Although Mipha's story is tragic, the beauty of her story is that she ended up doing exactly what she wanted. Through Mipha's grace, she gets to protect and heal link, even in death. Perhaps the best ending for her outside of her actually marrying link.

The Diary Entries were really interesting and gave me a whole new impression on the characters. Revali for example. Before the DLC Revali was just a full of himself, jealous and selfcentered part of the old champion group to me. I thought there is nothing more to him but after reading his diary I got the feeling that he was actually kinda interested in Link. Revali was a proud and strong warrior and so was Link. Maybe he was even trying to get a bit closer to him as a fellow companion. He mentions how he actually tried to talk with him while Zelda was away and how he got no reaction at all. He then even starts to provoke him in order to get some kind of respond. In the end he sounds frustrated and flies off to his Divine Beast - fleeing from the situation. I actually felt sorry for Revali afterwards.

I think the funny part here is the fact that link and mipha actually argued when they were heading up the mountain. He at least had some emotions, and with mipha's personality this would've been hilarious and heartbreaking to watch.

I can't help but feel bad for Mipha. She never got a chance to tell Link her feelings herself. It just went untold and she passed on without him really knowing. Then 100 years after her death, the hero finally finds out. He has no clue if the old Link would have excepted her feelings because now he's a different dude. He just has to live the rest of his life wondering what would have happened if she had gotten the chance to tell him, and it's heartbreaking, as much as I don't ship them, still, it's sad. And the fact that Mipha saw Link change in the way of never smiling, is too, heartbreaking. To see the one you love not happy is terrible. But In this case, Mipha didn't even know what he was feeling anymore because he was so silent and emotionless. She then has to go on hoping that he's okay. And I kind of hope he didn't have feelings for Mipha, as cruel as it sounds because then he would have been even more heartbroken at her death. ...I guess I have Link all to myself now... hehehe...

Well done! Mipha's unrequited love is definitely tragic. It was interesting to see Nintendo present the story this way instead of the comically absurd way Ruto loved Link in OoT. That was definitely "I have a crush on this guy, but I'm too nervous to say anything" behavior. I loved it!

I feel that Mipha had so much potential to be an awesome character, but i feel that her whole personality revolved around loving link, and if you were to take that away, she wouldn’t have much of one. Ok, two bits of evidence you 100% glossed over: There's a Zora girl you can talk to at Zora's Domain that literally tells Link how she was jealous of him and Mipha, and even made him pick between her and Mipha (implying another love triangle) and he picked Mipha. Then, there's the dialogue option with King Dorephan where Link says that he and Mipha are "united, now" which isn't something you about a platonic relationship to the father who knows she was in love with you...

Never once in my entire life did i think I would see Toradora referenced when talking about Legend of Zelda.

It seemed more to me like they really liked each other, but with the war quickly approaching, they made this silent agreement not to pursue a relationship and possibly divide their attention from what is important. It's not uncommon for people to put their whole personal lives on hold during a tough time, and both Link and Mipha were very focused on trying to save Hyrule.

The depressing ending that we don’t want to hear could have gone like this. Mipha proposed to link and link learned to love her after that. I think it would make sense that their love would evolve into something so strong and it would be the strongest right before the battle with calamity Ganon. In the chaos of the battle, link would somehow learn of miphas tragic death and he would fight Ganon but he would be heartbroken and lose the fight because of this. Zelda would learn that he lost the battle for that reason and would purposely wipe his memory and let him heal for a hundred years so he can come back focused to kill Ganon. ( Zelda could also end up jealous). These events would also explain why a lot of characters try not to explain too much about links past once they learn he lost his memory becausethey also knew how tragic it was for links lover to die in battle. THAT is a depressing story of Zelda that I would rather like and would cry to Honestly and it fits nicely into the story

Link visits Zoras domain on the regular, it’s like how as a kid you’d go to your grandparents house, for link Zoras domain was like that. And Mipha obviously has some feelings before if she was arguing with him, she may have said things like “You’ll get hurt!” And link must have said stuff like “I’ll be fine!” Meaning she had cared for him a lot. And she did say to link “I was always willing to heal your wounds.” Meaning she healed him often.

