Bravely Default was actually a surprise hit in the US. I don't think Square Enix expected it to perform so well! I remember playing it while in college on campus and getting a lot of streetpasses (It was a 3DS game).

Not only was it a shocking success, it got both a direct sequel in Bravely Second and a numbered sequel in Bravely Default 2.

square enix actually refused to localize the first game! nintendo had to do it themselves when bravely second was confirmed and a "for the sequel" release launched in Japan. (which is the version we got in the west) it then proceeded to outsell lightning returns here in the west, which square enix was not expecting AT ALL, since they literally made lightning returns (and ff13 in general) with the western audience in mind, while bravely default was always conceived as a japan-only game

@@maybepolly_ it just shows that Square Enix at least back then really didn't know how much the Western audience's perception of JRPGs had changed from a negative or neutral one to an extremely positive one. I think the biggest issue I see with it is the fact that right before the 3ds one of the most successful Square Enix games without Final Fantasy in the title had released in the form of DQ9 and pretty much revitalized Western interest in JRPGs that aren't just Final Fantasy. Then instead of following on the success of 9 in the west they ended up making us wait for around 9 years skipping over DQ10 entirely while shoving ff13 and 14 down our throats both of which were mediocre entries at best. Like sure ff13 and ff14 were better than ff2 but so is almost every other JRPG that Square Enix has made. At least after bringing in Bravely Default and Bravely Second and re-releasing some of the DQ games they quit shutting down the West for JRPGs, sure we still aren't necessarily as much of a success for the company but JRPG sales only continue to rise every year which has allowed for further remakes of game ips like TWEWY or the constant rumors of a potential DQ9 remake or remaster and the creation of sequels for IPs such as NEO:TWEWY for the TWEWY IP or DQ12 getting announced as under development with intent of same day distribution worldwide whenever it finally does release. TLDR: Square Enix underestimated how much Western gaming had changed throughout the years especially after what was easily the most successful DQ game in the west proved that Final Fantasy wasn't the only JRPG that could work. After Bravely Default and Bravely Second released in the west thanks to Nintendo and further proved that JRPGs as a whole could work, not just exclusively Final Fantasy, by beating ff13 in sales other ips would come back swinging.

Hell the returning IPs are soon to include Chrono Cross the relatively obscure sequel of Chrono Trigger so I think the biggest thing about all this is that Square Enix really got it confirmed that they can experiment and that the west is interested.

The live version is sooo good! The kids make it creepy af, but it fits the boss battles which are themed after the personification of distorted/bastardized happy memories of a woman from our world forcibly taken to the Bravely world.

Actually it's the other way around. Altair was the one forced to go to Luxendarc. Vega was unfortunately left behind. That's why the most powerful, and nearly indestructible, Ba'al is Diamante. It represents the diamond engagement ring that Altair gave her before he was shoved on a rocket to escape the end of the world (it's the strongest and most recent memory). That's also why the secret Ba'al, Firstborn is so difficult to hit. It represents the child they never got to have, and because it's an abstract thought rather than a memory, it can't take on a fully solid form.

The song being a little creepy isn't an accident. Ba'als in Bravely Default are usually optional bosses you can take on and they tend to take very *strange*, eerie designs. Despite that, I'll always connect this song with the wedding chicken more than the others. Bravely Default is a pretty popular traditional jrpg that's sort of taken the place of old school Final Fantasy games since we haven't had a "normal" Final Fantasy since... 10, I'd say. There's three games so far. Bravely Default and it's direct sequel, Bravely Second, from the 3DS era. More recently, we've had the confusingly titled Bravely Default 2 that's not really connected to the previous two.

Optional town rebuilding monsters in the first, plot relevant actual bosses in second. To the point where magnolia unironically uses the term ba’al buster to describe it. And yes ba’al is pronounce like ball

As an avid fan of Bravely, this is one I’m very excited for. From the children chanting mirroring how mythology depicts Baal devouring child sacrifices, to the fact it’s a remix of At Battle’s End/Fighting to the End/The Monster Boss Theme, all the way to how well it fits the Ba’als in this game… such a masterpiece of a track. As with most of Revo’s work. I like Second’s OST a lot still, but it genuinely is just very, very hard to live up to and compare to Revo. And so I admire what it was separately there.

Bravely Default lives were performed sooo well. Anyway, I recommend you some Sound Horizon work too, Revo is a fucking genius. This guy can literally do anything: He can compose any genre of music, he plays differents instruments (Guitar, Piano, Accordion, Vocals and even Bagpipes), he has acted on stage, conducted a string quartet, he's a very creative lyrics writer and storywriter and much more.

