How to change the water filter in a Breville Barista Express espresso machine.
I use the Univem water filters I purchased on Amazon: 6 for $8.00
www.amazon.com/...
They seem to be identical in shape and construction to the ones from Breville, just 1/4 the cost. They do not have any fancy packaging, they just come in a padded envelope individually plastic bagged.
I change the filter about once every 2 months using my "fridge magnet" reminder system. I go by the "Clean Me" light that comes on about once every 2 weeks and then rotate the fridge magnet 90 degrees each time that happens. On the odd cleanings, I just use a cleaning tablet:
- • Breville BES870XL Bari...
On the even cleanings, I do the descaling then cleaning:
- • Breville BES870XL - Ba...
And you could remove the filter for the 1st descaling process and replace it when done if you wanted to. And on every 4th cleaning, I swap out the filter. I'll toss the new filter in some clean water prior to running the descaling procedure. Then I'll rinse out the water tank, install the new filter, fill the tank with filtered tap water and then run the cleaning cycle. This way I run some water through the filter to flush it out as well. And after cleaning, I'll run a shot or two of water through to clean out the cleaning solution.
You can also go by the dial indicator on the filter housing, setting that dial to the month you want to change the filter on. I find that I don't have the tank out of the machine that often to look at that indicator. But if that dial works for you, by all means, use that. I do reset mine when I change the filter, just in case.
Some interesting information on what's inside the water filter:
• Breville 870XL Filter ...
Hope this helps clarify the water filter changing process. Any questions, use the comments section below. As always, thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. Breville has NO indication anywhere in its literature how to OPEN the water tank. Your video was the only one to show how the overly-conplicated lid mechanism works. Am I the only one who has trouble with this ?

Glad to help. Yes, that tank lid seems to be overly complicated. I only remove the tank when I do the descaling procedure in order to rinse it out. Otherwise, I just leave it in place and refill water out of a separate container.

Not too much trouble here, but that's true: no guidance from Breville on that point [water tank lid open/close] and no graphic image of what the water tank and filter look like assembled. Thanks R. Brown!

Do you have to run a whole tank of water first after you insert the nre filter or is it ok to use right away?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 5 жыл бұрын
In the Breville user manual, you just soak it in water and use it straight away. In my normal maint. cycle, I change the filter every other descaling cycle. I usually soak the filter in some water while I'm running the descaling cycle on the machine. Then when I'm running the clear water through after descaling, I'll put the new filter in.

I use filtered water with a ''Brita'' filter system... should I still use a filter in the water tank?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 2 жыл бұрын
There are 2 types of filters, one charcoal based for removing bad taste, the other if ion exchange resin for removing hardness. The Brita will probably do the first, but not sure if it does the 2nd function. Likely wise to run some sort of filter just to filter out debris that might accidentally get into the tank and then clog the hard to replace in-line filter before the pump.

we have a frabill espresso maker step down from yours and when it says to replace the water filter it says wash the stainless steel mesh in the plastic filter compartment we don't seem to be able to find one except for one that is attached at the bottom of the water tank is that what we're supposed to take out and clean?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose it must be that mesh screen in the bottom of the filter folder. I've never seen anything in mine so never bothered trying to clean it. Probably just rinse it out with a reverse water flow and maybe an old toothbrush to dislodge anything stuck in the screen.

thanks RB. I just received some charcoal filters from eBay (China probably). I fill the tank with filtered water from the tap so not sure how necessary these coffe machines filters are. Anyway, soaked the new filters in a mug of water as per the instuctions and the water turned black after 5mins. So i rinsed it a few times and left it to soak overnight to be safe! I too torn into the original (old) filter to find that tiny ball resin stuff! have u any experieince of using charcoal filters? I'm just hoping my espresso doesnt taste like charcoal tmrw morning!
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
I've looked at one of the charcoal type filters in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLKhnLZ6tqumdWw.html I did use that batch, they didn't produce any excessive black sediment. The charcoal variety are better for removing odors and tastes from the water while the resin type are more for removing hardness.

@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 9 жыл бұрын
Susazeu My Krups coffee+espresso machine lasted around 5 years, not sure what finally did it in. Sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Also mine had a leak someplace in the espresso water reservoir, again sometimes it leaked, other times not. So I usually only put water in to make espresso then drained the reservoir after I was done. I think it's a natural progression to move up from lower end to higher end machines over time, doubling the price of the machine each time. The Barista Express is still going strong, had it about 15 months now.

@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 2 жыл бұрын
Mine is an older machine, perhaps Breville has changed the design of the filter holder lately. Mine has two plastic clips on the bottom of the holder and those snap into slots on the upper portion. If the filter is not fit in properly, it may not click into place. So I'll pull it apart and make sure the filter fits up inside the holder before pushing the bottom in place.

hi do i have to replace this filter if im already using purified water?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of filter and why it's being used. There are ion exchange filters (soften hard water) and activated carbon filters (remove bad taste). If you're using filtered, relatively soft water, then you can probably keep using the same filter for a long time. If the filtered/purified water is hard, then use the ion exchange filter to soften the filtered water and change it out periodically. For example I use filtered tap water in my machine so I run the ion exchange filter and change that out every 2 months and descale the machine every month. Probably a good idea to use some sort of filter just to keep junk out of the machine, like if you accidentally get some grounds in the water tank or whatever.

So I use filtered water, do I still need a filter for the tank?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
I guess that's up to you. I run tap water through a charcoal filter in my machine. In there, I have the ion exchange resin filter to help reduce the hardness of the tap water. If your water is filtered and soft enough, then no added benefit of either type of filter. I think I would still have a filter in place just to filter out any debris that might accidentally fall into the water tank. But no need to change it every few months as recommended.

Yes, it does seem to be over designed, especially the elaborate top handle, although it is nicely balanced once open. I do like how nicely it goes into position without needing to see what you are doing behind the machine. I mostly leave it in place and just pop the top open to add water. I only remove it about once a month when I descale the machine.

Hi I have this Breville and i don't know if i have to leave some water in the tank each night ? With no water the filter will be dry in the next morning is it ok ? What do you do?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
I almost always have water in the tank on my machine, unless it happens to run almost "dry" on the last use of the day. I doubt the filter would dry out over night with the tank lid closed. There's always a bit of water in the bottom of the tank that's can't exit into the machine, plus the filter holds several times it weight in water. You would have to evaporate all that before the filter would be "dry".

Yes, I still have it and use it several times per day (purchased 2012 as I recall). No real issues with it, although there does seem to be some variation in the volume setting. I have my double cup volume changed from the default. Most of the time, I get the set amount, other times I get the lower default amount and rarely, it'll keep going until my cup overflows. Other that that minor issue, still works fine. I follow the recommended cleaning and descaling procedures.

My water reservoir leaks From the bottom at the connection. . Any thought on repair?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 8 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that problem on my Breville but did on my old Krups machine. With that one, I found it was the seating of the water tank into the mating connection that often leaked. I cleaned and lubed up the connections and seals and then seated the tank carefully into the machine. I would then check for leaks and if found, I would separate the tank and re-seat it until no leaks were observed. Then to minimize future leaks, I would leave the tank in place long as possible and refill it with a separate water container. I still do that same on the Breville, leaving the tank in place and filling it from a separate water container, just to save wear and tear on the tank connection.
