We continue catching up with the great international films on the Oscars shortlist with a review of Aki Kaurismäki's "Fallen Leaves." The latest from the Finnish auteur follows two lonely, isolated people (Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen) as they struggle to connect in modern-day, working-class Helsinki. Within the restrained tone there are huge laughs and deep longing. In theaters now and streaming on Mubi.

Kaurismäki is just a genius !!! He creates his own world with so simple issues but deep themes and between the rare brilliant lines is so much. The acting and just faces tell so much. The girl band is a perfect fit too. The use of colors is awesome.

This was such a refreshing take on the romcom formula, because you have all the usual tropes but it's in such a different setting with different people than you're used to seeing -- especially if (like me) you grew up with 80s and 90s romcoms, where everyone seems to have lucrative publishing jobs and their love lives are literally their only challenge.

Oooh I've been looking forward to this one. Knew it was understated and joyful but wasn't aware it was also laugh out loud funny (and I appreciate a good oddball sense of humor!). Also only 81 minutes long? Will have to watch.

We watched this tonight and simply loved it. The silence and minimalism is such a breath of fresh air and it's so authentic. Simultaneously it's emotionally resonant, pitch perfect. It would have been in my top ten od 2023 if I'd seen it in time. I love this film so much! Thanks for the therapy session ☺

I ate at the Zetor restaurant in Helsinki. One of the Leningrad Cowboys (the band in Kaurismaki's "Leningrad Cowboys Go America") owned it. The name comes from a Russian tractor and the food was good.

I can’t explain why I enjoyed Fallen Leaves so much. I just found myself smiling the entire movie and taken with the story. Even though I didn’t cry or laugh out loud, I felt all the emotions once the characters were finally able to express them

I've always been iffy about Kaurismäki's movies. He is kind of an institution on his own around here in Finland, but his style definitely isn't for everyone. However, this one feels like he finally got the formula right after four decades of trying. It feels very similary to many of his other movies from the past, but manages to make the characters sympathetic in a way he hasn't managed before. Fun fact: the girl band is called Maustetytöt, which would be Spice Girls in English.

It's an okay movie. Typical romcom material, but because it's done in that snail pace arthouse style you critics go crazy. If the same exact story had been done as a Hollywood movie with a romcom pace and romcom music, critics would pan it, as they pan most women comfort movies. The best thing I can say about this one is that at least it's short, so the boredom is bearable. The fact that it's 98% critics on RT, though only 50% audience tells you this is one of those 'critics movies' not for regular consumption lol !

Not typical at all. This film has nothing to do with typical romantic comedies. Movies aren't meant to be just consumpted.

It's a romcom stripped of pace and music, and some dialogue. It's okay but nothing like critics pretend it is. Why is "understated" so appreciated? It's like every arthouse movie. There's nothing fresh or bold about it, just an arthouse cliche.@@Mustanaamio7

We love rom-coms and take them seriously. Heck, Alonso even co-wrote a book about Hallmark Christmas movies. You must mean some other "you critics."

Sorry ma'am, I know you meant well. But Kaurismaki doesn't (or at least shouldn't) remind of anyone other than Kaurismaki. I've seen every single film by him including Fallen Leaves and studied him in film school. His films are most consistently the same dead pan, gentle, stoic yet uplifting style, the same closed, minimalistic mise-en-scene, the same ode to old school films and soviet type of nostalgia, maybe the humour has dropped a notch from Leningrad Cowboy days. But Kaurismaki is himself, truly his own self. Maybe the only director comparable to him is Jim Jarmusch, and they are good friends too. I love Almodovar. He is nothing like Aki. I'm guessing you haven't seen much of Kaurismaki's filmography. Watch a few, you'll know what I'm talking about. Kind regards from Prague.

I haven't watchd this movie yet, but I have gotten so many mixed reviews from friends that are hard core Kaurismäki fans, some just though it was recyceled Kaurismäki, and didn't think anything special out of it, one even described it like "it was almost like a Kaurismäki -movie made by AI....I Have to watch it when I have the time though.
