***** I think that's well put. But sadly, it's still not enough. The consumer (suspending the notion that some people find a consumption analogy offensive, because it may contribute to objectification) still must be *properly informed* and not just mindful. For my case, I would say that the lack of information on the sides--the polemical identities--is in the science that neutral language helps to achieve their goals better than venting and ranting towards an out-group in a public forum without being more even-handed. Specifically, neutral language in this context (i.e. "sexual egalitarianism") helps to mitigate reactance of out-groups; it is inclusive to more victims; it serves to better thwart off extremist fringes inherent in a polemical group anchored on reactions to out-group offenses (rather than the middle, where power-counterbalancing stops by definition); and is actually more semantically accurate in terms of ultimate goals (to be in the middle)--there's no equivocation of the etymology required. These are things that we all want--well, all of us who are actually for sexual equality and not retributivism or those who think one sex/gender is better than another.

I am a lesbian and a massage therapist. While I was working on my boss's husband I let slip in casual conversation my sexuality. I didn't know what I had done but at that moment his brain had changed me into something not human. I was a sex object to him. He began touching my hips and ass and telling me that "lesbian porn was his favorite to watch" and making kissing noises at me. Now normally I would have walked out a long while before that but because his wife was my employer he held my livelihood in his hands. He used that power over me. When I made a meeting with his wife the next day to discuss what had happened she acted like I was a crazy person. She blamed it on "cultural differences and dizziness on his part" (they're Indian) What I didn't know at the time is that this had happened to two other girls who went to court over it and LOST. This is why I am a feminist! This is why this poem is important!

Chase Anderson You're hysterical. There's every reason to be a feminist. Look around you at the way women are portrayed in literature, art, movies... just anything from thousands of years ago to today. Does that not say a damn thing to you? Tell me you find no hints of discrimination towards the female sex. It's all the same. We were viewed as having to be owned by men, and some of us still are.

@aa-qf1mw

Chase Anderson The Bible. How's that for an example? Also, I don't know if you're American, but I am. Read the parts of the Declaration of "Independence". We the People only referred to white men, not women or slaves. Have you ever seen the movie Grown Ups? I forgot the guy's name, but in the movie he has his three daughters visit. Two of them were your typical 'eye candy', tall and nice bodies with clean faces. The third daughter was short and chubby, she was meant to be the laughing stock, simply because of her appearance. Right here on YT you can find a short clip of when they arrive. And I'm not going to lie, there is discrimination against men who aren't so good looking, but more often than not you see women sexualized in ads. There's more of a pressure for women to be good looking and pleasing to eyes, because we're expected to have all these youthful qualities, so we're pressured into wearing make up, dressing to fit our body type, etc. Google the bechdel test. I'd explain it myself but it's too much info and I've already provided enough. And if you're just here to troll and tell me there is no sexism, that's a false claim.
@coolfloyd6113
@coolfloyd6113 9 жыл бұрын
alexandra r 1.The Bible and the declaration were written a long time ago and is not indicative of modern sexism. 2. Grown Ups is just shitty comedy, and men are also given the same treatment. 3.Women are sexualized in ads targeted towards men, that's how capitalism works. 4. Just because you're pressured to do something doesn't mean you have to do it, grow a spine. 5. How is it trolling?
@aa-qf1mw
@aa-qf1mw 9 жыл бұрын
Chase Anderson(i didn't expect it to be so long, but i had to explain some things lol) 1. You asked for examples. I gave some. You can't say they're irrelevant to our time. Many people live by the Bible. To some people, religion is the only reason they live. It's age doesn't mean a thing. The Declaration of Independence is extremely important to its nation. The example i gave about it was irrelevant to now, but it's an example of sexism in history. 2. It may be a shitty comedy, but I know plenty of real life people who I have to interact with daily who have that sort of gross mindset. Immature? Yeah, but it's fairly acceptable behavior. I've never seen men's worth based off of how they look according to women. Give examples? 3. How does that make it ok? It gives the idea that women, once again, are for people's pleasure and enforce the idea they have to be sexually appealing to be noticed. it's toxic to young girls. 4.Are you being serious? Gender roles are deeply rooted into culture. More than you think. I don't think you seem to have a clue how they work. It's different from peer pressuring or anything of that. Look at transgenders for example. Their assigned sex doesn't match what gender they identify with. A woman with "boy parts" will be called all kinds of names, simply because they don't 'match' up with what they're supposed to be like. Some people might tell transgender people to get over the hate and brush it off as no biggie. But, really, it is a huge problem, especially when you compare the depression and suicide rates in transgenders to the overall population. That is no overreaction or exaggeration. 41% of transgender youths attempt suicide, compared to 4.6% of the overall population. 5. I wasn't saying it was trolling.. It sounded like you could have been, so i was just saying. This is a very troll-able topic.

