Expect the unexpected in the desert. We revisit our second home at the Mt Dare Hotel. This time, we helped out the workshop for 2 weeks during the busy Finke Desert Race of 2024.
Did we fix your car and try to get you out of trouble? There were many more recoveries and broken vehicles that did not come through the workshop!
We experienced rainfall, closed roads, the first State of Origin game (just) and muddy broken cars.
The Mt Dare Hotel is in Outback South Australia on the western edge of the Simpson Desert. Experience it for yourself. Dare to Prepare.

You were and are two of the nicest people anyone could ever hope to meet. Add to that you are so capable and helpful. You saved our group trip, and we're extremely greatful to you both for doing so. It was also super interesting to learn you lead group trips and provide tracks and content to Hema. What a couple of understated Aussie champions. I hope you have great travel adventures after Mt. Dare in your Hilux. I hope you enjoyed the beer. Cheers, Craig (white Prado 150 - brake pads and me cleaning the residual mud of the inside of my Methods with the shop brush).

No shortage of work, if you see how city slickers drive on rough roads, its just utter equipment carnage. Up at Cape York, my dad saw this old guy with a new landcruiser, who had driven it so hard on the rough, the engine bay firewall was cracked clean through from one side to the other, utterly destroyed.

I lived in WA Outback abou 12 years back, four hours north east of Kal. We had to make do with what was available cos spare parts was four hours away at Kal. The local tip was known as Mitre 11 cos our first port of call was the tip when in need of parts or bits and pieces. Had a Landrover with a 186 holden six cylinder on the cattle station. No spark, after examination, found it had an aftermarket contactless system on the engine which was producing no spark. Me and my mate visited the local tip. There was a Kingswood HZ with a 202 six cylinder engine, we removed the whole distributor and put it on the 186, Voila, spark and the engine started! Saved us a day driving to Kal for replacement parts and returning.

Guys can I say impressive, you are great together and what you have to share is engaging informative and entertaining. My takeaway is maintenance and not just servicing there is a large gap in this particular area currently once upon a time your mechanic was a family friend who was a custodian for your safety and your vehicles maintenance not a franchised wealth creation system owned by a trust or corporation minimising taxation. Sorry, love your work keep doing what you do

Real cool guys, when I was a truck driver on the local council, we had ex-Army guys come and test our driving for a day. They wanted me to skip gears and just use the brakes to stop, don't go back through the gears this was a tad silly to me brake drums wear out and cost a lot of money to replace. Gear boxes can handle a lot of changes. Great job you guys.

Tip for when you don't have a tom thumb pump - run a bit of hose from your fluid container into whatever you're filling/transferring to, then put you hand covering the lid of the fluid container and use compressor to blow air into it - it'll force the fluid through the hose.

Next time you get some tyre repair supplies, get the workshop to buy you a valve air coupler/fitting for the tyres. Looks like a nitto fitting but its threaded internally and screws onto the valve. The other end is a male nitto fitting you can clip an air line onto. So when youre doing truck tyres or big 4wd like that, itll blast air into the valve as you fire the bead blaster into the tyre. Will help you get it up on the bead.

Never a dull moment 😆 for sure. Been a mechanic and fitter for over 30 years , you don't know what is going to come through the gate or what its going to be when you answer the phone 😲. Great to see a female mechanic keeping it real ✅ Preventative maintenance is the key. Competent Replacement of old or suspect components prior to failure is best. Finding a competent mechanic is a challenge these days . Reduce speeds the vehicle is heavily loaded , take a extra week or two to slow down and enjoy the trip so you don't punish the vehicle. For Excellent articles on tyres and tyre repair for tyres used for off track and remote track work can be found on Beadell Tours website . Educational reading and no marketing gimmicks. Long live the locking ring ( split rim ) wheel .
