I think it's amazing!! A big step forward for the breaking scene and we really need this Breakin has been underground for far too long. It's not fair that basketball player football players Soccer players are all getting paid big bucks becoming super celebrities Known worldwide. We work just as hard as they do at our craft Breakin needs to be recognized the same way!! No more staying underground let's come into the light !! 💯 We deserve to be recognized like real athletes Straight up

Great post roxrite. Tbh when I first heard the news, I was worried for the art form. I remember the New York City breakers wanting it to be in the Olympics back in the day. For me personally it’s a dance not a sport, however battling is competitive which is similar to sport. Like many people have already stated the pros to it being in the Olympics which I agree with. The cons for me are separating it too much from DJing, MCing and graffiti, which I doubt they’ll involve at the Olympics (hopefully they’ll atat least have a DJ!) My final concern would be that it makes Breakin too polished! It’s meant to funky and raw! If all the judges are experienced respected breakers like OGs crazy legs, storm etc or next gen like lilou & neguim etc then they’ll keep the judging based on the right things. Breakin is beautiful to me so I pray it blesses the dance & not ruins it :) peace :)

I reckon if countries that are sending their representatives select only the bboys and bgirls that rock up consistently and support their local scene, it will definitely keep the integrity of hip-hop alive. We now have all the power in our hands thanks to social media. Each country has the ability to create a body of respectable bboys and bgirls to build a team. Always remember that we have that power now.

As long as it's bboys judging bboys, I'm not going to sweat it. I just don't want it to turn into gymnastics or diving where moves are rated by difficulty and points. That's where the style and personality dies.

That's not necessarily true. if you look at a sport like gymnastics, there are different categories, different events, different moves which over the years built aa rating system that works for it. creativity has always drove gymnastics and creators of new moves has always gotten credit for creating those new moves or adding to a move. i look at it closest to how gymnastics is rated to as how breaking could be rated because they both have all the similar elements of the what make the art form. So as long it is the people that oversee the bboy culture now is involved in setting the rules i think it can work as a sporting competition style event where people that work hard to elevate it get the rewards. Also it would bring in big advertising and big sponsorship to help finally allow the bboy practitioners that elevate it to bee paid the big dollars like other sports figures do. instead of just the event promoters just making all the dollars. imagine a bboy getting a $100 million dollar contract in the future. So its all in how you look at it.

The Olympics doesn't overshadow the World Cup. So long as it doesn't overshadow the BC One or similar events, I'm down. I think it's cool that France offered the idea. Although birthed here in the States, France has really carried the torch in terms of holding up Hip hop culture. Much appreciated. Hip hop isn't just rap.

Every sport in the Olympics has an annual or biennial World Championship by its respective governing bodies. No sport is Olympics only, but the Olympics does give the sport(s) a huge PR and attention boost. If you don't have preexisting tournaments you actually can't meet the criteria to be included in the Olympics because you need to have an established competition scene to be recognized by GAISF and then you 'might' get recognized by IOC.

Well said Roxrite. Thats exactly what I think and feel. It's gonna be up to the surviving O.G's and us following generations to keep the rawness and authenticity of our culture it's just a platform for us and a avenue for each one to reach one to teach one.
@iamcrosone
@iamcrosone 3 жыл бұрын
It's just another platform albeit a big one. But nothing changes for actual practitioners in the perspective ways they celebrate the art. Its not a one or the other type of deal. It's in addition to what's already happening. I think the extra people watching will definitely see what we see and fall in love with the dance and the culture.

Great video brother! Agree with you on all points there. As you mentioned there's no need to separate the art vs sport aspect and judge it purely by that. Since it's the battle element of Breaking that's going to the Olympics, it allows for the rest of the community to remain the same. The small jams will keep happening, dancers will continue to teach workshops and use their craft to transform other people's lives. It's another avenue that has opened up to us and it's solely up to the dancers to choose that path or not. So far it looks like many of the elites are gunning for Olympic gold - who are also Hip Hop heads. Over time we as a scene will gain confidence about the Olympics and I can only see this as a positive addition. Keep up the great work Rox 🤘🏻

From my perspective, as you mentioned, this is an opportunity for the community to introduce breaking to a wider audience and educate them about the art. The moment it goes into the Olympics, those OG's in the know will be left out and the new OGs who've won recent competitions who HAVE NOT GONE THROUGH THE STRUGGLE(S) -EXAMPLE- getting arrested for loitering, dance studios not letting us in, police giving tickets for street performing, I can keep going. The dance world already barricades those who laid the foundation down for the new Gen. And, the OG's who should be calling shots dropped the ball for personal gain. YES. Im personally not all for it. Itll lead to some great opportunities for some bboys and thats great. More exposure is great for people to see what bboying rly is. I wish i was exposed more at a young age. But im very much against the commercializing of these things. Big corporations, imo, absolutely ruin everything. I mean bc one has become huge over the years. I personally loved it so much more years back than i do today w/ all the crap they do like commentators talking over the battles constantly and camera crew having absolutely no idea how to record a battle for viewers. Bboying also doesnt have the underground, unique feel it once did 15 years ago and on. Pros n cons to everything.
@gitanjalimili8392
@gitanjalimili8392 3 жыл бұрын
i agree with ya. however, imo commercialization is actually required in this age, as you need a lot of money to survive, which you obviously couldn't get in the last 15 years or so. but now, bboys and bgirls from around the world can actually think of this as a career and survive. thus making the culture survive. so i guess its a step in the right direction. and people being worried over the dying of the street culture will never happen as to win any competition or to become any international bboy, you need to experience that cypher vibe and the crew vibe. dont ya agree?

