Let me say here and speaker would agree - 1st time chemicals enters in our life is in the form of Pharma industry. Basically its Chemical industry - but after putting cover of health, its valuation goes up! So chemistry is in our life since many decades. Derivatives started later. If people know, certain industrial zones which are running several SME and always been punished or in news due pollution, is this industry as many of them has this as inbuilt outcome, and there goes regulations many countries go with. US and others banned so many such chemicals manufacture in ow country and preferred to make it in China, India etc... !! Understand. This, and you also push developing countries to sign kyoto or Net zero kind protocol. Today many patents are deliberately owned by west world even if the R&D was from India or Indians and we pay huge money to them. .... YES Chemicals are not vast- BUT a Complex subject!! So there is term called Chemical Locha... By the way- you are mixing Chemicals with Petrochemicals. Olefins are still feedstock petrochemical produced from upstream industry products like Natural gas, Ethylene, etc- which are petrochemicals. Once you use these to make further new products they can be called specialty chemicals. Petrochem products are major raw materials for downstream or specialty chemicals. YES, we Indian are lazy to get patents as they lack funds also for R&D, hence chemistry remains in lab only, do not get commercialized!!Finally in terms of Market- eg. A Share of a Paint/coating industry can be cheaper than those chemicals or small intermediates being used to manufacture it... ...... ....sasodekar at gmail dot com
