Chris Fogel is a GRAMMY-winning recording engineer and mixer based in Los Angeles, California. He has had the pleasure of recording and mixing scores and soundtracks for over 170 major motion pictures and television shows, including the Oscar-winning score to Black Panther, as well as The Mandalorian, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tropic Thunder, The Greatest Showman, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Superbad, and many others.
He has also worked with dozens of major recording artists, including Alanis Morissette, Justin Timberlake, U2, Childish Gambino, Nine Inch Nails, Sheryl Crow, Aerosmith, St. Vincent, Jose Gonzalez, and Robbie Robertson. Chris is a GRAMMY nominee as well as a Cinema Audio Society (CAS) nominee. He won each of these awards in 2019 and 2012 respectively.
Chris notably engineered and mixed much of Alanis Morissette’s smash hit record, Jagged Little Pill, alongside Francis Buckley. First released June 13, 1995, the album is celebrating its 25th birthday this year.
Jagged Little Pill was a #1 album in thirteen countries and sold over 33 million copies worldwide. Morissette became the first Canadian artist to achieve a double diamond certification.
Jagged Little Pill was also nominated for a staggering 9 GRAMMYs, winning 5. It won Album of the Year, making Morissette the youngest artist in history to achieve the honor at just 21 years old. She held the record until 2010, when Taylor Swift won this prize with Fearless at the age of 20.
This record was her worldwide debut, as her first two albums were only released in Canada. It was also a stylistic departure from her previous projects, due in part to her collaboration with legendary producer Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Shakira).
The experimentation between herself and Ballard resulted in an alternative rock album influenced by post-grunge and pop rock, and features guitars, keyboards, drum machines, and harmonica. The lyrics touch upon all sorts of relatable themes of aggression and heartache, while Ballard lent a pop sensibility to Morissette’s angst.

It's such a privilege to listen to the people that were involved in creating this huge albums. I remember, I was a child, and Alanis kind of reseted pop culture at the time. it was HUGE. And it still is. When there's talent you can tell. It's crazy that she was so young, she was lucky to find someone who didn't understimate her. I'm from Argentina by the way, she was huge here as everywhere else of course.

Warren, videos like this are so ENCOURAGING to me. Look at how they banged this out - 1st take vocals, throw on this or that. The LACK of obsession over every little thing! The warts and all. God I love it. To think this was one of the best selling records of all time. And why? Because of the songs. Period. And on ADATS? LOL!! Pure confidence, pure belief. She had something to say. She didn't try to make up something to write about. She said something she had to say. That's a song, man. Gives me so much confidence to just record and not constantly question everything. They're just instruments, there's no tricks. I'm listening to it now. It stands up 25 years later. Thank you so much for this video.

During the RHCP 'One hot minute' sessions. I'd say it would be safe to say that Flea and Dave were probably high or tired from partying. All the Chili's were during this era , it's well documented.

I remember when it came out in 1995, it was a huge hit. Pretty amazing how an unknown 19 years old girl from Canada managed to get both Flea and Dave Navarro as performers on her debut album. How is it possible? This is every young musician dream!

Alanis' next album 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie' is arguably her best collection of tracks, would be great to see how those songs came to be, especially in light of following the hugely successful Jagged Little Pill and the amount of pressure that may have had during the recording process.

WOW, I juuuuust re-listened Jagged Little Pill last week, after havent heard in maybe 20 -some-years. Had totally forgotten about it, until I started thinking about my youth. I was 13 when it came out and maaaan, what an album. I may have (french)kissed a girl for the first time at some party while listening to this :-) I get teary eyed and super emotional when I listen to it now! Now, I will go to the studio, take one track at a time and listen to you guys talk about each track in between - can't wait. When I think about it, this album may have been part of shaping my love for record production and thus made me do what I do today...crazy stuff... Just awesome and great timing with this video = thanks, friends!

I just listed to this project this week. An artist we're recording offered it as a reference. @47:30 FWIW I just handled two projects that were transfers from 40-48 tracks of ADAT. The set which were stored in an air conditioned and dark environment fared very well, no discernible errors. I’d love a video all about ADAT and all about the lynn. A complete run through of what it looks like, connected to the desk and recording, what’s done to the signal from that point. Same with the lynn, someone actually using one to write then inputting the signal, etc. Not a boring tutorial covering the function of every knob but how it was used to create an album.