I don't know if it's overcompensation for Sexuality being supressed for so long, but nowadays, in all honesty, we have a bunch of Perverted Mindsets and just a bunch of Perverts overall. Sex Sells is a Religion, Gay Pride is shown by Kissing and Groping and Spanking Strangers (and often record and upload it) and so many more problems are there. Sex Scenes in Movies, for example, are considered so extremly 'generic' that they sometimes don't even make any freaking sense. Or something. People that I have to - sorry for the harsh words - outright call Whores and Bastards, have their own TV-Shows, and even more have KZfaq-Channels. Yeah, a lot of them have channels, which is just outright terrible...

Ms. Twohy is truly absolutely phenomenal: emotionally deep, brutally honest, and witty. Her talent both in composing verse and in delivering it is impossible to deny. She draws you in with humor and a few cute pop culture references so you're listening intently with a smile on your face when the cadence suddenly picks up and you're struck square in the face with something devastatingly real and emotionally powerful. She forces you to feel the gravity of things you may not normally be capable of relating to directly -- I'm a cis man and have no experience with psychosocial issues like crippling anxiety, but she conveys feeling and meaning so well that I get a palpable, if incomplete sense of what it's like to be a woman whose emotional damage due to being the victim of a sexual assault is amplified by recurring problems with anxiety. I'm far from being an experienced poetry critic, but by chance found a quiet reference to this video and I'm completely blown away. I've watched all the videos I can find thus far of Ms. Twohy performing and I'm hoping some of the other feminist poetry on what looks to be a great KZfaq channel is even half as good as this.

Fanfiction can come from all shows, fandoms, etc. She merely used Harry Potter as an example, but still I know what she's saying. I can't stand real porn, it makes me feel uncomfortable and disgusted with the human body. I should not feel like that when looking at sex. Fanfiction lets you go into a different world, and the way she described it was off the bat amazing and exactly how I feel when I read erotic fanfiction. Great job.

People like to pretend you're being sex-negative when you say you dislike the majority of visual porn, but this is exactly the reason why I don't watch it. Not because I am opposed to porn in and of itself, but because the majority of visual porn that is marketed towards men depict women as a collection of body parts you can use to your own liking. That is what I don't like. This type of porn that she talks about takes the human element out of sex and makes sex marketable, ready for consumption, instead of the visceral human experience it can be. As she says, "My sex is magic". I am not accepting anything less than magic.
@megansadorus2285
@megansadorus2285 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It's not porn as a concept itself that's the problem, it's the industry surrounding it that normalizes the dehumanization of women. It's not realistic and encourages male fantasies that revolve around dominating and abusing women.

I come back to this poem about once a year and I remember all over again how powerful it is, and "powerful" is not a word I normally use to describe... Well, anything but an athlete or a machine, really. Every line is a punch to the gut. She's got a remarkable command over the English language. Everyday words and phrases and cliches mean more when she puts them together and speaks them on a stage. Footnote, I shared this poem with a professor who does academic lectures on fanfiction at a Lord of the Rings event and publishes papers on the literary genre, and she shared it with her class. Brenna, if you ever look at these comments... Your work has reached academia.

Most sexual fanfics are caring and when one says stop they stop. They don't continue. It is gently and they are making love. Not fucking just for the thrill. It's diffrent. But I keep that I read these things a secret but others can go around saying they watch the most fucked up porn. It's socially not acceptable but watching a girl beg not to be touched or a child being told this is "normal" and "what grown ups do" is okay. It makes me sick.

@@SnitchSeeker Yeah, but quite often it's written with understanding of emotions behind it. Non-con fics don't skip over the fear, over despair, over emotional damage. I mean, sure, there probably are bad fics written by people who don't understand that you can just roleplay a scene if you have an unusual preference. But most of non-con fics I've read were rather focused on the horror of it. They were exploring trauma of characters who existed in the bigger picture too. I think that's different. And, in the end, they're also just characters. Not real life women being put through pain and fear on the camera.

I just recently discovered this side of KZfaq through this very video (thanks to the brilliant pun in the title no doubt) and howwly cow I'm going to stay forever. Everyone is so nice, even when people aren't being nice they still seem to be. The absence of irrelevant insults and unsupported "opinions" is truly cleansing c:

I agree explicit fanfic is better than mainstream porn in a lot of ways, and she sure has an epic rant on the subject. Not only is fanfic part of a larger world, beyond the smut, but even relatively thin individual stories have actual plot. I avoid the particularly rough or otherwise offensive mainstream stuff, but I wonder what goes under my radar, and no wonder a woman is downright offended by it.

The thing I love about Brenna's poetry is that she a) never shies away from anything and is always unapologetically herself and b) most of her poems start out as funny before she dives into the heartbreaking layers of her metaphors

I've been struggling with my sexuality for a long time, trying to find out If I fit the ace spectrum since I do get turned on by fanfiction or nsfw audiobooks but I am disgusted or simply not aroused by anything visual- be it magazines or porn. This video kinda helped me with that... Particularly the "because they're a part of a bigger story" bit. Maybe I just don't like visual things because there is not more to it than just sex. There is no story, no characters- only bodies. So it has no meaning to me. Thanks for making this poem and helping me a little with my confusion ❤️

There is something about porn that CAN be empowering if it's in the right setting. It's about women taking control of their own body and letting it be used in that way. I don't really know how to say it so I don't seem mysogynistic, because in all reality I am a feminist and I stand in the front lines for women's rights before anyone I personally know. However, those situations are few and far between and the harsh truth is that the porn industry in more abusive than it is empowering and respectful of women.