For me, the thing that makes the live versions of these songs so impressive is that they're possible at all. I recall another VGM creator, Alex Moukala, asking how they managed to mix these songs, and he was *flabbergasted* to know there was a live concert. The sheer amount of technical expertise on display, plus the ambience of the stage, makes the live versions the infinitely superior versions of these songs, imo.

it was meant to bee creepy tbh, without story spoilers, the Ba'als in the first game are basically golden skeletons of animals with gems and expensive decorations that replace their organs, in the sequel it expands to other types of monster but they all share human made items as parts of their bodies

Sound Horizon is the group's name and their composer is Revo! Before Bravely Default, they were (and still are) most famous for their musical performances! There's even staged performances. There's a whole bunch of them on youtube too. They mix fantasy and orchestral/metal and have different stories to tell with their music. I remember trying to get into their stuff when I was younger but... the language barrier made it hard lol And at the time, there weren't as many places i could search for a translation.

Bravely Default is quite popular, but I think the main reason why these concerts are so high-quality and high-budget is more about the composer and the band. Sound Horizon (and by extension, Linked Horizon) is quite big in Japan - nowhere near mainstream, but popular enough in its category to easily sell out entire venues and for the record labels to see it fit to constantly throw money at Revo.

Oh man, the Baal theme is awesome. Looking forward to this premiere. They appeared as optional superbosses in Bravely Default to tease for Bravely Second, where they played a much larger role and we were introduced to more of them. The song is intentionally creepy because the Baals are all these twisted monsters made of everyday objects, like giant monsters made of test tubes and chemical equations, or a giant slug made of snow and skiing equipment. They’re actually memories of a person long gone that have been twisted into monsters by the game’s true villain to sic upon the world and try to destroy it. And at one point in the game… the villain succeeds. All combat encounters are now max level Baals until you manage to undo that victory.

The game is in the states (and is global), but it's definitely a lot bigger in Japan than anywhere else. The series is basically aiming to be a revitalization of the classic turn based JRPG style, which FF was rooted in, but hasn't been for decades, so it appeals more to people who are more familiar with old final fantasy and dragon quest etc. Luckily the series is getting more recognised outside of Japan since it recently (last year) got an entry on the switch. Used to just be on 3DS and some mobile titles.

One thing I still am sad about during this live performance is that they messed up with syncing the singer (Hanayo Kimura) with the sound in the DVD - but else, this is such an amazing track even though I never got to the battle ingame because I was so done with the grinding :D And as always, my love for Revo/Sound Horizon will never be broken, so I'll always be happy to see you reacting to Bravely Default stuff

I was really hoping you’d do this one at some point. Along with all the other context, these are optional boss fights that you can accidentally start and the first thing you hear is the creepy chanting and ominous melody telling you all about the danger and to immediately run. However, if you’re actually staying long enough to fight, THATS when the song will pick up and start actually realizing you’re fighting, leading to the motifs kicking in and becoming inspirational instead of terrifying.

this is a bit old, but here's a bit of context: Ba'als are essentially outer gods ala Cthulhu in that their visual representation is based off of our perception and understanding of what they are since again, they are beings from outside the universe here to either control or destroy the dimension(the bravely games are technically a multiverse). the final boss of second is essentially a ba'al/human from our universe but the perception of them has them represented as a monster because technically they are an imperceivable higher-dimensional being, hope that helps.

The reason there is so much production value is because the game is developed by Square Enix. They really care about the music in their games and how the music is presented outside of the games (see Final Fantasy, etc)

Hehehe, the OST is longer and WAY harder. Also we do have Bravely Default, Bravely Second and Bravely Default 2 (3DS, 3DS Direct Sequel, Switch, more like the FF2 to FF1) I think we are missing a few entries, but overall the game is not what you'd call "bigger" over there vs over here, they just have a larger market for phone games and stuff which don't get translations half the time anyway because of that.

I'm sure the reason why the music is very much like this isnt because of the monsters, Ba'als, are creepy, but because of what they are based off of. Ba'als are an actual folklore(dont know where from) but they eat the souls of children. Why you hear children in the theme.

thank you for reacting to Linked Horizon! it is indeed the same band, but i believe they were performing in different years - this being in 2015 and the other in 2012. Their concerts since 2010 has been on this quality of production i think mainly bc of Revo - the composer guy behind the Linked Horizon/Sound Horizon bands. these concerts follow the release of each respective album he does and I doubt they were linked to Square Enix at all? it's very unfortunate that Revo's only ever done the soundtrack to two games - Bravely Default and Bravely Default 2 - because I'd love to see you reacting to his various other musical endeavors too. i'm glad you enjoyed his music!!
