As an Advanced Oxygen Advantage instructor breath holding is one of the fundamental principle I teach and use as a coach to help improve carbon dioxide (CO2) tolerance which is often negatively impact by poor breathing habit and over breathing patterns.

Hi Jacko! Thanks for the great service being rendered. I am a newbie on this subject but I can learn fast. 😁 First doubt: what is the optimal interval between the 5 strong and challenging breath holds? Thanks.

Hey! Glad you are engaging in the subject of breathwork and yes the 5 challenging breath holds (but not stressful) are great with about 1-2 mins recovery between as a basic starting point. But remember to build up gradually with some easy warm ups

Top info right here. I really don't know how to breath during exercise and it really takes a toll on my (amateur) performance. This of course comes from not breathing correctly for my entire life + smoking + no exercise. I would also enjoy some more info about Jacko's rugby career. Keep it up

I'm planning on doing a video as nasal breathing in exercise as well as sharing a bit more about my rugby career if people will find it interesting for sure. In short, played 13 years of pro rugby, had many head injuries and ended in 2013 after 300+ games with a seizure on the training field due to final head injury.

Hi, thanks for the video, very informative. I have two questions though: 1) Why is it necessary to pinch the nose? I find it much easier to just hold my breath without pinching the nose. 2) How do low oxygen levels induced by breath-holds compare with altitude training when the first is just a temporary drop while the latter is a constant state of low oxygen? Thanks
@Jacko-Breathwork
@Jacko-Breathwork 3 жыл бұрын
hey glad it helps and great questions. So to answer; 1) Pinch the nose means that we keep the nitric oxide that is create by the sinuses in the nasal cavity rather than seeping out so that when we breathing in through the nose after the breath hold we take the nitric oxide into the upper airways as a vasodilator. 2) The research as shown a maximal contraction of the spleen after 5 strong and challenging breath holds after 30s. The key seems to be the length of time over 30 seconds and needs to be challenging. Compared to altitude training at actual altitude the big difference is we can easily do the 5 breath holds each day in the comfort of our own home and research suggest that we can see an increase of 2 to 5% in red blood cell count and haemoglobin % over time. Hope that makes sense? J A C K O

Very well explained Jacko! Thanks for the video. In the OA book Patrick says to do 8-10 breath holds, but you’re saying 5 is enough, correct? I often do 2-3 short ten minute walks each day. Do you think I’d see faster results by doing breath holds multiple times per day?
@Jacko-Breathwork
@Jacko-Breathwork 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, depends on what the exercise is in terms of how many breath-holds you do in a set but typically the research shows that spleen contraction peaks at 5 strong breath holds of 30 seconds or more... this is research that Patrick quotes in our training too, so just to confirm it not conflicting to what he says - he taught me!!!

I'm really glad to have found your video. So well explained. Can you tell me if it is dangerous to have a saturation below 80% during this type of exercice? I read that in an article. Guylaine Doucet (from Canada)

I’m glad it helps.. for breath-holds simulating altitude training for sports performance benefits then we want to get SpO2 into the 80%’s - that equivalent to 4-5,000m of altitude… but for fit and health athletes. Not if pregnant or have any heart conditions or on medication

Hi Jacko , how many times should we do these breath holds or is it just once and should it be a daily thing as well or every few days ? Thanks John
@Jacko-Breathwork
@Jacko-Breathwork 3 жыл бұрын
Great question John, ideally once per day for long term benefits and up to 5 challenging but not stressful breath holds... build up with some warm up reps for 10-20 steps and no benefits to doing more than 5 so the research says. That help?

Hello. So, I decided to try out doing breath holds every morning right as I wake up and clean myself. Yesterday in all 5 rounds I held my breath for 30 seconds. This time in the first round it is 25 seconds. Why did it decrease?

Hi Mate. Right. Can I ask your advice mate. I'm an M. E. Sufferer. I get breathless if I walk too far. I'm on a new raw vegan, diet. So I'm flushing, cleaning my cells out. Now I want to get my body's ability to take in more oxygen and use it. So should I do just 5 breath holds of just 10 secs? Everyday? Then increase it by say 2 seconds every 10 days or 2 weeks? I'm an x academic, guy I'm going to be very careful. But I think this can improve my health. Many thanks Richard
