Also known as Breville BES878 or Sage Barista Pro.
When the Breville Barista Pro came out we thought it was an exact replica of the Breville Barista EXPRESS model which looks virtually identical: Grinder built in, Single boiler etc.
However, having got my hands on one and used it for a bit I can say that they are extremely different in many ways so don't let its looks fool you.
This is a very tidy machine and while it might not suit people who want to level up their coffee game, it meets all the requirements of anyone who is dipping their feet into the coffee pool for the first time.
We are releasing a 101 coffee Barista course specifically for this machine in the next couple of weeks so if you're thinking of purchasing the Breville BES878 then hold on to your hats!

I am super passionate about coffee and educating people on all aspects of this amazing drink. I love bringing the stories back from the other side of the world about how they grow and process the coffee differently in each farm, in each region, in each country. I also love helping baristas around the world make better coffee for themselves, whether they're at home, professional, competitors and or even just venturing out into the wide world of coffee.
About Ryd!

I recently picked one of these up, My budget wasn't limited, but my kitchen counter space was, as it is replacing a compact nespresso machine. I think it is to easy to forget that espresso machines need about the same space as a microwave oven plus some extra space for a grinder and tamping etc, and let's not forget all the other things taking up counter space like kettles toasters food processors mixers etc

Actually, you make a great point! 👌🙌 I hadn't considered people not having the bench space. I was relogated to the laundry for years because I had a commercial 2group plumbed in. Now that I downsized the machine I was allow to use the kitchen bench, but definitely a major plus for the Breville Pro is the footprint. Thanks for pointing that out!

3 to 5 year life expectancy! Our Siemens is 17 years old and has made around 17,000 brews. Our Miele is playing up after only 6 years. They both make pretty good coffee quickly, which is what we need in the morning. I'm not sure I'm prepared to splash out on a fancy machine that needs a fair bit of faffing to get a coffee, especially as we'll need to replace it pretty soon.
@Rydecoffeecoach

Yes, I wouldn't recommend this machine for an upgrade to what you currently have. 17 years is amazing and I bet you'll become the face of @siemens once they hear this news! If you don't enjoy preparing the coffee first then I would recommend sticking to the super automatic machines like Siemens or Jura, even De'Longhi. But you are limiting yourself to experiencing how amazing coffee can taste. Think of it like a microwave meal as opposed to cooking your own gourmet dinner. I love the ritual of making coffee in the morning, it's my mindfulness and therapy all rolled into one, so for me, spending 15 minutes making two coffees is bliss.

Who really needs to steam milk and make coffee at the same time. I make lite roast espresso perfect in mine. Works great. And at $800. That’s super expensive for me. Hey ryd! quick question: i have the breville express at home for family and friends and like you im quite dissapointed with it only after a couple of months. its ok, but not what i thought. just not powerfull enough and the steamer is tiny and weak. im looking at some sort of upgrade and im not sure where to go with this. im thinking maybe a small machine with a 58mm portf and a grinder. brands like Gagia or Rancilio would be good? can you point me in the right direction.
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Happy to help out. 👌 Yep the Barista express is really a let down and I don't know why Breville still sell it since they now offer the Barista Pro. I love the Rancilio Silvia but I wouldn't buy it without the PID or dual boiler if I was beginning. The Gaggia classic Pro is much better to start on and it will last you ages.

It does go up to 97 degrees or so but maybe the probe is in the boiler and not the group head so the water cools down by the time it gets there. I still prefer the Breville dual boiler.

My Breville Express which I bought second hand took a dump on me. So my wife bought me a used Brim and man was that a mistake. It’s a poor man’s Breville. The shot quality isn’t even on par with the Breville Express. So the cool part is Breville sent me a percentage off any one of the Breville coffee lineups. I’m considering the Pro or the Dual Boiler. I know it sounds like the Dual boiler is the way to go. But I do already have the accessories that fit the Pro model. I’m leaning toward both and torn. I think selling my 1st born is easier than picking an expresso machine. 😂
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! You've got a tough decision to make! How much do all you accessories cost? If it's not too much you could sell them and maybe make a bit back to put towards the dual boiler. I would opt for the Dual Boiler because it's a standard 58mm group head. This means you'll always have loads of accessories that fit it, the Express/pro you'll always have to wait until they make a 54mm version of the latest accessory.

@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach 2 жыл бұрын
No I don't think so, you really need something more powerful. Usually you can find a second-hand commercial machine with two groups for a similar price. This machine would be only good if you were doing 20 coffees in an entire day which is not enough to run a business on.

Can you elaborate a bit about your statement that the machines wil last 3-5 years? Doesn't sound very long for a coffee machine. Have seen cheaper machines that kept going for 10+ years no problem. Also can you recommend a better machine (with grinder) that has better longevity?

Are there other machines around this price range that will last longer than 3-5yrs? I bought the barista pro about 4 months ago and o had to send it back for a check up I feel like it doesn't brew coffee hot enough. When it's brewing it's hot but once you add sugar it's lukewarm. I'm not a happy camper right now and after hearing you say this machines don't last long. Makes me want to return it and get my money back honestly.
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach Жыл бұрын
Yeh it's definitely not a long term machine. 😥 The machines I recommend that sit at this price point are: Rancilio Silvia and Gaggia classic pro. You'll need to buy a separate grinder but in the long run it's worth it. You'll also need to go on a steep learning curve to get the best extractions out of it because they are not exactly beginner friendly. Another brand to check out which has a huge range is Lelit. You'll find excellent machines at various prices with different features. All these machines aren't the sexiest ones but they will last you 15+ years and are inexpensive and make great quality coffee. Let me know if you need more assistance! 👌👌

I bought this a year ago after to moving to Portugal. About four months ago, I noticed the temperature of my shots was tepid. After pulling a shot, I had to put it in the microwave for 25 seconds. Then, the steam wand started to fail. Can barely make a flat white. Now, the pump must have gone south as I cannot even pull a shot. I don't know how or where in The Algarve to get this fixed. I would NOT recommend this machine!
@Rydecoffeecoach
@Rydecoffeecoach Жыл бұрын
I can't help you in Portugal but in Australia every device comes with a minimum 2 year warranty and extended 4 years. That sounds like a faulty machine and should be replaced under warranty (if you have one from where you bought it.) Granted, it's not the greatest machine and I prefer the dual boiler if you have a budget under $2k. This is a good example of the issues with appliance machines. Thanks for sharing!
@glennover6046
@glennover6046 Жыл бұрын
@@Rydecoffeecoach I submitted a warranty claim yesterday. Let's see what happens. And...this is supposed to be a machine as opposed to an appliance which is one of the reasons I spent the extra money. If for some ungodly reason, I can't get the issue resolved, I'm thinking about investing in something like a Profitec Go.

That sounds like a specific issue. You might have accidentally set the timer for the shot button to be 5secs. If it's not that, you might need to call in a warranty from the manufacturer because it certainly doesn't do that all the time.

It did the same when I first backed flushed it, I got a fellow to fix it and a few monthes later the fault showed up again after back flushing. Lelit Anita is almost double the price of the Breville Barista Pro here in Australia so it's not even close. Lelit is a great brand but I'm just comparing this machine to the old Barista Express which is horrible. Also, Gaggia classic doesn't have a grinder so although it's similar in price, people will buy that and forget about the grinder (not that I endorse a built in grinder either 😀). But the Gaggia is probably not for a beginner, you need to know temp surfing and helps if you've been a skilled Barista. Appreciate the feedback though. 👌