Most porn is misogynistic in nature, but there is a lot of sex positive porn that's all about protection and consent as part of the foreplay!

There ARE elements of porn that can be empowering, but it doesn't change the fact that the way we look at women in the context of porn is generally shameful. Considering the reaction to leaked nudes, for example. Taking naked pictures could be an empowering thing for a woman. Taking the control over who sees them AWAY from the woman who consented to the pictures, and exposing this empowering moment for the judgement and scrutiny of others? Abusive, exploitative, sexist. Who gets the blame? "Well, don't take nudes if you don't want them leaked." translation: "You have NO RIGHT to claim sexual power of your own. It isn't yours to enjoy. Your sexuality belongs to whoever can gain access to it, by any means necessary. Guard it with your life." Sex workers, strippers, porn stars, and regular women claiming their own sexuality in their regular relationships and ALLOWING themselves to be used sexually SHOULD be an empowering thing. The way we look at that SHOULD be a reflection of whatever the woman in question feels about herself. However, the way we look at women and sexuality has warped that into the sex industry that we have now.

***** Heads up: it's probably better in this context to use a phrase like 'erotic dancer' which isn't used as a slut to belittle people who do this job. Your friend might be absolutely fine with the term 'stripper' and that's cool, but there may be other people reading who feel belittled by people using that term.After all it is used sometimes int he same context as 'slut' to refer to a woman whose sexual choices you find frightening. I wholly agree with the message of your comment and don't mean to make you feel bad, I just also want to make this comment section a bit friendlier to women :)

I was binge watching these spoken word videos and came across this a few times, yet I didn't click on it not once. I then reached over with my left hand to pick and eyelash out of my eye and boom my hand brushed the screen of my cell phone. Next thing I know I'm watching something I've grown to love. Maybe it was coincidence.. or maybe not. Maybe it was fate.. or maybe not. But whatever it was I'm thankful that it happened

(I have a slam poem I want people to hear but am too scared to read to others, please read.) I am a young white girl from Oklahoma. I draw, I write, I wear make up, I date. I discover, I learn, I see, and I hear. I draw: I draw the pictures of where the man touched me when I am in therapy. I write: I write about things I am passionate about that everyone else despises. I wear make up: to hide my deformities my mother calls precious. I date: girls. And my family is ashamed. I discover:Hatred and wars on this earth for things that could've been peacefully settled. I learn: what the white lines of powder smell like. They smell like drugs. They are drugs. I see: girls like me selling sex for money they don't receive and instead a beating. I hear: racial slurs on my friends, catcalls on me, and the death rattle of an alcohol poisoned man. I am a girl: but I don't want to be at all. And my family AND peers are ashamed. I am white: but I am as privileged as the next, and I hate my skin. I am young: but I am not stupid, and I am not your object for pleasure. -thank you for reading.

This is really great! I especially like the line about drugs. My advice (if you are looking for any, if not I do like it the way it is) would be to add more concrete language. For example instead of "I wear make up: to hide my deformities my mother calls precious." You could use: I wear makeup to hide my/the (whatever deformity) connect-the-dot pages that my mother thinks are precious. Again this is just a suggestion! And the "connect-the-dot" thing is my freckles. If you have any questions just feel free to reply :)

mairhead campbell I think what she's trying to say is that it's like people stereotype white people now. Like we all flaunt our privilege, like we all take it for granted, like we're all racist and I get what she means about hating her skin colour, because apparently if you're white, the entire slavery-fucking-triangle is all your fault, just like all Germans are guilty of attempted genocide, even when Hitler was Austrian. And yes I am white, and yes, I have privilege, but I do not flaunt it, I do not take it for granted, I am not racist, I am not homophobic even though I'm straight and I don't hate men even though I'm a feminist. Yes, you may say I have my head stuck up my arse, that I'm blinded by my "privilege", sorry, should I just put black makeup on so you don't hate me? Oh wait, you'd hate me more. I'm sick to death of seeing online that if you say you're white its like "look at what you're kind do, you're so fucking privileged it's disgusting" news-fucking-flash: I didn't ask for privilege, no white person did, jut like no black person asked for slavery. I'm not under minding any of history, all I'm saying is, don't stereotype white people, that's what I'm trying to say. I don't stereotype your race, don't stereotype mine. I'm sorry my ancestors were fucking horrible, but I can't help that, I can't change the past, if i could, I would. I understand all the hate I'm about to get for this, but I really don't give a fuck. The reality is, yes, there are racist, homophobic, sexist white people out there, but there are also homophobic Asian people, or sexist black people. I couldn't give a flying fuck what your skin colour, religion, or nationality is, as long as your a decent person, cool, keep doing you. But not every white person is like this. That's all I'm saying.

I love how powerful and painful this is, how it makes the hair on my body stand on end, how I know each situation and I know how that feels. And I love how people will say that perverting a child's book into porn is wrong, but how a business with a body count is not.
