I think we should stop talking about law enforcement like public opinion never matters. I still remember the case where a young British "au pair" admitted to shaking a baby, the baby had injuries, and the baby died of injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, but the judge gave her less time than the baby had lived (time served) after a jury found her guilty of manslaughter _despite mandatory sentencing_. All because the British public was up in arms about getting their little child murderer safely home so she could avoid any punishment and repercussions. And the press took the evidence of prior injury and made it seem as if the parents were guilty, rather than it being a consistent part of a selfish and callous young woman who thought taking care of a baby was going to be an undemanding side gig to fund her American party time. No one in the media even dared outright talk about her guilt, despite the guilty verdict. None of which would have happened if the young woman had been from Mexico, El Salvador, or Nigeria. She probably would have been punished more harshly if she'd just been fat. But being British, white, female, and young, her public appeal meant her guilty verdict had less of an impact on her life than most young African American men suffer for non-violent crimes. If Obama had made it public that Trump was being investigated during the election, Trump would have won the popular vote and the investigation would have been compromised in the eyes of the _vast_ marjority of the public. Supposedly neutral and liberal mainstream media would have heavily covered "both sides," and made it seem like the whole thing being a fabrication was at least a 50/50 chance. Conservative media would have rejected it out of hand as part of Obama's hatred of democracy and "true" patriots like Trump. It would have completely destroyed the investigation in they eyes of the public. It's only happening now because Trump is that unpopular, the evidence is clear and to most people's eyes untainted by association with Obama. And it's still taking a ridiculous amount of time, during which he continues to openly take bribes from foreign entities. Bribes he's unlikely to have to give up. So let's be honest. It's not about investigating to find anything out. It's investigating to get the kind of proof America needs to actually hold a rich white man accountable. If Obama had done even _one_ of the illegal or crazy things that Trump has publicly done while in office, he'd have been impeached and removed from office. So let's stop talking as if this, or any legal process is some kind of impartial administration of justice. There's no such thing. If you want to act morally, you have to account for the fact that appearances drastically change how we apply justice.
