Biology IS amazing!

Had a similar genetics course in college. One of the batches of fruit flies was apparently much more delicate than usual because we came in one day and all but one jar for that strain had completely died out. It threw off the entire project because now every group had to use the offspring from that jar to cross breed and there weren't enough for every group to get multiple flies. So some groups only got one and had to pray that it would mate in the jar before dying.

My high school used to do this, breed fruit flies for different eye colours. But every year it filled the school with escaped fruit flies so it was discontinued.

Interesting idea in theory. My concern would be needing a pollinator for the vines to produce berries. Unless you try pollinating by hand. This sounds like something that would be interestingly fun to try!

Yeah like violetwinged said, you won't get berries without pollination, so the challenge would lie in finding a suitable pollinator that can also survive in the closed ecosystem.

Many small flies can pollinate flowers, you would just need several more species of tiny flies and a dwarf fruit-producing plant.

Get a fishtank and silicone a piece of glass on top to seal it closed. Could maybe throw in some butterflies as pollinators??

@@jessicar4873 That is a cool idea, but even the tiniest butterflies wouldn’t work. They are too delicate and rely too much on year-round flowers and fresh air. Many other smaller, tougher bugs (tiny beetles and/or flies) would be better. A completely sealed 30+ gallon tank would be amazing!

How inbred do they look

@@ChrisPBacon-jl7oc they were wingless to start with, but interestingly, I've found very few changed traits. The dark colored banding on their abdomen has become thicker. The middle of their thorax is white or tannish, and the top of the thorax near the head is dark. Interestingly, a good portion of the population has no dark banding at the top of the thorax. Some of their bodies are twice as long as other flies, and some have completely white bodies, although that's probably a result of recent pupation. I'll isolate a few white individuals to see if it's really because their exoskeletons are still hardening, and I'll keep observing for more variation in the population. I'll also isolate a few different banded individuals to see if I can further express that trait in their offspring Aside from color and slight size differences, they're acting completely normally. The intense inbreeding and low genetic diversity hasn't really had much of an effect on them. They still breed quickly, and pupate just as quickly as when I first got them.

It's like 4 bucks for a good jar, you can get all sorts on Amazon, just make sure it has a silicone gasket, that way its sealed well

It will definitely lead to inbreeding, as far as genetic deficiency, I'm actually not really sure if they are impacted very negatively by inbreeding.

fruit flies are used a lot in evolutionary research because they breed new generations very quickly. The problem all the experiments reach, however, is they dead end due to genetic deficiency. They can, however, get many generations out of the fruit flies before they hit that dead end, leading to some good science. I don't think there's a real risk with the flies in the jar, He's not trying to breed them to a certain trait. They'll likely last as long as the resources last.

I was working in a Drosophila lab for my PhD and - out of interest - started catching Fruit Flies in my backyard and brought them to the lab. I ended up with about 10 different species successfully maintained in the lab for more than 1.5 years (I left then, but they might still be maintained). The starter population sometimes consisted of only one pregnant female, so there was inbreeding from the beginning, but I could maintain most of the populations without larger difficulties

Drosophila funebris does not have black dots on the wings either. There are other species that have though, like Drosophila suzukii.

I remember we were doing hereditary traits in college, in biology. We were breeding fruit flies and in order to check them under a microscope we had to knock them out with ether, in order to inspect under a microscope. The container they were in had a little sponge and we used to SOAK it in ether and a lot of them would still wake up and fly away. My teacher was saying how 10 - 15 years prior, they would put 2-3 drops on the sponge and they had a hard time keeping them alive. In one decade our fruit flies adapted and evolved to be able to withstand a chemical meant to kill them, and are now able to pretty much handle it without issues. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Biology is amazing.

When I was breeding flies in college they come out pretty strange sometimes. Different patterns. Extra or lack of a wing. Extra big butt lol.

I think due to them being able to breed with each other, very soon all flies will have wings again in no time

@@LifeinJars So, your claim is that the gene causing the fruitflies to be flightless is recessive and the gene allowing them to have wings is dominant? I guess this statement does make sense as the flightless fruitflies do have the gene to allow them to have wings, they have just been breed to the point of that gene being recessive. The introduction of the fruitflies with wings would cause all off spring to have wings, no matter if they mated with wingless or with wing fruitflies, as both parties here have the gene that allows them to have wings and take flight.
