freehand....

Sounds like the screen has become magnetized. Try running the side of the stylus up and down the screen to clear it up. I had this early on in my time with the reMarkable and thought I got a bad screen until I learned this trick. If it continues to be a problem, note that the Boox has more line smoothing in their writing algorithm and you might find that you prefer it, but try the de-magnitizing trick first.

After watching your video, and a good job BTW as it was good to listen to you verbally think and process what was going on, I am starting to think the current RM2 is reaching its limit. First is the lag. I have seen this in writing and while I have not typed, I think the hardware is due for an update. I tried the kindle and it was super smooth to write with almost no lag. To me we are maxing what the processor can do for a 2yr old device. Second is apps and eco system. The Remarkable needs to have connectors or something that allows apps or data to flow. Journals, notes, tasks, all this would be good outside of Remarkable. Just my thoughts.

Hey Will. Thanks for reaching out! I don't think you will see reMarkable add apps. It runs counter to their goals with it being a distraction-free device. If you haven't already, check out the Boox it's likely a good fit for what you're looking for.

I keep seeing people say that this is really expensive for what it does and why do you [need] this when it's not what the device is for. Which okay... cool. No one tells Apple their 500 dollar headphones are ridiculous and I've seen other 60% keyboards are just as expensive as this. But I'm not buying it. Why? Because I don't need it. But for me as a writer who loves my Remarkable and uses it primarily until I'm in the mood to type and then have to hop onto a computer (at which point all productivity goes out the window?) This is well worth it and will be in constant use for me. Again, not for everyone, but for those of us it's worth it for and have the privelege to buy it? Perfect. Great video as always and I'm excited for my Typefolio's arrival tomorrow.

I was just explaining this to someone the other day. They said "you could be a iPad or actually for the same price." Yeah but they do have what I'm specificity looking for , they kept naming of these other products and I'm like "once again , they don't have what I'm looking for , which is no distractions and each thing you named , my phone does already, and that too is distracting. I'm trying to minimize distractions and focus on writing and reading" They were not having it. I just don't explain anymore. I write I draw (which it's great for drawing) i read. That's why I have it 😂😂😂

Quick comment on the sleep not being engaged when closing: It is not really that relevant for an e-ink screen as it's not refreshing as often as a light-based screen

That limited keyboard . . . How to type an em-dash? How to add a Chicago-style ellipsis? (dotNBSPdotNBSPdot) I'm evaluating this as a writer. I suppose the point is to get your text down and edit it all in a computer later.

I think it’s designed for rough drafts, but as someone who also uses em-dashes you are out of luck there.

I don't believe they have built in Bluetooth keyboard support yet for your own, but someone can correct me if they've added that.

@@BrandonKBoswell there are many things I like about the remarkable, particularly the lack of connectivity/distraction. But I have far too many Bluetooth keyboards not being used, to buy a very expensive proprietary one for this machine. The case and set up is really sleek though. Very minimalist and lovely.

There are no accent keys. At least if there are its not intuitive. I emailed them, and they said its “enter special characters and accents using keyboard shortcuts, similar to the ones used on a computer.” Um…what? That’s not helpful. I can’t get “ç” “èéê” “àáâ” etc not helpful

I just got my type folio yesterday and its going back to reMarkable. The materials of the folio are totally cheap plastic, nothing like the premium leather-like folios they offer. The edges that are fuse sealed are going to fail, they are going to dry and crack right off like anything that has an edge like that. I can't believe more people aren't going nuts about this? The folio is expensive, it should be much higher quality. Keyboard is ok, no complaints there if it was in a better package. I disagree that this is anything like the surface, much cheaper quality.

How’s it weird with keyboard with option and alt, obviously he doesn’t use a windows and Mac keyboard at the same time on regular basis … a windows keyboard is layed out as Ctrl Windows Alt, while a Mac is layed out Ctrl Option Command. It’s the same damn buttons with different names

Again I don’t understand the policy of this company. 200 $ for this ??? What the hell are they thinking and what do they want to achieve with all this stupidness ?? They didn’t learn anything from the contact service how it was a huge failure ?? The device itsself is so expencive the pen is expensive and now this ?? I don’t know what do they want other than making people prefer to buy a kindle or a boox over their product

It is definitely pricey, but for some the additional focus is probably a worthwhile investment. It is not for everyone and I don’t think all reMarkable users NEED it.
