While we often talk about the "theology of the Church," the diversity of perspectives throughout our history suggests it might be more appropriate to speak of the "theologies of the Church."

I might argue that there isn’t much “wrong” with any of the three approaches? I’m not theologically trained Father Casey.... I just read. A lot. For a dyed in the wool Protestant, I read entirely too much Catholic theology. At least according to some opinions. I’m not really sure reading too much theology is possible.

@@BreakingInTheHabit Child, you do not understand two (2) realities: (1) In the Bible the Christian "Kingdom of Heaven" (the church) consists of BOTH unsaved "tares/goats" who were sown by Satan and are destined to eternal torment and relatively few saved "wheat/sheep/saints" who were sown by God and are destined to eternal life. So THAT is the Biblical definition of "the church" [Mat 13] ------------ (2) In the Bible "the church" began during the lifetime of the Lord and Apostles. The "church" did not begin in 300AD. To pretend the Catholic denomination is "the church" is so naive it is PAINFUL. If fact, the RCC teaches many different heresies. ------------ Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. --------------- (3) The "church" is NOT the "Body of Christ" because, as we have seen in #1... in the broader sense "the church" contains BOTH "wheat and tares" while the "Body of Christ" contains ONLY the "wheat". ------------------- Your preaching (or theology) is sloppy at best. If you do not DEFINE the CONTEXT of "the church" then anything and everything you say can ONLY be a partial-truth. ------------------- It would be better if FIRST you explained the church consists of BOTH "wheat and tares" and SECOND you define whether you are talking about ONLY the "wheat" (the "Body of Christ" or if you are talking about the temporal "church" which contains both saved "wheat" and unsaved "tares" ------------ This is very basic and essential theology child.... I wonder why it seems to be "news" to you? -------------

I love this video. It highlights a facet that I encountered when looking at different theories of atonement (Ransom, Satisfaction, Penal Substitution) to respond to Muslim challenges to Christianity. My conclusion was that what Christ accomplished on the cross was probably much too great to fit into one single theory and that all of them found their basis in Scripture and were valid ways of looking at different aspects of atonement and propitiation. I find that in my personal study of Scripture I do lean toward category A, although lately I have become fascinated with how God has worked throughout history, especially how He uses the actions of pagan nations to accomplish His purposes. It is in worship that I find myself most inclined toward category B. Thank you for providing your insight and perspective in these videos!

I'm definitely gravitating towards C-- I'm a really introspective and sensitive person so knowing that Yeshua was human and understands my trials and the trials of the world intimately is really powerful for me. I grew up Anglican, and there is a HUGE emphasis there on reconciliation and healing and forgiveness between people that were once opposed, even violently, but now through the power of Christ are being brought into a new life in communion together with Him. But I definitely see the value in the other two as well. God bless :)

I'd like to think that God is the one that guide us and put us into the right group. We just have to pray to Him and ask for guidance, so when we r in the right group we can do His job the best way... It just through praying that we will find the group we belong. I think for God we r in a big group but in different tables... This is a good way to make people think about their own faith... God bless you my dear. Keep making cracks in people's hearts... The most basic approach by the law is the hardest : human needing to be in an favorable environment to be able to live as God intend for us. So in my perspective you take strength in the B to work for the C to make the world (and yourself) ready for the A.

Roseann Sorrentino St. Augustine is actually a Father of the Church, being that he was around in the 4th century, whereas Aquinas came around much later. The incredible thing about Augustine is that he did not have all of the Fathers of the Church (being that he was one of them) to educate him on the doctrine... He had to formulate largely from scratch all of his work (the Greek philosophers). He was a significant contributor to the actual making of doctrine, and is considered by many to be the greatest theologian/philosopher of the Western Christian world; his ideas and work majorly influenced a ton of Aquinas’ teachings.

From my experience, the dark sides of all three types. A can become too legalistic, B can become too static, while C could become too contingent or subjective. Luz Clara Good question. I’m not sure if there is a singular “strategy” of evangelization (nor do I think that there is a book that will convince someone.) For me, people don’t become Christians because they’ve lost an argument; they become Christian because they’ve witnessed the love of Christ.
@luzclara3855

Yes, dearest Brother Casey. That is so, indeed. You are right. But books often begin the process (and prayer). In order to recommend a book to start with, it helps to know the person's background or worldview. There is no point in recommending the story of conversion of an Atheist, if the person is Protestant, for example. :) I have been watching tons of videos about personal conversions, and often one or two books were involved (the most common, for former Atheists, usually were "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis, and "Orthodoxy" by Chesterton; and for Protestants, it had often been "Rome Sweet Rome" by Dr. Scott Hahn). Books make people start thinking, questioning preconceptions and begin seeking for the truth. As they are searching for it, inevitably they find and finally recognize Love. As people seek with an honest heart, they have an encounter with Jesus.

