my flange was put in in 1959. It was not soldered, just bent over the flange. Never leaked. I replaced the flange because it was broke. Could have bent it back over the flange like it was done in 1959 but i used Hercules plastic silicone which is a lead substitute. Worked well.

The soldered flange looked so nice after you finished whipping it. Would pre-soldering a coating onto the flange help? Then apply the flux onto the solder coated flange and proceed as shown?
