Chris takes a look at the recurring dialog and plot elements you're likely to find in a comic book written by Brian Michael Bendis and drinks various hard ciders each time he identifies a trope.

I think the Bendis trope that annoys me most of all is the fact that none of the characters can keep their damn masks on. I can guess a Spidey comic is written by him just by seeing if he's got a mask on during a fight. His Moon Knight run did the same thing too, having Marc Spector constantly pulling back his hood and mask even in plane view of supervillains.

GodzillaMendoza That's an interesting observation. That hadn't occurred to me but I'm thinking of his comics and it appears to be true. I wonder if it's symptomatic of how he tries to ground things. Same reason he attempts various dialog patter techniques?
@GodzillaMendoza
@GodzillaMendoza 7 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, he probably thinks it makes the characters more human and vulnerable. Its easier to identify with and fear for a character's failures and successes if they have a recognizable human face to emote with. I get what he's going for with it, but I think he takes it too far and makes it a logistical problem in the story. Every person on the planet should know Peter Parker is Spider-Man considering how often Bendis has him drop the disguise in battle, willingly or otherwise. After a while it starts to feel like a cheap and artificial way to inject drama or tension.

Agreed. I like when creators really embrace what makes comic books a unique medium. You can have someone in a mask and show their inner thoughts. Or have the mask go invisible to show an emotion (Spidey's half mask). Ah well.

He doesn't even respect his own continuity! At the end of "Avengers Dissasembled" he has Carol Danvers say she will never forgive the presumed dead Wanda(Scarlet Witch) when she went crazy and destroyed the team. Years later when Wanda comes back suddenly she's suddenly her friend again and calling her husband Vision a jerk for not forgiving her!

Also: Learn the character; Know each continuity so you're doing it right; Caring about the integrity of the property; giving a damn about the people who buy the books and therefore make sure he is paid; some problems with portraying women; destroying characters because he can (Lois, Jon Kent); incest; cannibalism . . . I could go on but it makes me sad. But another great installment of Comic Tropes. Glad his 2016 video was coughed up by KZfaq.

I think Bendis works best with his own creations and those he may genuinely like. I already kinda hate him for Avengers Dissembled/House of M. There are characters he just don't bother to do research about and use them as objects and devices. And the way he used Scarlet Witch is a crime, and the recent Civil War II is another giant middle finger to Carol fans. He just never seems to care, there is no respect nor love. Just don't let him write team books or events, it's like waiting for a heart attack.

skunkape I like JJ, but even in Alias there are some out of character moments for other characters. Also Avengers put JJ in hospital, and it's not a surprise that Avengers all become more like jerks after he took over. Also the character assassination of Scarlet Witch is unforgivable, it's worse than Hydra Cap, at least Nick Spencer explained why all this happened and have a decent build-up. Bendis just makes Wanda go bat shit crazy out of nowhere. (She remembered and moved on in West Coast Avengers, Busiek made her a leader, a veteran.)Then Bendis came and shit broke loose. Also that What if?JJ joined Avengers felt like a further insult. He made JJ the one who saved it all, JJ prevents Wanda going crazy, yeah sure. Since it's JJ's "daddy" that ruined her. Cap suddenly having interest in JJ and marrying her is all another level of Mary Sue. Carol in his Avengers book is fine, and last year we got Civil War II. Good lord. I don't know, man. I don't trust him with certain characters. Sometimes it felt not like bad writing, but intentional sabotage. So the best solution is give him a little coner, let him do what he likes and ban him from using characters he never respect and know.

I find most of Bendis' work to be unreadably bad. I liked his original Ultimate Spider-Man run with Mark Bagley, but that's about it. I think his style of writing has generally damaged the comic's industry with too many other writers mimicking his extreme decompression, inane dialogue, and disregard of traditional comic book storytelling tools. Tasty looking ale, though. :)

Thank you, Sam. ComicsGate has raised some valid criticisms of the comic book industry, but I feel their criticisms are too narrowly focused. I agree with you that Bendis is a poison to the industry and his power in the industry has meant it's big dose of it. I believe if ComicsGate was discussing this and other things that have gone wrong in the industry as well as their focus on the SJWs, the movement would be taken more seriously

First, I just want to say that I love the show and your comics knowledge... no faults there at all, great job. However, as a former cider drinker (former as I no longer drink), there is one thing I really do have to bring up... CIDER is made with APPLES (or other fruit, depending on how strict you want to get about the definition), while BEER is made with HOPS. The difference is like vodka and whiskey, in that they're made using a totally different method out of different ingredients, and about the only thing they have in common is that they contain alcohol and come in similar-sized bottles. Sorry, but it's kind of a big distinction for me, as I've always hated beer (especially that fizzy-pop called "lager") but used to drink cider on the regular! lol

never understood why people are so critical of Bendis' dialogue. ive always been a big fan of the back and forth between characters he writes. then again, Ultimate Spider-Man is the book that got me into comics, so I may be blinded by nostalgia. great video though, a lot of these never occurred to me before, and since I've been rereading the original run of Ultimate Spider-man I can't stop noticing them, so thanks for that haha
@ComicTropes
@ComicTropes 7 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, just because a writer has a habit or tendency to do certain things does not automatically make them "bad." I just think it's worth noting their stylistic and structural techniques. I think overall his dialog is pretty good but if you read a lot of it, it feels less realistic. I also think his dialog worked a lot better in his crime procedural stuff like Goldfish, Jinx, Daredevil and Powers than, say, Ultimate Spider-Man or Avengers. But that's purely my opinion.

The biggest trope of Bendis I can see these days is: write a bunch of unimportant nonsense (baffle with bullshit) until the last page or two and only then reveal plot points (or use deus ex machina to resolve the story). Just about every issue of his Superman stuff is this way.

Buffy-speak is a writing style that may not suit everyone's ears but it is intelligent writing. There's lots of clever wordplay and meaning, and every line has a purpose. Bends-speak tries to mimick that style but his dialogue lacks substance because of his lack of technical skill. His writing is more comparable to El James (50 shades) than Whedon imo.

Biggest Trope for me is a character saying 'Oh my God'. Once i noticed it i couldn't stop noticing it. Bendis's characters do this far too often. Also the extreme pushing of retcons. Things like the Xorn explanations or trying to push Jessica Jones into Peter Parkers past, the the point where, mid-issue of New Avengers, he literally shows frames from a 1960's comic of Spider-Man and highlights a random student in it to say 'that is Jessica Jones right there'. It's just an insane level of detail that seems to be pushing a very confusing agenda.

Hey Chris, I'm working my way through your Tropes videos and you reminded me of a question. What do you consider to be the definition of a graphic novel? I've heard people refer to trade paper backs as graphic novels and I've also heard this is not the true definition. Thanks.
@ComicTropes
@ComicTropes 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. There is definitely not a consensus. But I think it's important to note that it's really more of a marketing term - an idea to relabel comics to appeal to a wider audience. I have heard a lot of agreement that the first graphic novel is Will Eisner's "Contract with God" which is a complete story. So my personal definition tends to mean a complete story. However, some stories are simply too large to tell in one book, because of physical limitations in the binding process. I don't think that just because a story was initially published in periodicals (chapters) that a trade paperback is NOT a graphic novel. I would argue it absolutely fits the bill. Which also means there isn't that much of a difference between saying comic book or graphic novel. I tend to call everything comics.
