Yes, that's right. Colorado Cyclist and Planet Cyclery are both permanently closed. They are currently running liquidation sales on their remaining inventory.
The closure was announced in April 2024. The company cited increased competition in the online retail space as a significant factor in their decision.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

The Colorado Cyclist catalog was a mainstay in my restroom back in the day. So nice to look at all the Litespeed, Pinarello and Vitus frames while doing my ritual of shedding grams before a morning ride.

Performance/Bike Nashbar were bought by AMain right there in Colorado. Interesting as the failure of them was being way over-extended. It started when the combined company bought SuperGo and it slowly went downhill from there.

Bummer to see them go. I always loved their actual catalogs in the 1990s and I would order over the phone or through the mail when in college. I visited their shop in 2013. Some good people there. Before they announced their closure I scored some Maxxis 29” MTB tires for $39.99. They were OEM stock (no packaging) and it made sense once they announced closure.

The high cost of the upper end bikes and components turned me off over a decade ago. I bought a cheap ($2800.00) dual sport motorcycle and haven’t touched my mountain since.

Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Chris King hubs assembled by Colorado Cyclist, my wheel set of choice, indestructible and delivered to my porch for well under $1K, got three sets right now. A couple years ago I found a very lightly used 1999 Litespeed Tuscany at yard sale price, the Colorado Cyclist sticker on the seat tube just sealed the deal. Part of cycling history gone 😢.

Yep on the wheels. In the 80's they were one the top sources for quality built wheels, especially for us in the hinterlands. Lots of memories of their catalogs and playing "If money was no object" fantasy games in my head.

Sad to see the bike store icon Colorado Cyclist go. Planet Cyclery on the other hand, couldn't be bothered to look into the order that fell into a black hole after they supposedly shipped it, so I'll return the lack of concern in kind.

The only question remains, can I trust buying a high ticket item from them right now? If I have a problem I'll be on my own left out in the cold. Probably not worth being tempted by the large savings I see.

There are more bicycle brands, then I know people, you only have one rear end, how many bikes can you buy and store in a lifetime, there's too many brands some of them have to go.

Waiting for the higher end stuff to actually go on sale still. I hate to see them close shop but 30-40 percent off stuff that’s not highly sought after won’t help all that much.
