Fantastic day and evening at my second home!! ❤️
A lot has changed with the M4 since I was last there:
Bilstein B16 coilovers
New EBC RPX pads. The last few sets of pads have been DS1.11 and DSUNO. The RPX are so much better, hopefully there won't be any more problems with supply
Yokohama AD09 tyres in 275/30/19 front + 295/30/19 rear on stock wheels with 12mm spacers. Fit is absolutely perfect, no rubbing whatsoever 👌
Firstly, is the car any quicker with the suspension? I can only compare to the M Perfromance HAS kit and contrary to popular internet opinion it's not really any quicker. I was at Bedford a few weeks ago running the same brakes and tyres as a previous visit just 3 weeks before in identical conditions, the difference was 0.2 seconds quicker on a 2.40 track.
At Brands, it's not a fair test as I'm running different tyres, but on 245+265 cup2 tyres the car did 52.7 a couple of months ago. Yesterday, it did 52.9 on the much bigger AD09. I think the time would've been quicker on a cooler day. I might put the cup 2 back on and test again in a couple of weeks, will update if so.
It may not be any quicker but the car feels brilliant. The stock ARB's work well on the M4 and previously my only real complaint was diving and squatting, the B16's have done a great job at fixing this. It also has far less roll through the corner. The car feels much lighter, it's more like my old Skyline.
The brakes were simply amazing. Having had to use DS1.11 and DSUNO recently it really made me appreciate getting back to EBC RPX pads. They're so powerful and consistent you never feel you're going to run out of brakes and this makes the car so consistent.
Yokohama AD09 seem like a brilliant tyre. This video shows the first session and first lap after setting pressures. It was a hot day and tyre temp was up to nearly 100c by the end. As with most tyres the first lap was the best with a 52.9, then 53.1 then they were consistent at around 53.4 +/- 0.02 seconds over a 20 min session. It didn't feel like they generate as much G as more focused track tyres but they can be bought at half the cost and are very nearly as fast. I suspect they'll last many times longer too. The car also feels great on them; breakaway is slow and predictable, braking is a really strong point and they give lots of audible noise when at the limit which is helpful to some.
Yesterday was probably the most fun I've had with the M4 in 6 years!

Another good video Sam 👌 Good to hear your thoughts on the AD09r. I've recently swapped to them. Very civilised on the road. Was a touch disappointed with the outright grip in handling the torque at lower speeds/rpms but been really pleased with the turn in, tyre stiffness and predictable feel on faster turns. Good value and seem a good compromise. Also interesting to see your comments on pads. Had rp-x and thought the bite and consistencywas exceptional. Currently on ds3.12 all round and absolutely blown away by them. Might start saving for some B16s now after seeing your enthusiasm in your write up.......😅

Thanks Duncan!! What pressures were you running the AD09? I went for 28 hot, I think they might work better when cooler as 4 tenths difference is a lot at Brands. Exactly as you say though, it's a compromise and I'll gladly take a tyre that's nearly as quick for half the price that probably lasts more than twice as long! Heard some good things about the DS3.12 but they're far more expensive than RPX and I'm really happy with them. Problem with suspension is most of the people that sell it know nothing and most of the people that recommend it the same 😂 I'm so pleased I didn't follow any trends and spend over 3k on suspension that would require rebuilding every other year for no real benefit. The Bilsteins are monotube and TUV approved so should last. The adjustment makes a huge difference and having 10 clicks of adjustment is more than enough. Kits that boast 3000 different adjustments are ridiculous, it would take 25 years to work out settings 🤣 B16 are stiffer than my old mperfromance HAS kit but less crashy, I'd say they pretty much nailed the springs and dampers, its very stiff when on full hard, then very much softer when full soft. If you want to change them Bilstein UK will revalve and give you different springs.

I've been wanting to try the AD09 on my stock wheels aswell! Great to read that you like them. I was looking for 265/35R19 + 295/30 R19 on the stock wheels. Surprised to hear that. the 275 fit well in the front. Aren't they bulging ? Also I was thinking on goin rear no spacer and front 15 mm with this setup. Crazy that they don't rub with the 295 and 12 mm spacers.

So far so good but I’ll reserve judgment until they’ve done some more track days, sometimes tyres work well the first time then heat cycle out despite having lots of tread, the older AD08R were a bit like this. 265/35/19 + 295/30/19 I wouldn’t use, the 30 at the rear will drop the rear height by 10mm at least and when using on track imagine it’ll understeer. With 275 and 295 I could’ve done with more front grip but will probably solve this with adjusting the dampers. No bulging. You can check Yokohama website to see what size rims they recommend. If you go 265/35/19 front I think you’ll rub with a spacer, I’ve tried that size in cup 2 with 12mm spacer and it would rub. If you run same sizes as me it’ll lower the car about 10 mm, so if you have clearance issues beware.

@@samellio Very interesting. I've looked up the Yoko website and you're right minimum for 275/30R19 is 9" and minimum for 295/30R19 y 10" so oem wheels spec. I'm running right now 15mm spacer upfront with 255/35R19 and about -2,7 camber with KW and haven't had any rubbing issues upfront but 275/35R19 with 12mm spacer on the rear and on very hard compresion has light rub in the fender liners. That's why I was thinking puting the 12 mm spacer upfront with 265/35 and running 295/30 without any spacer in the rear. Also I think your setup will be better for the abs as both axels will be propotional to OEM specs. I need to make some calculations then. Do you have some pictures of how the tires fits to the wheel? I would love to run my 763m with the ad09 for track use.

I wouldn’t worry about the abs, I’ve run lots of different setups, loads of square setups but also 265fr/305rear and never noticed any difference. On this track, the fastest it’s ever gone was on 275/35/19 square on stock wheels, no spacer front and 12mm rear. I’ve got pictures of the tyres on the wheels but no easy way to share them, they look fine, certainly not ballooned. If these tyres work well for a lot of heat cycles I may go for 265/35/19 front and 285/35/19 rear only because it gives the car more height so will clear my drive better. The 275/30/19 and 295/30/19 are perfect if you don’t mind the car a bit lower. Also, here in UK price of ad09 is £600 (700$)a set in these prices. If they were the same price as ar-1 I’d buy ar-1.

@@samellio 265/35/19 & 285/35/19 was also an option that I thought about but I thought that 295 on the rear may the best option to maximize track grip. About AR-1 I would also order them but they just don't make many good 19" options and I've been told the grear difference of the ad09 vs normal semis are that they come with more thread depth and they last significantly more. I'll wait to hear from you about what you think about 275&295 and I will go for either that or the 265/35/19 & 285/35/19 combo.