Ps. I love your channel so much! And I've learned a lot watching your videos! In my loving opinion though... Split screen would be SO much better than the way these interviews are being edited. 🙏🏻 We miss out on all the facial expressions when the other person is speaking :( And I know there's gotta be some killer reactions we're not getting to see ;) Then you could focus in on just one speaker every now and then for more impact. You are so excellent in every other area! This is just my opinion though. Hope you have a stellar day!

Such a great discussion! Need Chris back for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and Under Rug Swept by Alanis that would be so cool! Also need Glen Ballard to talk indepth about these albums and their making.

I watched it from the second it was posted and it wasn't available in anything but 360p for at least the first hour, it was kinda appropriate for the timeframe discussed. :D

I think "D4" refers to the Alesis D4 drum machine - although I'm probably wrong! :) I bought one for next to no money last year

Incredible album for sure. You can definitely hear the ADAT though. Listen to "in my tribe" album if you really wanna hear early digital.

Blimey what a fantastic chat and insight. I always feel that a record needs great songs, artists, engineers, producers...but ultimately record label backing is, and perhaps in 1996, the most important part to make it a complete success. Just my thought to it.

That's interesting! For me it's the perfect lesson in make an album without the assistance of a label on the cheap, in those days it would have been the usual suspects Producing and Mixing and the whole life would have been sucked out of it! If the label had been involved at the beginning they would had her working with multiple Producers and Songwriters, instead Alanis was allowed to make an incredible album without them meddling!

@@Producelikeapro Totally agree with you. I always love a successful bands/artists first album because it's most likely who and what they were. What I meant was, without the label aka promotion especially pre Internet, records just sadly don't go places or get heard. But that aside, before all the money stuff, a record has to be made and this story you've talked about in the video is fabulous and goes to show creativity and remaining true to your music/sound is so important. And on your point, I cannot imagine the creativity drainer with having so many people taking over a record. But I guess it happens. Thank you again!

That's crazy the whole record is basically ADAT. Dimebag and Vinnie Paul wanted to do the Great Southern Trendkill entirely on ADAT but Terry Date was like "No, we're not doing that" haha- it's crazy because JLP is such a great-sounding record, I guess it could have worked out pretty well (I also love the King's Chamber reverb I wish there was a good emulation of that!)

This is great! Alanis is so talented, and unique. When she did pop music, she was not a success, but damn! - when she converted to the “indie sound,” she was great. I always loved her live performances because she sounded the same - not digitized. I own all of her albums. I think somewhere in the 90’s, I wrote a letter to Glenn Ballard, but I was no Alanis, so no response. Lol.

Brilliant... many memories of singing, (shouting), along to Ironic. The irony being the subject of the song and my wife of 25 years singing it at each other back then.... 🤣 Many hours spent working out the SMPTE times based on bars using the Engineers’ Cookbook to bounce chorus vocals across 2 24 track Otari machines with the Lynx box. Not frustrating at all.😜 would have been quicker to just sing it! Wouldn’t change it for world!!! 🎛🤘😂

You hear more bass in the "remixed" version. For me, it's the intro that's the giveaway: in the "radio" version, it starts with an organ, and in the "remixed"/Jimmy The Saint blend Flea's bass immediately kicks in. During the instrumental break, you hear Flea's bass starting out softly then picking up before the final verses of the song (before the last chorus). At the end of remixed version, Dave's guitars end the song. Hope this makes sense. :) I don't remember the story behind "Your House" but I'm sure a fellow fan can help.

Those TL Audio C1 compressors were popular in the UK in the 90s, I still occasionally use the Ivory Voice Channel when I want some messiness. My Panasonic DAT machine, not so much.

My phone crashed in the middle of my last attempt to talk about being familiar with DAT. The release of this album was a very weird time where for a few months it seemed like I dropped off the planet. I would catch bits and pieces in the distance while feeling like I was walking on the moon. The rhythms kept me breathing and talking and walking before I could fully register the lyrics. When I finally got up to speed with ordinary life, I thought, "Wow!" Took me about three years to regain my own vocals to reasonable par. A lot of the driven stuff on this and trying to work through the lyrics and keep time with her was the challenge that helped get me back, after a multiple months long respiratory thing. The drum flukes seemed like they were on purpose and spot on, on purpose to me. 😂
