Art Deco was an international decorative style that ran from 1919 to 1939 through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, including how people look (clothing, fashion and jewelry). The actual term art déco did not appear in print until 1966, in the title of the first modern exhibition on the subject, held by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
Howard and Jo Anne Melton’s compact collection focuses on the art deco period through companies Elgin American, J.M. Fisher, and more!

I'm currently on a train in Sydney watching this. I just had an elderly lady tap me on the shoulder, and she she said, "Oh, Ive got some compacts from back then "! She opened her bag, and showed me the most beautiful compact. If I hadn't been watching, I never would've seen it! And, yes, it WAS from the 1920's!

Things were made with great care back then and the enamel artists were masters of their trade. Enamel holds up very well through the ages so it's not such a mystery why these compacts look so splendid 100 years after they were made.

I know it was very interesting 🤔 I have a lot of books regarding material culture of the time but usually getting more into granular everyday items like a compact and it’s individual evolution in time really reveals a lot about women, society and cosmetics than is explicitly written. Hearing from the collectors and Erin was interesting and I look forward to my book in the mail 😁

Erin, you are such a gracious human. The respect you show to the people you interview is a breath of fresh air. You do your research, you've read their books, and ask such well thought out questions. When she says "This is so much fun, no one is ever interested in our compacts!" just shows how much joy you bring to so many. In April of 2001 I went to England and Scotland with my hubby. We were staying in Covington Gardens for a few days and made a visit to Harrods which is an awe inspiring adventure. I mean it's beyond huge with so many levels! We found ourselves on a floor that had perfumes, make up, lots of things and I saw these Estée Lauder compacts in a case. They had come out as a series of 4 fairies and I fell in love with the green fairy. But it was 300 pounds! Back in 2001 that was mighty pricey and since we had saved up for years to make this vacation happen I knew it was too expensive to buy. But, out of the blue, my husband asked me which fairy did I fancy. I told him and he bought it for me! Such a rare treat and such a kind and loving gift. That was my first compact and I have a collection of Estee Lauder compacts now bought through Bay auctions. But there is a caution about EL compacts being produced in the last 10-15 years where some compacts are decorated with plastic gemstones instead of quality Swarovski crystals. Buyer, beware. AND, sorry this is so long - thank you for this video. It makes me sad knowing those lovely art deco compacts are out of reach for my budget but I can always take pictures of my favorites.

I know where to offer anything I come across that's vintage makeup related... It's nice to see someone who is so passionate about a topic and draws ppl into the topic as well.... Someone who doesn't know about our care about makeup would absolutely be drawn into the topic just by your genuine passion and curiosity

The designs are so beautiful. With art deco you get so many different vibes; Native American, Japanese and French. The compacts are incredible.

Great video! I love when people collect and share, not only what they've acquired but the knowledge and history they learned in the process. Jo Anne's so excited to be sharing this with Erin. "Do you know how much fun this is? No one ever wants to see our compacts" When you boil it down, that's all it is. the essence of a collector, the ultimate geeking out and fangirling moment. I love seeing collectors gather and talk about their passions and getting excited and all hyped together. I would love to watch more videos like this. I loved the intimate feel and vibe of this interview. Thank you Erin for the amazing video! Thank you Howard and Jo Anne for sharing your collection with us!💖💖💖

I love learning the history, behind these gorgeous pieces. Also, I love that you are sharing your knowledge with everyone. I feel like I got a sneak peek, into someone's treasures. I've always wanted to collect vintage makeup and beauty products, but didn't really know where to look or where to start. Compacts, tick all the boxes for me and I'm gonna start saving my pennies now. Perfume bottles, have always caught my eye too. When my Grandma passed, we found a HUGE collection of Avon perfume/ cologne bottles. I knew she had a few on her vanity that I always admired, but I didn't know she had such a huge collection stored away. My Grandma's vanity, started my love of makeup and beauty products. I remember sitting at her vanity, being amazed at all the pretty things she had. She would have liked your videos, as much as I do. 💛

This is the absolute sweetest most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life!!! Growing up my father and step mother collected all types of things like literally all different kinds of toys and what knots and we used to go to toy shoes EVERY weekend and all their friends would ask if I was allowed to actually open my toys like out of the boxes, and I can remember I was probably in 2nd grade and I bought a cabbage patch doll with my own money and my father was furious when i pierced her ears lmao because she lost value but this is the type of beautiful things that I loved to see collected and together and the history of it all ❤❤

It's so wonderful to see people's passion. You can see the joy in both their eyes (and yours) when you discuss something you love. It's an exquisite collection and I may be heading to my library to find that book and give it a read!

Thank you Howard and Joanne! I marveled at all the tiny works of art in your collection 😮 and greatly appreciate your having shared them with us. I hope one day in the far distant future, these beauties are destined for a museum so that the public can admire the creativity, workmanship and ingenuity that went into each miniature masterpiece.

Howard and Joann, thank you, both, so much for allowing us to see you amazing compacts and sharing your knowledge of them. I could spend days looking at this collect! I wish were a museum to house some of the compacts. I have loved compacts since I was a small child. My twin sister, and I, each, received small Avon compacts for Christmas in 1976. A life long love affair began.