B-Boying has been increasingly underground since the late 90s and early 2000s, outside of maybe France and South Korea, and doesn't get the attention it deserves. The Olympics will make it global reaching places where it was never big, and give it exposure back in places like the US. I think this was a great move. Every street "sport" starts out with some people pushing back and saying it shouldn't be a sport. Same happened with skateboarding in the 90s, and Parkour today. But ultimately it does help out. Breaking's turned into the forgotten child of Hip Hop lately, and far too many people can't tell the difference between Breaking and Pop-locking (which is from Funk, not hip hop BTW). B-boying needs that spotlight back.

Let's get honest, the local event and cypher bboys who love music and the culture are different from those who usually go to big mainstream competitions and will train like crazy all the year for the Olympics. Unfortunately this is an utopic thinking, they won't ever care about our culture, they just care about their own profit and how this may attract more people and attention from young people who doesn't give a shit about the traditional olympic sports. Especially nowadays that hiphop or street culture is so present in profitable industries like fashion or music.

Yea, we've known that. For those that choose to rep this dance the way you say is dope. Its a choice they have and have gone on to live by. I side with that because i lived that way myself. I didnt pursue full time breaking until i was 26 years old. Quite late, i battled would go to jams just to get down sometimes, parties, local clubs when dope djs would rock. Stuff not many people saw and i love that side of this culture. I think theyve already stated that, they want to include breaking to expand on what they have done. Everything has a double edge sword. Wether its in the olympics or not, so we either stay doing our stuff the way we feel should be repped and help influence how it should be presented at a platform like the olympics or if not then just keep it moving and create our own lanes. Going after titles and going to big jams isnt for everyone. I just care about doing this the way i feel is dope to me and the way i grew up with it. Trust me not everyone connects with my views either thats the way life is. The deeper side of the dance is also not for everyone. People are selective to what they want from this dance. We preach culture and all this stuff, but in the end all i see is people looking to be entertained. Even in our own community. So no i dont have a utopic mentality when it comes to this.

I think this is amazing. Really, people are scared that it would take the artistic merit away, where was that talk at the Red Bull competitions. At worst, its a annoyance, but this is great news for the breaking community. We are at a crossroads to see if its possible to make a good living off being a professional break-dancer. And with the rise of Red Bull, international competitions, and now the Olympics? This is great news for breakers who want to pursue this as their life. Guys like Bumblebee or Shigekix can make money and gain fame for their craft alone because now there are audiences willing to see them and sponsors to willing to represent them. You can now be recognized around the world, be sponsored, and continue to perform at the highest level.

tbh i think its dumb. I mean, it's not bad for the breaking community as it will certainly increase exposure and money coming into the breaking culture etc, but breaking is not an olympic sport. I think this speaks more to the Olympics going downhill than anything. The olympics have already ruined many artforms (martial arts, fencing, etc) due to their point system and judging, and i dont see any reason why the same wont happen to breaking. But at least more events and prizepools should be available now. just my thoughts, pce

My brother, Emile YX? from Cape Town, South Africa here. As always Hip Hop Culture has survived all the comments and insults of society and shown that it is truly thee most global expression. As with all other events that have come, stayed and some gone, we will be here no matter what happens. The Olympics is just another platform and opportunity for Breaking to shine and as an African teacher, it allows for the opportunity to teach another heritage or history that does not nullify or belittle what is not understood by the current global regime. It is an opportunity to rewrite and rename and fix (as you said) the lies that media and then some in our own communities have perpetuated. Hip Hop is NOT from NOTHING. People in the South Bronx came from Africa, South America, Jamaica, etc and did not have nothing. (nothing is in reference to economics anyway and not a value of a people). Those people in the Bronx brought with them ALL of their human HERITAGE and GREATNESS that gave birth or RE-BIRTHED this form of expression that has ties to who we have always been as HUMANS. We have an opportunity here for Breaking to BREAK the lies and re-educate the world about this humanity and return EQUALITY. My & Our Ancestors (FIRST NATION PEOPLE) say that The String from our ancestors and between ALL LIFE, has been broken and Hip Hop Culture has an opportunity to "Reconnect the String" from now back to the beginning of time and BREAK from this reality to connect with who we each are fundamentally to HEAL OURSELVES. Breaking/ B-boying has taught me this sense of self-worth and self-love where education has failed. Many will be drawn to win gold, it is my hope that they will also find what is more valuable than gold within themselves along the way. Stay Blessed ... e

