UPDATE: I figured this out, I changed the light source from Florescent to LED and it removed the issue, since most people use ND filters outside I can see why no one has had this issue before. Thanks for helping.

Newton's Rings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_rings Please not that the article says this is caused by the combination of a convex glass and a flat glass. That is correct, but the necessary curvature is actually very very small, as the article later says: "the pattern is created by placing a very slightly convex curved glass on an optical flat glass. " In fact, this problem is known in microscopy and film enlargers where the two glass surfaces are supposed to be perfectly flat, but the inherent flatness imperfection is enough to cause this effect.

The technical term for these is Newton's rings. Bad lens construction or possibly bad quality control in the construction. These could be caused by the lens glass sandwich having an air gap in it. These rings happen when the air gap is near the wavelength of light and slight variations in the surface profiles of the glass - possibly due to slight variation in the surface tension when the glass was cooling in the manufacturing process. You could probably enhance seeing these by looking though the filter/lens with polarising sunglasses.

Oh wow thanks for all this great info, I will give that a try.

Yes, you typically see this alot when looking through polarized lenses onto tempered glass - like a car windshield. It does have to do with the differing tension or stress on glass or even the laminate (if there is one in the ND filter). Potentially your lenses are bringing this out of the filter.

Thank you for the update. I’m going to purchase the Breakthrough 15 stop ND filter soon.

LOL WHAT 15 STOP ND Filter? Breakthrough is pissed at me know because they have not updated ANYTHING and I keep asking for a 6, 10, and 15. If you can find one on their webpage, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I have their other CPL and love them.

Those rings are a constructive interfere pattern from internal reflections inside the thickness of the filter. Probably just a bad combination of coatings that is too shiny on the inside surface, or maybe one or both is coming delaminated a little bit.

I think you are right but I’m trying to think of ways to test for this.

hmmm, I have breakthrough x4 nd's, good to know, I will have to test this. It could be the lighting/color temperature. Nd's are designed for outdoors, and different nd filters have different color spectrums/frequencies

We'll, I'm late to the party. We used to use baby powder in our 8x10 enlarger when glass pressed to glass. It worked.

I had the same issue with the Platinum Variable ND that Best Buy sells, it only happens sometimes and not in all situations. Happens definitely when I shoot with a window or some sort of digital screen in the shot, i get a green/purple fringe type pattern but it looks more like oil than actual moire, just like yours did.

Very interesting, Dave. Nice video, as always. In my beginnings I bought some variable ND filter they had in the shop. It was not cheap at all, but I thought any brand would do the trick. Boy, was I wrong... I noticed not only a huge contrast reduction, but also sharpness and even some flares here and there when sunny! Since then I learned that ND filters are as important as everything else, and I only purchase the ones with the best reviews, like Hoya. And not variable.

Same happened with my filter when I tried to clean it with too much cleaning liquid. I'm not saying this is 100% your case...

I noticed something similar happening from the X2 UV Filter I put on my Sony 28mm f2 lens. I also have an X2 UV for my 85mm f1.8 that did not have the same problem. I also assumed it was a bad copy and sent it back. I didn't end up keeping the 28mm f2... so I can't really answer the question just yet. I really want to test out the X4 filters but they're so much more expensive. Not sure if they're worth the extra cost.

Hello Dave, thanks for this review. I am curious to know if you tested the Breakthrough ND filter for Bokeh? In your other ND filter shootout it was apparent the Heliopan rendered bokeh with the least amount of texture. I was primarily needing an ND filter to shoot wide open with certain lenses so this aspect is important for me. Would you have any bokeh rendition and sharpness info on the Breakthrough ND filter compared to the Heliopan? Thank you!
