The name of the episode is in reference to a sonnet written in 1818 by poet Percy Shelley: I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away. Ozymandias is what the greeks called Ramesses II, pharao of Egypt.

Walt's descended to the point where he only cares about his business. He believed he was in the clear, but then Jesse lured him to the desert and tricked him into incriminating himself. He's convinced himself if not for Jesse, he would have his family intact, his nest egg, and Hank would be alive.

It was Walt's fault in the grand scheme of things -- he got into the meth business. And he made friends with Jack and the gang. But small picture, it was also Jesse's fault for snitching, and bringing Hank into chasing down Walt through his money. Theoretically, Hank likely wouldn't have been out in the desert in that situation if not for Jesse. And no, I'm not on the "I love Walt" wagon, but I can understand his anger in that moment. Yes, Walt is delusional for not putting any blame on himself, but in his eyes, he and Jesse were a duo. Even though Walt was manipulative and often lying, we as viewers also clearly saw that he cared for Jesse. Thought of him as a second son, almost. Made plenty of decisions that helped or saved Jesse, not just himself. So when Jesse turned snitch and worked with Hank, Walt felt betrayed and angry. Then seeing Hank get killed because of said snitching, Walt lashed out at him. I'm not saying he's right or wrong, but I can empathize and understand him just as much as I do with Jesse.

I think it's kinda dumb to try to frame this as one particular character's fault. It's the culmination of many, many questionable decisions by many different characters. Yes, Walt let Jesse be kidnapped, but because Jesse was working with Hank. Yes, Jesse betrayed him to Hank, but because Walt poisoned Brock, someone he cares about, to manipulate him. Yes, Walt poisoned Brock to manipulate him, but it was because Jesse was loyal to Gus, and he needed to kill him. Yes, Jesse was loyal to Gus, but it was because he was being manipulated so Gus could get rid of Walt. You could go on forever like this. Every character believed that their actions were justifiable. That's what makes the show so great, and it's a much more complicated discussion than "It's this person's fault", "no, it's this person's fault".

Hi Imon & Abbi, just wanted to point out the pants in the desert when Walt was rolling the barrel. It's the same pair of pants from the pilot which I thought was neat. Also, notice how similar Walt's reaction to Hank being killed was to Gus' reaction when his business partner got killed in that season 4 flashback. Walt somehow did all these little things in a similar way to the people he killed. He started slicing his sandwiches the same way Krazy8 told him he liked having his sandwiches, he started drinking his whiskey on the rocks(even though he always drank his whiskey neat before he kiiled Mike) Another one was the way he went to throw up(when he realized his Walt Whitman novel was missing) he pretty much did the exact same thing Gus did when he forced himself to throw up after he had drank that poisoned alcohol down in Mexico by carefully laying down the towel. Sorry for the long comment but I just think it's neat how Vince Gilligan & his producers included all these little things which went a long way in making this show one of the best written shows in TV history.

Jesse snitching led to Hank dying. It’s simple as that. Walt was already out of the business. If Jesse had just left or even talked to Walt at the plaza things would have been different. Walt felt the ultimate betrayal coming from Jesse the one person he consistently cared for through out the whole show. Even more than his own son, Walter Jr.

Hank died because Walt got involved in all this crap in the first place and because he got involved with Neo Nazis of all people. And what? He's out of the business so everything was fine? As shown by what happened, it doesn't work like that. Talk about what? How Walt manipulated him by poisoning a kid to save his ass? Or about the girlfriend he let die as he cruelly threw in his face here? All that makes it hilarious how people see what Jesse did as betrayal. Just because he cared about Jesse didn't mean he was above treating him like shit to get what he wanted.

Technically Jesse has part of the blame for Hank's death too. Not entirely Walt's fault. He went to Hank and talked. Understandable, but that only provoked Walt and things lead to this in the end. They underestimated Heisenberg and Jesse was probably the only one to know that the best, yet he ignored that. Every action had its own conclusion. You can notice that Walt saw Heisenberg in the mirror and turned it away. He couldn't even look at himself when he got in the car. All that sitting on the ground in the dessert probably made him finally realize everything was meant to go south at some point and it took the death of Hank to fully understand it.

Thanos Universe Walt had been manipulating and using Jesse all along from when he poisoned Brock and sent him to the icu to when he tried to get Jesse leave his life behind when hank was onto Walt. He also directly killed Jane(if you rewatch the scene Walt accidentally turns Jane on her back while trying to wake Jesse) and he leaves her to die when he could save her. He didn’t let Jane die because she was threatening him but because he didn’t want to lose Jesse. He also killed Mike(Jesse feels bad for his granddaughter) and all the guys in prison. And Jesse knew he had turned into a different person when he was whistling after that kid Drew Sharp died. It was a long time coming.
