The silence is not that awkward, moreso it's fundamental nature of Finnish socialization. Glad to hear you enjoyed the film!

If you haven’t seen any of Aki Kaurismäki’s previous work then you are in for a treat for some more quirkiness and amazing visuals. I think his films are very Finnish but also referring to a very specific time and place in Finnish culture and ‘Finnishness’. The silences have a way to appear very comedic when in fact Finns are quite often very much at ease with being silent. There is that famous joke about an American guy and a Finnish guy where the Finnish guy says to the American; “You talk a lot but you don’t say anything”. That pretty much sums it up.

Kaurismäki is a genius the more you go into his work...the clearer it will become. This film won international prices in Cannes and whole arena 2000 people clapped hands and were standing for Kaurismäki -> A+ for sure.

Just caught this at a local arthouse theater and it felt refreshing. Cant really put my finger on why.

I haven't seen the movie but I have just read a (glowing) review of it in an Italian newspaper - you may already know this but just in case, in the article they write that the dog in the movie is in fact Aki's dog!

I'm proud to see that Kuolleet Lehdet got two Golden Globes nominations, including Alma for best lead actress in a comedy. The film's perfect in my opinion... and it's interesting how people from other countries find it also funny because the humor is very Finnish 😂

Sounds like you will enjoy Kaurismäki's films. I'll mention his short film 'Rocky VI' just to recommend another black and white love story/boxing movie called 'The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Mäki'.

I have seen almost all of Kaurismäki's films, and Fallen Leaves is definitely in the Top 5 (my favourite is still Drifting Clouds, though). In the weirdest way possible, they are always about hope, and about solidarity. You will also never find a rich or "successful" person in any of them, which I find very refreshing too. Somebody mentioned this to me but that scene with the girl band (Maustetytöt, thanks Kaurismäki) whose music is very upbeat 80's synth but with those incredibly depressing lyrics really encapsulates the feel of the movie.

In the salad, those are hearts of palm. She bought them along with the wine.

@YukiMatsuiMets I seriously doubt that, heart of palm is not commonly eaten in Finland, but white asparagus is a common delicacy. They may look similar.

The final joke about the dog’s name is hilarious because Kaurismaki is telling you “I’m making my own Chaplin’s Modern Times”

Roy Andersson's first film came out in 1970 and Aki Kaurismäki's first one came one came out in 1983.

Yes though I don’t think that deadpan existential humor became his trademark until later

I agree. Andersson's aesthetic wasn't fully formed till Songs From the Second Floor. By which time Kaurismäki had about a dozen brilliant films.

Salads in the nordics and russia are more than just green salads. So that was not a joke. It was funny that it didn't look great, but that was an actual Finnish salad.

Wow! This two commentators don't know asparagus. There's nothing strange or funny in that salad. It's white asparagus with eggs.

A Finnish person here. This is not a politically correct opinion in Finland, but I don't like Kaurismäki's films. He recycles the same stuff from film to film, the characters look the same, the same old jokes about socially awkward Finns. I always expect something new from him, but nothing really shows up.
@fcabezas
@fcabezas 6 ай бұрын
I think the same but he is not a film director, he is an author. He makes the same movie but with 3 variations and magically it works. He is perfecting his own formula.
