Feim a few weeks ago, here’s me subbing on my previous gig, Elton Live (a traveling EH tribute band)
For this Elton John classic “Honky Cat”, I definitely deviated from the usual #NigelOlsson playbook but I had some VERY good reasons for it. (The lesson here is to listen to everything going on around you.)
…
Once Scott Patton came to the guitar spot in that band last year, he brought a very inspiring & unique approach to songs like this.
…
To me, Scott’s slide playing on this interpretation of Honky Cat sounds more like Lowell George (from Little Feat) than Davey Johnstone. So, that inspired me to slide more towards a Richie Hayward thing with my drumming on this tune, syncopated & slinky but with a locomotive drive.
…
(I know it’s hard to hear on this @GoPro audio but listen to that guitar solo!!)
🔥🔥🔥
You can’t hear it much on this camera audio but percussionist Luis is filling in the middle of the sonic spectrum with an incredibly groovy conga part!!
…
And on this gig, bassist Tim Smith played some super slick bass licks made me giggle!! That dude is a total bass guitar Jedi!