I am excited to see how it will go. I guess there will be positive and negative aspects. Positive is of course it could help some Bboys make more money off Breaking and being able to dance as a full-time job. Also Bboys getting access to more and better Training Spots maybe. Negative could be one-sided and/or corrupt judging, maybe the creative aspect of Breaking getting lost. I wanna make a prediction of something negative that could happen (Not 100% serious though). As some states are looking to get as many medals in the Olympics as possible with all kinds of methods (aka Doping... a lot) I could see a lot of weird (doped) "Crews" from the PR China appearing out of nowhere, winning medals with Powermoves, bited styles and never-ending routines

Another negative aspect I see is as it will be a big Event with a lot of attention and money involved, there will be big jealousy in the scene, but that is nothing new. This phenomena can already be observed with the BC One.

I hope we are able to NOT overlook sincere serious concerns and voices, I hope we are able to NOT GET BLIND by instant visible positivity of opportunity and expansion. avoiding negativity and considering the serious issue are different. yet somehow STILL so many ppl say "Oh, you're so negative, that's a bad attitude." when someone brings up something just like "oh I think that can be a future problem. we shld re-consider more deeply." Yes. keeping the positive side brighter is of cos needed. and not giving an opportunity to go is just not that smart either. but, that doesn't mean it's okay to just blindly indulge into positivity. as everything goes, constant changing, expanding, evolving toward any direction, those are crucial activeness of our culture need. any culture indeed. nevertheless, what I really want to keep it close to my chest regarding the Olympics is, just like what Rox said in the video, there are a lot of issues that we, as a culture and community, will face through the Olympics. if WE "as a culture, a community, an artist" dont handle it by our own hand, the outcome of the Olympics will be damaging hard on our culture, industry, and of cos, the art of our own.

As a bboy and a sport's sciences student I know the two worlds aren't compatible, underground breaking and inclusive hip hop culture will lose many things in order to get in olympics and it sucks

This issue is similar to figure skating. It's both a sport and an art, but there's so much debate over rather which is "more" important and how the judging should reflect both aspects of it. I hope Breaking does better because FS is currently a MESS.

Yo wassup Roxrite bboy Grazzhoper here. Yea man I'm all for it breakin at the Olympics but my concern is that I hope the OGs and pioneers can let the Olympics still keep the essences of our culture. Like I don't how they're gonna judge or scoring points whatever but I hope they present like we got the 2 battlers and the 3 or 4 pro bboy or bgirl judges let's get it you know. Yes our culture goes hard and raw and free but maybe like before the announced the event we can give the audience and viewers a walk through of breakin (bboyin/bgirlin) the history, background, how it evolved. So my question is do u think that we may get a chance still keep the essences at the Olympics or is the media gonna take it over and throw the wrong terminology to the viewers

I dont have the answer to that but i will say, if we can get people to understand that this is much more than a 80s fad then we've progressed. In some ways i think we can preserve the dance. We gotta remember they are open to having breaking be a discipline at this level. So yea we could still preserve what we do to some level. We have to control the narrative as to what breaking is and what breaking will be once its there. Its a tournament just like any other breaking tournament we've seen.

Countries with a great established scene really deserve it. But some are going to have a hard time, GymNasty, CatchFlips&Chill, OnlyHands, ... who ever they can get just to seem decent... Question is will we embrace and respect them enough to make them feel welcome or are we going to gang on them the next IBE?... Who ever gets selected props, win or lose your friends will ask you to hang out and dance either way..

This can be good in terms of promoting hip-hop culture more broadly. But there are some things that need to be done right--for example, will musicality, style and top rock be part of what's judged? For example, many kids these days don't even do get-down's at all, it's literally hop around a bit and drop straight to the floor to the windmills and flares--ok for beginners, but that's unfortunate if that's where the dance is headed. Two other things: First, hopefully the individuality and expressiveness of battling doesn't offend mainstream sensibilities. We wouldn't want b-boys being penalized for "unsportsmanlike conduct" when they just battling. Second, I hope actual DJs will be allowed to spin at the Olympic breakin' sessions. That said, we've come a long way, and this is as big a global stage as it gets. Hope we rep hip-hop, and that the OGs are in the mix to pass the baton to the next generation.

WELL SAID!!!! I feel like there is already great representation as far as recognizing Breakin competitively (Battle of the Year for starters). While it feels like a validating moment, I'm worried that the Olympics would water it down.

I think olympics will no longer be olympics soon, it will be all the things that Red Bull promotes only, like breakdance, xgames, cliff dive, maybe then apnea, maybe then jumping from airplanes and do tricks before opening the parachute hehe