Fr Casey, can you please explain the “structure” of how Christians are to follow the writings of the Bible? Are we to subscribe exclusively to the teachings of Jesus as he is the beginnings of the new faith? I have always assumed the Old Testament as a reference, a somewhat rewriting of the testament of and for the Jewish people. I see frequently alternate sects that are still called Christians, but not subscribing to the Pope, using dramatic passages of the Old Testament intermingled with Gospel and the other Letters and Acts etc as similar to cherry picking. I am forgetting why the readings in the mass from the Old Testament are present beyond highlighting the coming gospel reading. Can you explain how we should properly be utilizing these two “halves” of the Bible? What is the place of the Old Testament with Catholics?
@stephenbenner4353

In Ephesians 3:18 Paul talks about knowing the live of Christ together. With an infinite love from an infinite God it will take the Church all eternity to search it out, and each one of us has our own slightly different perspective from which we see God. This is one reason we meet together, to tell one another of the love of Christ and to encourage and build one another up and to know God better and better. For one Christian, God’s healing power may be the attribute that they see most clearly, while for another He is hope in the midst of depression, or the savior from death, the deliver from bondage to sin, or the giver of more abundant life. Those are all attributes of God, and maybe some of us don’t experience them the same because we are not all weak in the same areas, but God’s power is made perfect in our weakness, his glory is made known in his creation, and as he builds his church it will be ever greater as we learn the fullness of God together.

These days well meaning traditionally minded folks think a theology of law (staunch Thomism) is the only acceptable theology, but forget that for the first 1200 years of Church history Thomism hadn't existed yet! Rather, a real traditionalist will incorporate the "theology of truth" in the Patristic age, the "theology of law" of St. Thomas and Trent, AND a "theology of history" found in someone like Pope St. John Paul II.

If only one viewpoint was correct, the need for congregation would be diminished. Even the twelve that walked side by side with God Incarnate held varying perspectives.

Br. Casey, touching on Type A theology particularly, what are you thoughts on the "fate of the unlearned"? I read that such individuals can be saved if they would desire baptism had knowledge of it been made available to them. But in that case, they're still not exposed to the Eucharist, which we're taught is necessary for spiritual life. Can you offer some clarification here?

Plumface-sama Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 846-848, “Outside the Church there is no salvation” The short answer is that God created his sacraments for us, but is not bound by them Himself (we are but not Him).

Why St. Thomas Aquinas was the greatest theologian of all time is because he was not caught up in any of these categories. What St. Thomas did was follow God and was inspired by Him through prayer, fasting, and reading the Gospels. That is why St. Thomas was usually correct in what he taught.

No, actually, Thomas’ theology is thoroughly type A. And that’s fine. It’s doesn’t diminish him or his theology, but he is a major defining figure for that type of theology.

Type B seems like Eastern Religion, but it is not negative in sense.. The Church (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestan) needs theology that fits with actual problems of today: poverty, religious extremism/fundamentalism, science development, environmental damage/climate change, LGBT rights, internet of things. 3 types of theologians you offer still don't quite enough to tackle those problems.

Type A - Danger of being like a Pharisee. Type B - Very Greek perspective. Type C - Partially founded in the Book of James, with our faith reflected by our works. Type D - Our Trinity God is like Neapolitan ice cream. 😁

“There is only one truth”. We people have been seeded with this approach but it is far from what is and should be. There will always be multiple truths and attached with them are our own subjective views and with those are other people’s subjective views. They will always have worldliness in them. I think, we are given too short of a worldly life for us to be able to reveal the fullness of all truths. So here is where I stand. We should always be open to other truths but it doesn’t mean we should accept them all. We should not stop seeking the truth but as we seek we should focus on nourishing and nurturing our Faith, respecting ourselves and not harm our neighbors. What do you guys think?

When we say "There is only One Truth" we are refering to the Public Revelation of God which is truth itself. If you say that there are multiple truts (religiously/philosophically) you are falling in the same posmodern relativism that Benedict XVI criticises. However, you can say that there are multiple truths outside Revelation, in other fields, like science and art, where nothing is irrefutable as everything depends on our empirical observations, our senses and our points of view.

"A"is the approach of moral theology. "B", as described by Brother Casey here, is a very poor and vague description of mystical theology. Mystical theology has its place----I highly recommend St. John of the Cross's books, St. Teresa of Avila's messages, and Scott Hahn's books----but mystical theology as described by Brother Casey is just a bunch of watery slop. "C" is good if it means that the Church is a city on a hill, as described by St. Augustine.