I completely agree. Very well made and it summed up my feelings about the scenario in a nutshell, from the iconic Japanese love triangle to the ironic foreshadowing of Ruto's love. Just one more thing I would add would be that creator Aonuma said in an interview after the DLC release that Mipha's love, while deep, was "similar to a mother's love towards her child." If this holds true, then Link would view her as a motherly figure rather than a love interest. It also lines up with the aging differences. Mipha says Link grew before her eyes from a child to a young man, while she, as Zora's age much slower, remained very much unchanged. Meeting her at age four, it is more likely that Link saw her as a loving mother from that age and continued to view her in that light, as she hasn't changed much. This also plays into the Japanese love triangle, as the childhood friend option is almost always described by the main protagonist as a doting mother or older sister to them. And just in case anyone says comparing Breath of the Wild to anime is like comparing apples to oranges, the directors have confirmed that anime was a source of inspiration to the game. Regardless, this was very well made and professional, and I hope you create more in the coming future.

Me when playing botw at first: i must save zelda Me after van ruta: I must avenge my dead waifu

One of the most tragic things is that i feel Mipha knew, from the start, that Link would never be with her no matter how hard she wished he could. Link was destined to become the hero and protect Zelda and, since she mentions the legend referencing Ocarina of Time, she must know how it ended, which gives another explanation as to why she never told him. The armor could then be seen as a last effort by her to have Link stay with her, which makes it even sadder.

I wanna be totally honest: you asked if that heartbreak is what we would want? Yes I personally would have loved to get that memory back, imagine instead slowly getting memories back as you walk through and around zoras domain and then when given the armor link has a flashback to mipha handing the armor to him and him accepting it and her feelings only to lose her hours later because he was protecting Zelda.

[very long, proceed at your own risk] before champion's ballad i too believed that it would have been possible, in due time, for link to develop feelings for mipha, or that they might have already been there, subconsciously, and that it was only a matter of time (and without evil pig king interfering) before link realized it. after playing CB though, i no longer believe that's the case, or at least not as likely. this video was pretty great and i have no complaints about any of the arguments, so i'm only adding on a couple of points you didn't mention, but that i deemed important in realizing why link never had any romantic feelings for mipha. from reading mipha's diary, the first and most important thing i realized is that link and mipha were nowhere near as close as i thought they were. before CB i genuinely thought link had lived in zora's domain for some time, considering how not only mipha, but many of the other zoras spoke to him as if he was one of them. in mipha's diary though, we see that link never lived in zora's domain and only visited occasionally. long periods of time pass between his visits, and while they may not seem as long for a zora, entire periods of link's childhood and adolescence go by between each visit. in short, she's not really a constant in his life, but more like that aunt of cousin you see every few years at a family gathering. this changes slightly once he becomes champion, as more visits are mentioned, but there wasn't enough time for them to grow much closer. this is even supported by the fact that mipha explicidly only starts developing feelings for him after he saves her from the lynel, and before she'd never really thought about it. before CB i'd also seen people mentioning that mipha making the zora armor meant that her and link were already engaged, but that point has been disproven in CB, as we see mipha spontaneously deciding to craft the armor without link even knowing anything about it. this armor equally speaks volumes about how sporadic mipha's feelings for link were in general. she immediately starts gathering materials for the armor not long after she realized that she loves link, and she doesn't even know how he feels at that point. her family even hyped her up on the idea, as especially her father was very welcoming of the idea of mipha marrying link because of the legend of ruto falling for the hero of time. but she does mention in her diary about how she's insecure about whether or not she should give the armor to link, suggesting that she knows, in a sense, how out of the blue all of this is. she mentions that she plans on giving the armor to him on top of ruta at sunset of his next visit, and we even see the outcome of this, as that is one of link's original memories in the game (mipha's touch). considering how the armor is still in zora's domain 100 years later, we know that mipha backed out of her resolution, and never gave link the armor like she'd wanted to. this indicates a certain degree of insecurity, that she doesn't know how link might react to it and doesn't want to risk shoving some possibly unwanted feelings at him. then there's the things mentioned in mipha's diary that outright confirm that link doesn't feel about mipha the way she feels about him. as others have mentioned, when mipha tries asking link what's wrong, he won't tell her and just shrugs it off. when zelda, however, asks him the same question, it takes him a moment, but he does open up to her eventually. there could be other reasons for that, but the game developers wouldn't add this parallel in both zelda's and mipha's diaries if they didn't want us to notice that. in short, he becomes more comfortable with zelda than he ever was with mipha. this doesn't need to have romantic connotations, but it's definitely something the developers wanted us to realize. thus, from the realization that their friendship wasn't nearly as deep as one might think, to mipha's own hesitation in coming forward with her feelings, to link's inability to open up with her the way he does with zelda, i personally believe that link has probably never seen mipha as anything but an old friend, while mipha may have been blinded by his image of a knight in shining armor and the legends of the zora princess falling in love with a hylian.

10:59 it's says that when mipha noticed he didn't talk as much anymore that she asked him why he changed but he told mipha that nothing was wrong, but in Zelda's diary it says that zelda noticed link didn't talk much and when zelda asked link why he didn't talk much he told her the truth and why he didn't talk much, unlike when mipha had asked him.

Idk why I’m getting this recommended now but in Hyrule Warriors age of calamity there is that one scene where mipha tells Daruk she wants to train and looks at link saying she wants to “fight alongside” and trails off as link looks at her and starts walking towards her she gets all flustered and stuff so I think link knew she was in love with him and was maybe curious about her but before they could really explore anything she dies 🤷🏽‍♀️ in a different timeline they might have ended up together if she actually had the chance to ask him to marry her before she died

Why else would Mipha make the armor for Link unless she loves him, and in the cutscene “Mipha’s Touch” and Mipha was flirting with him he didn’t seem to mind when they were sitting so close together.

A labor of Love is often unrequited. The armour's construction was an exercise not in futility, but an exercise in passion. And it so happened to help Link later on. In that, the armour is Mipha's gift of constant protection.

Sidon recalls link spending a considerable time with mipha. You forgot that bit. He could still care about mipha it just wasn't given a bigger backstory since Nintendo still hasn't given any real backstory to any of the characters other than Zelda

I ran into this as I was playing, the Zora who runs the inn, Kodah, also loved link and had asked him to choose between her and mipha, which could imply that she was sure that Link liked Mipha in some way.

I haven't played the DLC but the writing of the main story made it pretty clear to me that Link didn't feel the same way. And I think Mipha knew that. When she talks about spending time together, and hoping things could go back to the way they were when they were children, it was clear to me that she did feel the distance between them. She's hoping she'll get a chance to have him fall in love with her. She made the armor because she was so confident in her love that she could change his heart. I don't know, that's just how I read into it. Late to the video but still wanted to share.

I feel like there’s a bit of evidence you’re missing here. It may not change the outcome, but I thought I would mention it, since you didn’t bring it up. There are moments where we hear of instances where Mipha and Link were sort of “dating”, Link was spending a lot of time with Mipha, and Sideon even goes so far as to say Link “may have become his brother-in-law.” Granted, we don’t know exactly when this happens, but I would think it happened on his second trip to Zora’s Domain, when Link was older and mature, shortly after the Divine Beasts were dug up. Do his feelings change? Did they exist in the first place? I don’t know, but the story that felt most satisfying for me was “Link has feelings toward Mipha all the way up to the Great Calamity, but becomes closer to Zelda the more they work together. He puts these feelings aside and focuses on his job as the Princess’s knight, and as a Champion, working alongside Mipha and the others. After the Great Calamity, with everyone dead, he has no time to sort out his feelings, as he and Zelda are attacked by hordes of Guardians. He sacrifices himself to save Zelda, and when he wakes up, his memories are gone. He recoveres all his memories, saves Zelda, and ultimately falls in love with her. Mipha supports this herself, essentially “releasing” Link and telling him to move on and live his life without worrying about her, because he would always have her support, friendship, and love from afar."

I think Links feeling are always flat for other characters just because i believe that Link is supposed to represent the player (thats what nintendo said dunno if it still holds true but his name was chosen as the "link" between player and world) so in many ways its pretty much like after the game is done in your own canon you choose your love interest because you are link.

I really hope that they show and explain more of all the champion's backstory's especially Mipha.

Update: Zelda Tears of The Kingdom is coming out in 6 days. Now let’s go to Hyrule Warriors. Like Breath of the Wild the quests in the Japanese version are also Link’s diary. In one of the quests where you bring luminous stones for Mipha’s ceremony Link states, “she looked more beautiful than usual”. Maybe more will be revealed in TOTK but we won’t know. there is a diolog that confirms that mipha dindt show the armor to link. when you beat the waterblight on the dlc a few times there is a time mipha asks link not to read her diary cause she clearly would be embaraced if he discovered what she wrote obout him

So I got the game for Christmas and was playing it for my first time and I came across a zora NPC named Kodah who around 9pm hangs around the inn at the Zora domain and she said when I asked who she was is " A hundred years ago, I asked you... To choose between me and Mipha. I...I'm sorry about that. Now I am married to...........". IDK if it means anything but just thought I'd point it out.

The final thing he said and i quote "If Link had lived a normal life without the pressure put on him, he most definitely would have fallen in love with her". Made me so happy to hear :) This is a good conclusion, and as a Miphlink shipper, i can accept that :)
